Hi - I'm in Australia and would love to join. I'm friendly and helpful and not into drama or politics. Always a bit shy about grouping and tend to solo a lot but would really like a guild that is non judgmental and where we can develop skills and learn together. @Vardra:)

Sisters, I have noticed that several of you had deposited weapons and armor into the guild bank, but no one was taking them out. Maybe we were all reluctant to take out valuable stuff, not wanting to seem impolite and so on. So yesterday I took the bold move of taking *all* of that stuff out. I then deconstructed it all for the crafting XP (you get way more XP deconstructing stuff made by other people), then crafted an equal number of new things and put them in the bank. I put in a bunch of level 36 items covering smithing, woodworking and tailoring. Note that you can deconstruct items which are too high a level for you to wield/wear; in fact you get tons of crafting XP doing that.

I'd like to encourage you all to do likewise. When I checked this morning, my stuff was all still sitting in the bank. Please, take it out, deconstruct it (or use it, if you want), then put your own stuff in the bank. Don't worry about the levels -- I still get more XP from taking apart someone else's level 6 stuff than from taking apart my own level 36 stuff, so no one should feel obliged not to take higher level stuff. If we all do this we can all level up our crafting skills without having to find and meet up with a crafting buddy in real time.

I've also been depositing recipes I already know, and ingredients I don't have a use for. Mind you, the recent change from auto-stacking to no auto-stacking has brought out my latent OCD leanings :-( I feel compelled to withdraw all the single instances of ingredients, stack them up in my inventory and then redeposit the stack. So if anyone has noticed the ingredient inventory in the bank fluctuating wildly, that's probably me taking things out, stacking them up all nice and proper, and then putting them back.

Thank you! I've taken a couple things out and tried to make an equivalent deposit. However, since I'm below level 10, and most stuff is above, I thought I couldn't deconstruct it. A new avenue is open for skill-building, yay!

Also: the stacking disorderliness puts a similar bee in my bonnet, lol.

Yesterday several Sisters were asking me questions about how to level up crafting skills, as though I were some kind of expert :) Made me feel like quite the wise old crone, dispensing my hard-earned wisdom to dewy young maidens :D

Well, even though I did turn 44 the other day, I'm not sure if I qualify as an old crone, and all my crafting knowledge comes from sites like tamrielfoundry.com. Nevertheless, since the same questions came up several times, and my answers were apparently helpful, I thought I would write some stuff down and post it here.

XP in Blacksmithing, Tailoring and Woodworking can be gained by creating new items or deconstructing items. You get no XP from refining raw materials. The item levels you can create depend on your passive skills in the relevant field, not on your character level. If you have unlocked the skill enabling you to use higher level materials, you can create items which you cannot wear or wield because they outlevel you. You can deconstruct items of any level, regardless of your own level or skills.

The biggest XP gains come from deconstructing items found in the world, or created by other players. Item creation comes in second as a source of XP, and deconstructing your own items gains you the least XP. For example, I just did an experiment and found that creating a level 24 Oak Bow got me 677 XP in Woodworking. Deconstructing that bow gave me 193 XP. Deconstructing a level 24 Oak Bow made by someone else (thanks to Aruna March for depositing the item used in this experiment) gave me 1451 XP -- more than double the points of construction, and nearly 8 times the points of deconstructing my own item. This means that you will almost always get more points from deconstructing someone else's item than from your own, even if there is a disparity in item level. There may be a point where this is no longer true eg. your own L48 item vs someone else's L1 item, but most of the time both partners in a deconstruction swap will benefit regardless of level.

The XP gained from creating or deconstructing something depends entirely on the item level. You get the same XP from creating a L24 dagger as you would from creating an L24 cuirass, even though the cuirass requires twice as many ingots. This means that you get the biggest return on investment from the items which require the fewest materials. Daggers are the best for Smithing. Bows or staves are best for Woodworking. There are lots of choices for Clothing, but shoes seem to be the preferred item as they are higher in the list of choices and so require fewer mouse clicks to select.

