"Slight" problem with chat filter...

I wanted to chat with a player about the ESO economy, when I ran into a problem; you can't say the word 'economy', the chat filter forbids it. First of all, why? What swear or slur appears in the middle of 'economy' that would be so vulgar that not even an M-rated game can have it in zone chat? Second of all, if 'economy' itself is not supposed to be mentioned in chat, how can players discuss trading and pricing? It just seems unnecessary to forbid any mention of economics, just because of scammers. If anyone has answers to these two questions, let me know, ok?

Second through fourth letters are a very rude word

Trying very hard to work out how that is a rude word, but failing miserably

It's Spanish. You could try googling those four letters, but be warned, it is a very rude word.

The filter software protects the readers of chat text. The filter cannot know what language(s) readers can understand, so it protects us all from all the languages it supports.

IIRC there is an option to turn off the chat filter.

Thank you - I was struggling in English :)

The profanity filter is on your end. What I mean is, if you're seeing words getting bleeped then it's because of how you've got the profanity filter set in your game settings. Other players might be seeing your words without any bleeps in them, due to having the profanity filter turned off in their game settings. Just because you see it bleeped doesn't mean everyone else is seeing it bleeped as well, just the players who have the filter turned on. This lets you use profanity and see other players' profanity if you're okay with it, while letting other players not be forced to see your profanity if they don't want to.

    Chat profanity filter is client-side.
Turn it off and you are ok.

Settings -> Social -> Profanity filter = OFF

The profanity filter ends up censoring things that aren’t profanity though, because a subset of the letters might vaguely resemble something else. This is what OP has described. I can’t type “forming group” or “farming gear” because of this.

I don’t want to turn the filter off because there is a lot of stuff I’d rather not see in chat.

Profanity filters aren't made with context in mind. They're made to automatically censor words. Some filters are stronger than others. Most will censor profanity within words, like if you said the word "circumstances" it would probably censor letters 4-6. ESO's filter isn't as strong as others I've seen, which will censor between words as well. I can't think of any examples off the top of my head, but I used to play Maplestory, and its profanity filter would blur out stuff that appeared even if it was like 3 different words.

Unless chat filter has changed since I last forgot to turn it off, it ignores spaces and happily edits profane expressions like "whisper me" or "put on some armour".
