lore and keeping up with guilds
that's pretty much it, no other similar competitors in the market... never cared for pve achievements, questing is a mega easy railroadfest, pvp isn't exciting anymore, combat is, well, floaty mmo combat and very far from satisfying... i'm just here for the IP, folks

So I’m asking what keeps you all motivated to keep playing? Is it because of the time and money you’ve invested? Is it because “what else am I going to do” mentality? Or because of your gaming friends?

Honestly? Just being in Tamriel. I just need it to be a convincing experience.

Unlike many, I actually do enjoy the quest stories and pick a character that story will belong to for playing through that content. I've always played RPG games more for living through a story as a character than for beating game mechanics. That doesn't mean I haven't enjoyed gaming as a gamer, but I definitely lean more into enjoying games as a roleplayer (in my head). I love Elder Scrolls lore and all the world building, and being a character in a story in that world is why I keep coming back.

What’s been keeping me going at the moment is the people that I regularly play dungeon and trial content with, and Dreadsail Reef in particular is a real light in the general darkness of the shambles that is ESO right now. I have supremely enjoyed doing that trial from scratch, working with the rest of my group to come up with strategies that work for us and not looking up how other people do it. That’s given all of our group a real sense of accomplishment that you just don’t get with already-known content. The current inability to log is affecting our planning and strategising right now, but hopefully that will be one of the fixes we get next week.

On nights when I don’t play with any of my groups, I tend to log in, do my dailies, then go play Elden Ring or Civ6 or Hades instead, although with the new dlc I’m working through that story instead of playing elsewhere, for now.

Recently, I was also motivated to dust off a dd (i main a tank), and his gear was a good 2–3 years out of date. It was actually very good motivation to farm the hell out of Falkreath Hold. The reason I needed to prep a dd is because one of my friends who is also a tank still needs to farm some gear from vRG, and of our regular team, I was the only support that could switch to dd without too much hassle.

It keeps coming back down to the people I play with, essentially. You know you’re friends and not just gaming colleagues when you spend time after a trial still chatting together on discord <3

I have done Cadwell’s gold on two characters and with the way they implemented account wide achievements, and how insultingly easy overland is, there’s deffo no motivation for me to play that lot through again. Companions are more a hindrance and nuisance than a help, I don’t rp, and the card game doesn’t appeal to me. More trials and dungeons and group content in general, please!

To see what ZOS will do next! Just when I thought they could not top AwA and Update 35, they released Firesong and the forums blew up with folks posting they were crashing 4 times in 5 minutes! And the reactions on ESO Reddit to the free guar pet are priceless entertainment!

OK, sarcasm aside: Trials with guild mates are fun. And pretty much any other group activity with guild mates. Doing all the quests with another family member is also fun.

I love the Elder Scrolls lore and the PC games. Not sure if I want to get the next PC game since we are probably looking at 5 years or so before we see it.

I keep my ESO account merely because I have friends through the game and I have spent so much money in the game I would hate to lose all of that. I let my sub lapse though finally.

New content and achievements keep me playing. But those activities won't keep me going forever. Content drops seem to be thinner and don't take as long to complete. AwA means I no longer play alts. As it is now, my playtime has gone from a few hours a day to anywhere from 15 to 90 minutes. That higher number will shrink once I complete what I want to do in Galen.

I expect to take breaks from the game in 2023 because I'll run out of the stuff that keeps me playing.

I am still playing after all these years because I am part of a guild/ community that keeps things interesting and new. I am very upset with the way the game has taken a turn in the past two patches. But like every MMO I just sit and wait till the devs get it together and fix things. There are things wrong in this game that have been "bugs" since the launch but I have learned to overlook those things. The new bugs and garbage changes have pushed me a few times to actually think about walking away from ESO but let's get real... There isn't a better game out there to go to for my play style. So I stick with it and wait for fixes while enjoying my guild/ community that I am part of.

Elder Scrolls is an awesome world to explore and quest in. Right now I'm working on my goal of completing all the quests in the game. Once I finish that I'll move on to something else. Maybe furnishing, crafting, fishing all zones, endgame PvE, or perhaps even PvP. There's so much content in this game.

