Mount training, do you like it as it is right now?

    Typical HRC run in June:

Raidlead: go in and meet on the bridge.
Raidlead 30s later: alright, lets pull.
Arcanist: wait for me, I can't even see the bridge yet, damn horse. Also would need to empty my inventory.

    ....

    Couple of minutes later.

Raidlead: we finally made it to The Warrior. You know what to do, lets kill it.
Tank: pull in 3...2... Wait, stop. Whose Ezabi is that, please put it away.
Arcanist: ... but my inv is full...

I've never put more than 10 points into speed on any of my characters. I don't like rushing through games and I'd rather take my time and explore than get to my destination as fast as possible so I don't want my mounts to go too fast. If there was a way to go slower than the current top speed, or if the speed boost only affected galloping I might do it, but as it is I'm wary of going too far and ruining all my mounts.

Other than that I'm terrible at remembering to train my mount skills on any of my characters. I only do it if I remember when I'm passing a stable and I've got enough gold, so I think I've only maxed out carrying capacity and stamina on 2 characters who are both my oldest and the ones I've played the most. (Also one is my crafter so he's almost always in a city.)

So all in all I'd have to say the current system doesn't work well for me at all, but not for the same reasons it doesn't work for other people.

I do think it's strange that it's never been updated. It's a relic of the original, mandatory subscription business model (along with timed crafting research), giving players an incentive to log in every day and therefore keep their sub going even if they're not actively playing. That was redundant when the game switched to buy-to-play and personally I think Update 6, when they added collections and the mount skills changed to being character-specific would have been the ideal time to change it, but maybe they were wary of changing too much at the same time.

I spend a lot of time patiently explaining to new people how to get continous assault in the alliance war line. That 30% increase has made the difference in some cases on new people ready to quit.
After 100's of alts in all these years, I only ever maxed out one char, my main.

Sure, but can we agree that it’s a problem if people quit because they don’t know about continuous assault and only see the slow training rate of the mount? A lot of people that try ESO might not have friends playing it to teach them and a skill point that increase mount speed isn’t intuitive especially when the skill line is hidden until you do pvp.

I say this as a guy with 18 characters with max mount skills and the patience to do it two more times.

I agree that the mount training system in ESO is garbage designed to heave you into the crown store in frustration. I would like almost any other way to do it.

Its the reason I explain about continous assault every chance I get. I did it twice yesterday as I took people around to get the Dragon wayshrines.

I applaud your tenacity in being able to absorb the tedium of day to day training. But I can't do it ever again.

I have wasted all my seals or crowns at some point or another on alts but that bothers me. I inevitably destroy those chars. But as I really only play my main it is irrelevant to me what happens.

Right now I have 4 level 50 chars but none got past 22% trained. I just don't care anymore for myself.

Well one can level their new char and run around until the daily fed mount is fat enough to be significantly faster. When they took continuous attack away for a (long) while from PvE folks many people, myself included just did not use mounts at all.

I do not like the system for myself. But it is a good one for ZOS. It creates a lot of reasons to spend money in the crown shop. It's just that.

And it's systems like this, that create anough revenue to make ESO playable subscription free. For that I am thankful.

I was considering making this poll, but decided against. I am happy you did.

Let me spend my 45k ZOS. I am not buying from the crown store, and this predatory practice is why I haven't dropped a dime on the last 2 (3 in June) expansions.

If you were here at the beginning, it was per mount. Some mounts you purchased even started with like +10 Stamina at a higher cost. I didn't bother buying any other mount at the time, used the free 1 gold white Imperial Horse on all my characters before they switched to character wide.

One had a +10 stamina stat, and you had to feed it a specific food every day to raise that stat to 60.

One had a +10 inventory stat, and you had to feed it a specific food every day to raise that stat to 60.

One had a +10 speed stat, and you had to feed it a specific food every day to raise that stat to 60.

