Just finished it all a day or two ago. Ugh. Drivel. I did like the mechanics of the final showdown, and fleeing the rising lava, but every element of the story was poor.
The needless toing and froing, every second action was either travel to castle mornard or travel to whatshernames house.
Fetch quest, fetch quest, fetch quest. "Interact with the three things for me so I can lock/unlock the thing."
Characters were forgettable and cardboard, could've been reskins of previous dlc characters, and I honestly thought two of the main druid ladies were the same person, the one from the prologue and the stone lore druid looked, acted and sounded the same. And having Mornard and the druid lady have a will they wont they vibe was just lame, I'm glad they didn't, but it was eyerolling whenever they mentioned it.
At the very end when you're chatting to all the people, I think it's Mornard(?) who gives the player a line about what the legacy of the Bretons is (oh forgot about that), and its some hallmark dross about knights and druids living in harmony.
I really wish this dlc series could've delivered something good story-wise. The twist was laughable. I was kind of hoping the Ascendant Lord was a false flag op by Bacaro and then when the 3 alliance leaders couldn't make the peace talks work he would snap, and say fine I'll do it myself. So the false flag becomes real. But then that's still operating within the disappointing story of yet another large scale calamity, instead of small scale intrigue.
We might’ve had a tale of political intrigue entirely contained within High Isle Society, various houses jostling for position, duelling and hardcore chivalric honour, learnt a dark secret about the elven mingling of blood, and then Galen could've been the flip side of that with druids, with all three houses in conflict and the volcano erupting. Maybe human sacrifice to the volcano is required. Maybe the player would have to choose which house/circle to support, with a slightly different outcome possible depending. You could make the seats of power instanced so that each player has their own decision upheld.
In any case, the legacy of the Bretons was a big disappointment in a year of them.
Eso needs a hard reset on how they deliver content.
I'd just add that if you had options for picking sides it would become a conversation among the player base about who they chose, much like the original companions, creating a bit of banter and positive interactions. Team Firesong or Team Stonelore might’ve been a thing. Kinda gimmicky but something to get people invested. As it is, many players are just discussing how bad things are.
My absolute favorite story this year was the Tales of Tribute storyline. In just a few quests they delivered a compelling story with relatable and easy to love characters. Go Gonfalon!