When the pandemic hit ESO became the game I decided to use to fill the time. I had never played it before and had been reading mixed reviews about it for years. There was a big sale one day for the prerelease of Greymoor and I jumped in headfirst to Elsweyr not knowing anything about where any of this would lead. I pretty much played the story completely out of order but I was interested in PvE endgame content so I had read tons of build/dps guides and followed a bunch of content creators. I spent several hours since in hard mode trials and dungeons and have grown weary of the grind every update to remain relevant in the endgame community.

I play with 2 groups only in endgame now and we don’t take ourselves seriously. We won’t ever complete trifecta’s but honestly the time and energy required to progress Godslayer or Planesbreaker is not worth it. It’s hard to describe spending 4-5 nights a week practicing the same mechanics over and over again and how incredibly mind numbing that can be. Titles like EOF and XS are hard enough and out of reach for casual players and those take about half the time to prog as the trifectas.

So what I’ve done after being lost chasing lore books and skyshards all over Tamriel with a few quest lines thrown in is to go back and try to play this game in some semblance of order which the game itself does not even set you on a clear path. You need a guide to play this game in order and so that you understand where some of the main characters fit in. My first days in Elsweyr I was left wondering why I should know Abnur Tharn and Cadwell because they seemed to know me.

Beyond that and as I started a new adventure I see just how much things all tie together. The zone quests and characters tie the overall story together in a way that is much more understandable than bouncing from place to place piece mealing it all together. And still there are side quests that tie each zone story together even more with characters that might make an appearance later and have more interesting dialogue to share albeit without a quest marker over their head.

Some zone you might want to blast through because they are highly inconvenient to navigate or you find them to be a bit bland or uninteresting. Malabar Tor is a popular zone to rush through, but did you know you can save the sister of the Green Lady and it comes with dialogue later in the zone or that you can actually get some resolution on the story of what happened to the Hound. He’s the main antagonist of the zone but as with all other things in Tamriel has been used by a certain Daedric prince as another pawn in their game.

This sort of stuff is easy to miss in the game which wraps up the main quest lines neatly if you choose to skip events and quests or fleshes things out completely if you are willing to look in every corner.

I started to learn this with the release of the Blackwood chapter when I literally followed every quest marker that appeared even if it sidetracked me from the main quest. I had been reading how it tied Greymoor together which I found the story to be lacking and now that I see the impact it had on Blackwood I had some regrets not doing this for other chapters.

This is why I’ve gone from hardcore endgame raider to over invested quester just about a month ago. I’m much more interested in how it all ties together rather than grinding the next mythic item or meta gear set. The one wish I had was to be able to replay the dungeon stories to better tie the prologues together without having to group. Soloing many of those DLC dungeons is not possible even for a seasoned endgamer like myself and those little bits of story do have some impact so long as you actually take the time to listen and explore. Group finder is not friendly to this playstyle and the time it takes to put 4 people together willing to play story time in graven deep takes more time than it should. Overland is too easy, DLC dungeons too hard. Can we a find happy medium please?

All that to say, what keeps me playing. Honestly it’s a great game, but I can see where people burnout in all phases from endgame raider to casual quester. There is a real quest fatigue that can set in at times and it’s hit me a few times already in my new adventure and I’m only into Deshaan doing Cadwell’s silver. I still have to complete this alliance (and my personal least fav zone Shadowfen) plus the whole DC map where the quest fatigue can be felt in Glenumbra alone. I know it all gets much more interesting once I get into the DLC zones and I’m trying my best to play through it all. So far though other than the quest fatigue it’s going well and I’m better understanding the ebb and flow of the ESO universe.

With that back down the rabbit hole I go.

    For me, it's my characters.

I have invested a lot of time to not only lvl them up, but to craft their unique looks, styles, outfits, as well as the backstories i have written for them in my head.
A Nord mercenary turned monster hunter turned hero of Skyrim, a Redguard pirate with an affinity for stealing things and turning up in the wrong place at the wrong time, a Breton noble, who's a relic hunter, a reclusive Bosmeri hunter and nature keeper and his wandering Orc shaman partner (i promise, it just works), an Altmer Psijic that lost his legs during Summerset events and got it replaced with mechanical ones (thx Sotha Sil), a former Imperial officer that has become an assassin after the Empire's fall, a Khajiti dragonslayer, an ancient Dunmer witch of house Dagoth (yes, the infamous 6th house) that uses Soul Gems to extend her lifespan, and a Redguard necromancer (the irony of it all).

With all the love and care i have put into these characters, they are the sole reason i play this game.