You could have a fast horse, or an inventory horse, or a stamina horse. But not all three at the same time. The white imperial horse had no +10 stats; you feed it the food for whichever stat you wanted. [and pray to the 8 you didn't make any mistakes with the type of food] The only "op" bonus for the people who bought the imperial edition was the white imperial horse cost 1 gold at the stable, instead of 42,700 gold for the "draft", "gaited", or "light" horses.

Time-gating mount training is one of the big complaints I've heard from new players.

Getting a really slow mount and then realizing you need to grind for months per character up is a big NOPE that drove away some of my friends who tried the game.

I can't imagine being a new player and being geeked about the game, seeing some cool mount in the store, spending $40 on it, and then just trot along slowly because of this mechanic. Seems like buzzkill to me.

    No.

Mount training originally was ludicrous, then someone somewhere realised that they weren't selling us any 'premium' mounts with the system as it was.

So they replaced it with a system that not only allowed for the sale of 'premium' mounts but also enabled the publisher to sell us the solution to the inconvenience it presented (thus making the player's disposable income the pivotal element of their relationship with this system).

Hopefully a long hard look at this will be part of the QoL changes in Q4.

Exactly. It's selling a solution. I want ZOS to make money. Heck, I spend $100s a year on the game. This though? It feels too nudge-like.

If your raidlead is semi-competent, one of the raid [guessing you're all grouped] has a banker and/or merchant, and everyone has access to those when you're grouped. The mount speed would still be an issue though.

I don't consider having to interrupt whatever questing path my character is on and get to a town with a stable to train my mount once a day compelling gameplay. Nor is timing my gameplay session to the ridiculous 20 hour clock - oh I can play in the morning today, oops sorry you played in the evening yesterday sucks to be me!

I think that once you have done it once you should be able to skip the grind and just pay the gold necessary for all the ranks. Heck I would be willing to pay 5x maybe more the gold amount but this isn't something I would ever spend crowns on.

I'd rather be able to pay it all off at once with in game gold. The once a day crap is just tiresome. I'm not buying Crown Store items for it.

That just encourages and rewards predatory marketing.

Guess i'm one of the minority here. i think mount training is fine as is. Thinking from a role-play standpoint... A horse just isn't magically faster, or sturdier or whatever in the real world. Takes a LONG time to train them and build that trust and dedication.

The way they have it now, is still kinda a cheat, but it's as close to real training as you can get in a game, and i enjoy it.

i straight up dont really bother with mount training until its fixed lol, i get it in slow trickles with the occasional training lessons from daily logins, or if i happen to be passing near a stablemaster waiting on a queue

i maxed out my mains mount and then said never again until they improve this system

I'm not in a huge hurry to go fast. I don't like going any faster than the speed we reach when maxing it at the Stablemaster, so I don't use continuous assault or any of the Champion Points that increase speed. But having to remember to put points into mount training every day for 6 months is ridiculous.

We are allowed to purchase all our bag and bank upgrades as soon as we have the gold to do it. Why is mount training any different?

I think they need to make it a gold dump again.

You should be able to train as many times as you want each day but the cost doubles each time. Then every 24 hours you go one training cost drops off.

    So example

    1g , 2g, 4g, 8g, 16g, 32g then if I stopped training for 3 days when I go back it would be 4g and start going up again. I'd have it start at the current 256g so 256, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096 etc.

Yes new players would still have to go a day or a two at a time, but existing players even ones with millions wouldn't be able to fully train a mount.

Why does it matter if an existing player wants to max out their mount? How does this impact you. Leave it 250g and remove the daily limit. Or better yet, account wide mount upgrades.

If it was like other skills and leveled with use, I’d be fine with it. Even combined with a once daily boost via training maybe. But just paying the fee daily, it’s not at all engaging gameplay.

I like mount training and legerdemain because they skill up slowly, especially the 1 upgrade per day of the mount training BUT the 1st speed levels of the mount training are a nightmare, it looks like you go faster by running, so I tend to "prepare" the new character doing only the mount speed upgrade for a few weeks then start actually playing it when the horse speed is acceptable.