The fine folks as tamrielfoundry.com have really gotten deep into the weeds on this topic, and have identified which particular level within a given material's level span provides the most XP per unit of material. It turns out that the optimum levels are 6, 16, 26, 36 and 46. You will get more XP per ingot with a L6 iron dagger than with a L14 iron dagger.

What this all means is that these are the best items to make:

    Woodworking:
    Level 6 maple bow
    Level 16 oak bow
    Level 26 beech bow
    Level 36 hickory bow
    Level 46 yew bow

    Clothing/Tailoring:
Level 6 Jute (Homespun) or Rawhide shoes
Level 16 Flax (Linen) or Hide shoes
Level 26 Cotton or Leather shoes
Level 36 Spidersilk or Thick Leather shoes
Level 46 Ebonthread or Fell Hide shoes

    Blacksmithing:
    Level 6 iron dagger
    Level 16 steel dagger
    Level 26 orichalcum dagger
    Level 36 dwarven dagger
    Level 46 ebony dagger

I think that about covers it for those three kinds of crafting. Alchemy and Enchanting work a bit differently, but this old crone needs to take a rest now, so I'll leave those till later if there's any interest :)

Since the servers are down for maintenance, I thought I would dispense some wisdom on the topics of alchemy and enchanting... I know you've all been waiting with baited breath for my advice :-)

Seriously, I do hope this is helpful. If it isn't, or if I'm coming across as annoying/boring/pompous/bossy, then *please* tell me to tone it down! I got a lot of help from websites and more experienced players, and I just want to pass on the favor.

    Anyway.

    ALCHEMY.

Alchemy is very easy to level up, almost as easy as Provisioning. Just make tons of potions and you'll hit level 50 pretty quickly. The ingredients are the same across Tamriel, although each area seems to have a different mix ie. Mountain Flowers are common in some areas but rare in others. Nodes don't seem to have an equal chance of spawning each ingredient. For example, Water Hyacinth only spawns in water, the mushroom-types like to grow in the shade of trees or rocks, and Mountain Flowers prefer an open sunny spot.

I found it useful to spend Skill Points on Laboratory Use, which allows you to make 3-ingredient potions, and on Chemistry, which increases the number of potions created per crafting attempt (at Chemistry 3, you get 4 potions per batch of ingredients). I also unlocked Keen Eye, which makes nodes more visible. Some people may have naturally keen eyes, but personally I find that the nodes blend into the foliage without this skill.

There are many websites listing ingredient effects, but my favorite one is http://tamrieljournal.com/alchemy-simulator/, which lets you play around with different recipes. There are also iOs and Android apps which do this.

    My favorite recipes are:

Bugloss + Columbine + Mountain Flower -- restores Health, Magicka and Stamina simultaneously. I live off this stuff.

Blessed Thistle + Blue Entoloma + Namira's Rot -- increases your movement speed and makes you invisible. I call this my Quick Escape formula, though someone pointed out that it could equally be called a Sneak Attack formula, which I guess shows that I am way better at crafting than I am at fighting.

Cornflower + Lady's Smock + [Water Hyacinth or Namira's Rot] -- Restores Magicka, increases spell power and increases spell critical. Use one of these, then fire off an Ultimate and a couple of regular spells.

Blessed Thistle + Dragonthorn + Wormwood -- Restores Stamina, increases weapon damage and increases weapon critical. Take one before charging into battle!

The strength of the potion ( ie. the amount of Health restored, the degree to which your speed is increased etc.) depends on the level of the solvent (water) you use. The Solvent Proficiency skill unlocks the use of higher level waters. Solvents can be found in bodies of water (looks like a bubbly spot in a river) or in urns, jars, bottles and backpacks. The water you get from a lake or river is usually of a lower quality than water you find in containers. If you're low on solvent, the best thing to do is head to town and raid the taverns and houses. Pick up all the bottles you can find, and look in all the jars and urns.

Note that negative effects of ingredients have no positive uses. You can't poison your enemies, you can only poison yourself. If you want to spend 3 Skill Points on Snakeblood you can eliminate negative effects 100%, however at least so far I haven't found this necessary.

