“First Person Only” Battlegrounds Weekend?

I’m going to preface this by saying… I love First Person.

One of the my favorite features about TES that stood out, solidifying it against its competition, was that this franchise was one of the only medieval fantasy RPGs that could be played in First Person. The Elder Scrolls Online continued this tradition, allowing for full First Person support, something I appreciate.

My one problem with First Person in this game compared to prior ones, is that it puts you at a severe disadvantage against players that are playing in Third. Immediately in either PvE or PvP you begin to notice it when you’re up against any ground-based effects, as it limits your situation awareness while providing no advantage whatsoever.

What I propose, would be for one weekend only, that for our Battleground Weekend event we could have a First Person Only restriction.

Other than being massively entertaining, this would help to shed a light on the differences in playstyle between someone in First and Third Person, while if widely received as a positive, could open up the possibility of other future events having a similar lock in place.

I’m creating this poll with the intent on gathering how much interest players would have in this idea and keeping it anonymous, if you feel strongly one way or another, be sure to comment down below, I’d love to hear why!

I like first person view, but I don't want only first person battlegrounds even for a day. It will be a mess

First person view for me is generally too flashy in PvE and in PvP it's generally worse.

One of the things that I believe needs attention, I agree.

I get motion sickness within seconds if I play in 1st person view. So it's a no go for me (can play first person - without being sick - only in click & go games).

Beside, I do love to see my char and at the top of it, I have a much better sense of localization (me vs. others vs. action vs. landscape) in 3rd person.

I agree. I do PvP in another game first person, but it is the only view and would choose the third person if I had a choice. However, as the limited votes in the poll indicate there is not a lot of interest in first-person PvP in ESO. It would be easy to ignore such an event leaving it a disaster of long queue times.

I would definitely participate just for the memes, would be a hilarious mess and who cares if it's only for a weekend? They could make it a separate que and have its own leaderboard that ended after the weekend was over.

Would have been a fun little thing to do.

The first-person view restricts the view. Then you need the enemy radar to understand what is happening behind your back, otherwise you will often die without even knowing what happened.

Right, part of the problem with playing against people in third person, while in first.

Players are often surprised when I tell them I use inverted mouse for games with a camera.

The unfortunate side effect is I get simulator sickness in some first person titles. Any type of corridor shooter and I have to lay down after 15 minutes. I've tried switching to normal Y-axis but it feels so unnatural. I always go back to inverted.

I would try first person battlegrounds but probably end up skipping it.

I don't do battlegrounds very often anyway, so it wouldn't make a big difference but I definitely wouldn't want to play them in 1st person. I use it occasionally, but always out of combat.

In Morrowind and Oblivion I kept switching, but in Skyrim I was always in 1st person for combat because I found the over the shoulder view annoying and my character got in the way (console version had no option to change it, not sure about PC). So I'm not attached to any of them and will use whatever I find most practical, but in ESO that's definitely 3rd person.

One time painintheaxx, airiesummer, one of their friends, and I, all did a first person bg for memes (as pain and airie were both streaming it).
It was as painful as you can imagine, but we were laughing the whole time.
I wouldn't want to do a weekend of that. That would be awful, in my opinion.

Mind sharing what was painful about it? In my experience, it was hard to track players, I was constantly getting flanked, and I had no idea where the AoEs were.

Pretty much all these. Then you have no map as well, so good luck figuring out wtf is going on unless you can physically see people. And we were on the orsinium map with the weather effects so we couldn't even see past that lmao

    not possible

and even if it were possible to lock the camera and people decided to circumvent it, i don't think they should be punished for playing over the shoulder

For this to work it would have to be a lock, as in it would need to force you into first person, kind of like what it does when you back up too close to an object, and keep you there until the end of the match.

Nobody is talking about punishing anyone for their style of play, relax. Having a First Person BG weekend would help shed a light on the problems with playing in 1st compared to 3rd, opening up avenues of discussion in regards to making the perspective at the very least not a detriment, because where it stands, you hurt yourself for immersion, and the vast majority of players do not make that sacrifice, and who could blame them?

And people with ultra wide monitors already see farther to the left and right as it is. In first person that would be an even greater advantage they would have over others with normal dimension monitors.

First person is badly implemented in this game. I don't like first person to begin with, but this games first person mode is pretty awful. That, and motion sickness would keep me from ever wanting this in any event.

Single-player TES games are meant to play in first person; third-person view is rather akward. But for ESO it's quite the opposite.
