I have both Morrowind and Oblivion downloaded, but I haven't tried either one yet.
(I've been aware of TES since Daggerfall was in development, but ESO was the first TES game I tried, then Skyrim.)

Oblivion is a better Game than Skyrim, and Morrowind is a better Experience than Oblivion.

Others have touched on what Oblivion is. Morrowind makes you work harder and encourages exploration because you will get lost. Oh, and your not supposed to connect on every weapon swing. The story is richer and deeper because they do not have Voice Acting telling the story. Also, if you try to go somewhere you are not ready for, you will get slapped.

I play Oblivion, Skyrim, Daggerfall, Arena, Shadowkey, Redgaurd...and I play the hell out of ESO it's not really an either-or to me..and over the years ESO is becoming much more like Skyrim only I can hang out with my friends and quest with them...

But I guess the thread was made as an ESO bad Single player TES better type thing..../shrug.

I played through Skyrim again recently and had a blast. I'll be starting another game soon (on the GOG version).

I also have Oblivion on GOG and will play it again at some point. Since it doesn't have gamepad support, I'll only be able to play it in small doses, which means it'll take me months to go through it, but that's fine.

(I played the hell out of Morrowind when it came out. If Bethesda were to remaster it, I'd be first in line to get it and play the hell out of it again).

My problem with Daggerfall is that I can't play first person any more. Screws my head and vision up too bad.

Main thing I hated about Skyrim, is something that's now been largely removed or mitigated: the random dragon (and, with Dawnguard, vampire) attacks on towns that could kill off a number of townsfolk - either because the monsters did so directly, or because half the town turned hostile to you when you accidentally hit one of the civilians who insists on charging the mobs with just their bare fists.

I mean, "Merchant X / Quest Giver Y / Innkeeper Z got killed, now their place is taken by Civilian A, B or C" seems a nifty idea at first, but what actually happens is "reload from save and try again till it doesn't happen, Bethesda just wasted half an hour of my time".

I'm also glad that the common Thieves who hit Riften regularly (and, occasionally, Riverwood) are no longer aggressive except towards town guards. Because until a few patches ago, they used to also keep on killing NPCs like Bolli or Marise Aravel (a pair of sidequest givers), or one of the Valerius siblings in Riverwood (merchants)...

You can use a gamepad with Oblivion. Might need something like XPadder or similar. I dont remember exactly how I did it. But I remember trying a controller without too much effort way back in the dim dark past.

I've been playing Oblivion every now and then lately. Imperial, sword and board (but mostly because no weapon beats Umbra's damage) with a bit of magic here and there. It was interesting to compare locations in that game with ESO's, though it was so depressing to see what filthy dumps Linchal Manor and Pantherfang Chapel become in the 3rd Era. I set the keys to be as similar to ESO"s as possible, which made the transition between games feel smoother (though at times I'd press an Oblivion-only key while playing ESO and vice-versa). Oh, and it's fascinating how the older game's Dagonland is still more dreadful than ESO's version. On the other hand, goodness gracious but it's hard to look at Oblivion's orcs...

Last time I played oblivion was sometime in 2016, Skyrim even before that. They're still one of my favorite games and what got me into ESO in the first place.
I was mainly a battlemage in both. Loved the spellcrafting in Oblivion a lot!

Sadly can't get into Morrowind myself, but I have watched a playthrough of it which was a fun way to experience for me.

Reason it has been so long is because I wanted to get into streaming/making playthroughs of it, while experiencing it almost anew. Still didn't get to do it
Can't wait until I can, like I said I love both games dearly. They essentially shaped my teenhood.

    title implications aside. . .

I went to oblivion over skyrim because the innovations of skyrim didn't age very well (imo) and thus it does not hold up as well. skyrims dragons and radiant quests, touted features at the time, makes almost all questing in skyrim feel like busywork (some hand-crafted quests can be mistaken for radiant)

it was fun revisiting a more handcrafted experience though i instantly went back to min max mode with my character, yada yada +5 every level spam this level that.

but i cannot help but play a khajiit. . .

    :3

so, when did you last play oblivion and what was your character? race / combat style

if not oblivion, last tes mainline and same question!

I've been saying this for years.

For example, when you finally exit the sewers, it seems like it takes quite a long time to jog to Chorrol and there's alot that can happen along the way. When I say alot can happen, I really mean the encounters seem more organic and less scripted, less forced. Although some encounters along the road make sense, but having like this open world where things can happen at random makes greater sense.

