What are the original sources of nirnhoned items?

The page https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Learn_the_Nirnhoned_Trait says 1 nirnhoned item will drop from one of the Upper Craglorn main quests. Is there any other original source? I don't mean guild traders, because they're secondary sources.

So how did crafters originally research all the nirnhoned traits for the different item types? Did they do that quest on multiple characters, or something? I'm still confused about how all these traits actually got researched in the first place, before these nirnhoned items were available in guild stores.

The original sources are lots of players completing the craglorn questline and getting different random nirn traits. Once researched each player would trade their item-trait with other players until, eventually, all item-traits were known. A few more dedicated players did complete the craglorn quest on multiple characters but it was the original character per account that were main generators or traders of the various nirn item traits.

These days it's just factory crafters and guild traders. Some craglorn quest completes, true, and maelstrom arena drops.

Drops from weekly trial leaderboard rewards can also be in nirnhoned.

Thanks for the responses, people, very interesting. Those earlier players must have had a tough time learning the nirnhoned trait on all the different items.

yeah i remember those days lol, nirnhoned research items would sell for 10s of thousands of gold (usually in the 40-60k range if i remember right) because the supply of nirncrux to do the crafting was also very low at the time

(and this was "pre-transmute" era too, so you couldnt even burn transmutes to make nirncrux, you had to go farm it, with an even worse drop rate than it was today)

(the drop rate originally was roughly 1 in 400, but they permanently changed it to roughly 1 in 200)

when i was trying to learn all the nirn research, i would trade research items with other players who knew nirn traits i did not, not to mention the whole process was slow, since it was new and those were 9th traits, it was 30 days per research anyway, so it took a long time to finish that process

I actually learned nirnhoned on an either an alt or my alt account first... so that I could pump out nirnhoned items when they were that expensive and only have the 6h research timer.

i saw a lot of people doing that lol, but i wanted to learn it on my main since that was the only toon i wanted to dedicate to crafting lol

I thought Nirnhoned weapons could also drop from trials and arenas? The UESPWiki doesn't mention armor, though.

It's only the newer trials that do so.

Wasn't actually tough simply because everyone who completed the quest had a random nirn researched and we would just trade our researched piece with theirs, no money involved.
I do remember people trying to sell nirn pieces for expensive prices and I guess some paid, but any crafters, we just traded them between each other.

Also, craglorn was a group zone. So people did the quest with 4 people.

So you hope everyone in your group had a different piece from it, so you call all research and then make your piece for the others.

I managed to stock up on nirncrux over the 4 day explorer's celebration, taking advantage of the increased drop rates. At the start of that I had the not-so-grand total of 2 fortified and 0 potent nirncrux, and when it finished I had 25 and 15. Now I just visit Craglorn every chance I get, e.g. there were some harvesting and kill humanoid related endeavours recently, so I did both in Craglorn, and tried to harvest some nirncrux while there.

Don’t forget it also only dropped in Upper Craglorn originally, it wasn’t even available in the whole zone.
