I don't use discord as I don't do group content (due to 750+ ms satellite connection ping). I don't need it for anything at all.

When I'm talking to a guild recruiter about joining one of the things I always tell them is I rarely use Discord and can almost never use voice chat, even just to listen. If that's a problem for them or they admit their guild operates almost exclusively through Discord I'll find another guild to join instead. Occasionally I've joined one which said it wasn't a problem then found guild chat is almost never used, so then I'll leave and find another one.

I'm currently in 3 guilds, 2 of them I've been in for a few years, all use in-game chat. Sometimes it actually gets to be a bit much. I've set up seperate chat channels for each guild (as well as having them all in my main channel) so when there's multiple conversations going on at once I can focus on the one I want to see. But mostly it's nice to have the chatter going on while I'm playing and to have people I can ask question to as and when they come up.

I don't do vet instances so I don't know how that works and it doesn't really matter for me.

Thing is we do have Discord so we can't know what the game would be like if Discord and other chats didn't exist. Discord makes communicating easier. Doesn't mean all the things you mentioned wouldn't exist without voice chat. If it were never used then groups would rely on group chat and there would be more demand for voice chat in game.
Taking Discord and other voice chats away after being a part of the game would cause all kinds of uproar. Good thing that isn't likely to happen.

It's not Discord itself. It's that players need to communicate for harder content and community building in guilds, and talking is the easiest way to do that.

I use it only for social media, and rarely while I am playing the game. I've never been asked to use it for any content, either.

Silent trials exist but trials largely use discord because of requiring in-the-moment communication and leadership. Dungeons rarely ever, if ever actually need discord, though. Just to find the group if you don’t know anyone. Could make a group with some effort using other methods though (the forums, zone chat, other social media).

I don't do end game so that's not anything I need discord for. I do use it however for guild news etc..

I have one friend that always wants to voice chat but I find it disruptive when I'm trying to do things in game. I use push to talk and stopping to press a button stops me from what I'm doing. I don't feel comfortable leaving my sound on all the time because it feels invasive so that is not an acceptable option for me. I much prefer to just type my replies when I'm ready to.

So the short answer is no, I don't need Discord to play ESO.

While discord and guilds are ideal to run and plan content I do see veteran trial PUGs forming on "Cragslist" zone chat ever day. I also see veteran dungeons forming in Craglorn too although not as frequently as trials since we have a veteran dungeon finder which I use frequently. That being said you have a higher chance of content completion if you're running with your guild than PUGing.

I don't see Trifectas normally being a PUGable thing since it usually require practice and coordination from a group working together for a period of time in some sort of dugeon prog. It's possible since I did get the Cauldron's trifecta in a Random Veteran run, but everyone in that run was very competent with their role and knew the content so it's not an every day occurrence.

I see guild chat busy nightly with people doing events in one of my guilds even if it's far less busy than pre-U35 overall; maybe you just haven't found the right guild for the activities that you wish to participate in?

Discord is important to my guilds as we plan events and trials in discord, but it is possible to not use it. ESO badly needs additional in game guild tools IMO. I think guilds more than discord is the main gateway to harder content because discord is a facilitating tool for guilds and rarely a full on replacement for guilds. Is there a reason you don't like or can't use discord?

ESO is my super casual/solo game, WoW is my raiding game. Unfortunately I'm on Alliance and only recently took down Heroic Broodmother. At least there is built in voice chat in WoW, it's not great but its not horrible either, I've had worse.

ZOS couldn't take Discord away even if they wanted to because it's not part of the game, there's no Discord integration, just players choosing to use it at the same time.

Before Discord came along it was TeamSpeak, Ventrilo, Mumble, Skype etc. and if most people stopped using Discord for some reason they'd move on to some other program. When I first started playing MMOs some people would actually exchange phone numbers and set up a conference call while playing, but that was very niche because it was expensive, not only did you have to pay for the (almost certainly long-distance) call but you had to have a seperate phone line for your internet. (Alternatively if you were close enough you could set up a LAN party.)

People who want voice chat will always find a way to do it, it's just the methods which vary.

But that has never meant everyone has to use it, just that it's something which needs to be considered when joining or forming a group. Everyone needs to say what their preference is and find people willing to do the same.

It depends on what you do in the game: if you do any sort of challenging group content that needs coordination, then yes, voice communication is a must. Outside of this though, you don't really need it for anything else, so I wouldn't call discord an absolute necessity.

For me personally, without some type of voice chat, I wouldn't play. Since most of what I do revolves around groups doing content where communication is vital, I see it as more of a necessity to do that content.

Vet dungeons, unless youre after specific achievements or hard modes, voice isnt necessary. I run random vets regularly and dont always bother with it. Fights like Lair of Marselok HM on the other hand, have mechanics that I cant really see being done with some way to communicate quickly and efficiently. It seems like its balanced reasonably well.

Vet trials, I see, and participate in a few, where voice isnt always used. Older trials without "twins" mechanics are a bit easier to PUG without voice. I dont think its necessary for vSS for example, at all. Id still want it for vMoL though.

Most trifectas in trials and dungeons, with some exceptions in dungeons, are meant to be tough. They're meant to be tackled by groups that are coordinated and communicate well when necessary. I dont really see an issue with it.

Thing is, discord makes communication so much easier, as well as making the experience more... enjoyable, usually.

I used to have Discord when I did trials, I then stopped playing ESO for a long time, but I don´t have Discord atm since I broke my microphone headphones and can´t afford a proper replacement at this time.

I did recently join a guild that does veteran trials though, I told the guild leader I didn´t have any voice chat, and he said it was fine, but I should get it just to listen in during trials.

    And it´s not every guild.

I use Discord to keep up to date with what's going on with the guild, but the problem is that there are often way too many channels. It would be easier to keep up to date if they didn't feel the need to make a separate channel for everything. Having to look through multiple channels is sensory overload.

Discord is such a great QoL tool, I see no reason not to use it. I use discord in my relationship, I manage a Minecraft server, and have one for my board game group. When well run, it allows for really easy communication on focused topics. For ESO, it shores up some of the shortcomings on how dynamic in-game information is conveyed. Could I live without it? Sure, but would ultimately get my needs met elsewhere.

I mostly rely on Discord for seeing things like the current endeavors, pledges, luxury furnishings, and golden vendor items. Aside from endeavors, there's no one in-game place that reports that all to me. So in interest of time, I check Discord. I also use it at times for coordinating group activities, especially trials, or getting build feedback. I keep notifications to a minimum to avoid distractions.

I never use voice chat, in any game. Never have and good chance I never will.

I grew up typing to communicate in games and won't be changing that habit.