And in Skyrim, the game doesn't feel very organic and the map is kind of small with the mountains being too dominate.

Oblivion just has this feeling of being chaotic and spontaneous, similar to real life and not everything forced. The story in Oblivion also feels like its a big deal rather than in Skyrim doing quests feels like we're checking a box rather than invested in what's going on.

The quests in Oblivion is very good, it has an decent magic and enchanting system.
You can make goblin warlords permanently hostile to goblins: popcorn time.

Leveling up is pretty messed up and level scaling is way to enforced.
    The AI is hilarious:
Couple of examples: Npc talking to each other
shoot an enemy from sneak and get behind cover so they can not see you before the arrow hit, they will accuse random neutral animals of shooting them and attack.
The main enemy group summon an special armor then attacking, they will also use this attacking hostiles before you become hostile to them.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Haven't played Oblivion but Morrowind with some choice mods is the most immersive PC RPG experience I've ever had.

Skyrim left me wanting the older Elder Scrolls/Morrowind skill and attribute system and the lack of markers. Plus I have to be honest, I don't like the cold snowy viking aesthetic. Different strokes for different folks. Skyrim is like a dumbed-down version of TES.

I know graphics don't make a game but something about Oblivion's puts me off. The NPCs all look kind of bloated and just "off". The setting is perfect for me though so I should check it out some day.

What I would love beyond imagining is a total remake of classic Daggerfall with modern graphics and sound. Could be an impossible feat - a game world that massive with modern 2022 and future graphics? Imagine the download size lol.

I heartily recommend Oblivion, but check the mods first to fine tune the experience. The vanilla NPCs do look hideous on average, but that can be fixed with Oblivion Character Overhaul or a similar face mod. Otherwise, the game is great. Wandering around the game world is strangely soothing and relaxing with the beautiful landscapes and music.

Yes, a Daggerfall remake would be cool! It would require a beast of a PC to run, though. But maybe it could be done by pruning the amount of, well, everything, to something like one-tenth of the original. It would still be massive (still 6000 square kilometres of terrain, hundreds of cities etc), but more manageable and with less useless random copy-paste stuff.

One more thing about Oblivion was the Knights of the Nine DLC totally destroyed the shrine system for me- before that you could just go to any shrine but after you had to get rid of your bad vibes by visiting them all. I never finished Sheogorath's DLC but I like Sheogorath in ESO better and enjoyed the Mages Guild in ESO.

There are some games that make me nauseous. I've noticed that if it's going to happen, it's often a game built on the Unreal engine. I'm not sure why, but I always groan when I see that logo come up. If it's an isometric game, it's fine, but if it's a game played in first person, there's a good chance I won't be able to play it without wanting to bring up my last meal.

Fortunately, I don't feel that way when playing ESO.

I tried Oblivion once, only 6 hours total and that was spent thru the tutorial and walking along the forest to Chorrol then Bruma before quitting. I just could not get past how dated it feels, and trying to mod it seemed as difficult as wrestling a Bear.

I am highly anticipating the fan development of Skyblivion, however.

Last session I played the "Explore the new block bug" quest in ESO instead of Skyrim as I intended. So the patch fixing (some of?) the old block bugs did bring in a morsel of interesting content to explore, at least until it gets fixed in few weeks or months.

I was reluctant to play 76 because it started so different compared to 4.
But started a week ago as I got already bored from High Isle and Galen. I usually spend weeks farming new furnishing mats and plans in new zones, but since Blackwood the droprate is very low, so it no longer feels rewarding to do the dailies.
I also would have to grind lots of mats to upgrade all my 72 toons after the U35 changes, as some hit like wet noodles now.
It is a pity, as the new zones are visually very nice.

What I like in 76 is the mix of soloplay and event based group play.
Very different quest lines, Brotherhood of Steel, Raiders, Overseer (main) etc. Then when you need a break, you just look on the map for a short event (like killing a "worldboss"). Immedeatly some people join, and 5 minutes later you get a nice reward (gold and legendary weapon/gear)
. Very different to ESO on xbox EU, where you can wait hours to find a co-player to kill a worldboss, if any.

I am so attracted atm, that I even skip my daily endeavours in eso and just login every 2-3 days to fill up guild trader slots. ESO certainly needs some change to feel more rewarding and less punishing again.