I think that's about it. Also, apparently the maintenance thing has been cancelled and the servers are back, so I think I'll leave Enchanting for another post.

Alrighty then... since no one told me to shut up, today's lecture will be about enchanting :p

The creation of an Enchantment glyph requires the combination of three runes, one each from the categories of Aspect, Essence and Potency. Runes can be found in runestones in the landscape, or in Heavy Sacks and chests.

There are 17 Essence runes, which are triangular and emit a yellow glow in the wild, and all are usable at Enchanting level 1. There are 28 Potency runes, which are square and give runestones a blue glow. Potency runes come in levels 1-9, and before you can use any but the first level you must both invest a Skill Point in Potency Improvement and reach a required level of Enchanting Skill. There are only 5 Aspect runes, which are round and emit an orange glow, and each one requires a Skill Point and a required Enchanting level to unlock.

For a comprehensive list of runes, their meanings, and the glyphs that can be made, I recommend http://tamrieljournal.com/crafting-and-professions/enchanting/

Essence runes are the most commonly found. I have a ton of them. I keep 10 of each kind in my bank, and have been depositing additional ones into the Guild Bank. Potency runes are the second-most common -- I usually find quite a few, but not so many that I have more than 10 of a kind. Aspect runes are the rarest, and their rarity is what makes enchanting is the hardest skill to level up.

At first Enchanting levels up quite quickly because you get a big experience boost every time you use a new runestone and decipher its meaning. However, once you've identified all the runes you can initially use (17 Essence, 4 Potency and 1 Aspect), the experience curve levels out rapidly as it becomes reliant on making your own glyphs, and deconstructing glyphs found in the wild or made by other players. All except the luckiest players will reach a point where they have a huge catalog of usable Essence and Potency runes, a bunch of unusable Potency and Aspect runes, and will only rarely find a usable Aspect rune. I got to that point at Enchanting 12. Every time I found a wild glyph or a usable Aspect I would rush to an enchanting table, but my Enchanting XP bar would barely move, and I despaired of ever reaching Enchanting 16 when I could unlock the ability to use some of the higher level Aspects I was hoarding. It was quite frustrating!

I finally found a way around this impasse by making a deal with a Veteran level player who was advertising high-level glyphs for sale in Zone chat. I offered to give him all my unusable runes if, in return, he would use half of them to craft high level glyphs which he would then give to me. At that point I had something ridiculous like 15 Denata (blue-quality Aspect, 10 Rekuta (purple-quality Aspect) and 5 Kuta (gold-quality Aspect), plus a load of unusable Potency runes. I handed them all over to my Veteran buddy and he gave me back a bunch of blue, purple and gold glyphs. I deconstructed them and WHOOSH!! went my Crafting XP bar as it blew through a bunch of levels. I think I got up to Level 17. After that Aspect runes remained the bottleneck, but since I could use more of the ones I found and I could make higher level glyphs, my leveling speed wasn't as slow as it had been earlier.

Nevertheless, Enchanting is the crafting area I have the lowest level in. My main character (Eiledh) is Level V1, but only enchanting 24. I have 3/4 Aspect Improvement skill unlocks (the next available at Enchanting 31) and 5/9 Potency Improvement skill unlocks (the next available at Enchanting 25). I can't yet use the Kuta Aspect rune, or the Potency runes Rera, Pode, Derado, Kedeko, Recura, Rede, Cura and Kude.

Since I can't use Kutas to make legendary/gold-quality glyphs, I can't offer the same deal as I made with that wonderful Veteran player I met. However, if any of you are stuck in the same rut as I was, chasing elusive Tas while building up an unusable collection of Jejotas, Denatas and Rekutas, I would be delighted to do what I can. If you are willing to give me your unusable Aspect runes (either by in-game mail or by trade if we're online at the same time) I will make them into glyphs (which will help me level up) and then give all of those glyphs to you for deconstruction (which will help you level up). Since Aspect runes decide the color/quality of a glyph, and thus the amount of XP to be gained, I can't really do the same with Potency runes, but you're still welcome to send 'em to me :-)
