Ultimately we know the plot will involve helping/being betrayed by the rulers and fighting some secret organisation or cult who plan to rule/destroy the world as told over an “epic” year long adventure. So I guess setting doesn’t really matter outside of what art assets we want to see more of.

I'm still hoping they're ditching that format. It's just... Not doing it for me.

Think about it though, what else is there? The Questline HAS to have a big bad, so it's either a Mortal Cult/Organization, or a Daedric Entity. Otherwise, would people pay for content where everything was pretty peaceful? No conspiracies or plots, not much fighting. I don't say this as an insult this time but most people have short attention spans, and need big bads to keep interested.

definitely think it is worth the price tag because knowing them they might add a new mechanic to the game and honestly id only buy expansions/dlc to further experience tamriel... as most probably would
some of the zones i pre-ordered or would have were orsinium, summerset, and elsweyr. elsweyr was worth it due to geography and dragon fights even though the story wasnt that great in my opinion.. (necromancer is good as well)
loved orsinium and pretty much feel the same about summerset as elsweyr..

what i'm saying is sometimes setting can be enough with what it provides..

Considering the continued support of older consoles like PS4, which limits implementation of new features like classes, skill-lines, raising housing furnishing limits and such - moving to Telvanni Peninsula seems quite a logical way.

Older models, textures and furnishing can be re-used, which shall definitely decrease the need to implement a whole bunch of brand new resources. And for the main Chapter feature we may get Farming as the most of flora objects are already in the game. B)

I don't want to post the same in 2 different threads, but this is my idea of what would be a nice change of direction for ESO's quests (from the other thread):

The issue of older generational consoles is a major one, and I honestly think that if ESO is to reach its potential ZOS needs to stop supporting the older gen consoles with DLC and instead launch them only on next gen and PC. This is would not only allow for more content but also potentially further QOL enhancements which are desperately needed.

Wherever we go next year, ZOS needs to be brave and move away from older generation consoles.

Ashes ... oh you mean on ESO? Ummm.

I think if ZOS wanted to bump up the player numbers they need to go back to either Skyrim and maybe have a dragon mount OR go back to Morrowind and open up the Telvanni peninsula. Both PCs games brought new players to the TES franchise and there still may be enough popularity for those games that players may return to go back to these zones again but in the 2nd Era. The writing would have to be spot on and so would the game's performance.

Either way they would need to add PvP content.

My first thought was the Telvanni dealing with global warming.

I'm going to throw a wildcard out there and say next year will be the Telvanni attempting an invasion of Valenwood. Maybe we'll get the Telvanni Peninsula in Q2 and find out they "stole" Fallenesti and are attempting to convert it into a fungal tower, then head there in Q4. The trees are crumbling, the fungi are taking over.

I think this year's tackling of Bretons, despite little High Rock remaining, goes to show there are plenty of options.

How satisfying those alternatives might be is another question entirely though. Arguably, you can't really separate the race from their land in the story of Tamriel without really losing something. While I think that the world artists, as usual, did an absolutely STUNNING job this year rendering the world, I certainly felt that this year.

Someone in an old thread linked an even older discussion with the devs which explained that Bethesda had forbidden ZOS Falinesti. But if this were to change, I think that there are lots of interesting things they could do. Personally I love the idea of Falinesti in the Fields of Regret, or even Shivering Isles. Arguably, though, you have to ask to what degree ZOS can do justice to a massive, ambulating tree city with the technology they have. No one wants to see it halfassed.
    Finedaible wrote: »

I think choosing a side would be impossible to implement,

For the sake of argument only, I wonder if it would, though? I can imagine where this might result in low impact on the world. The biggest barrier would be the amount of writing required, but that's something I'd really love to see ZOS push. I admit there's probably a lot of stuff that I don't anticipate.
but I am glad you pointed out the lack of player agency. As I mentioned in my previous post at least being able to affect certain outcomes slightly like with the Clockwork City/Mages Guild questlines goes a long way to provide that Elder Scrolls experience. We haven't seen any significant player agency after Summerset with the change to the 'year-long-theme' format. I get that this simplified format might have made things easier on devs and writers but it's just shallow and does not carry the same care and quality that Elder Scrolls has been known for. These days it's just a slideshow story with false choices playing in front of the Vestige's eyes with no difference in outcome. I think they should go back to their roots and look at some of the quest designs from the original base game zones and early dlc like with the Thieve's Guild, Shazah and Khali in Reaper's March, or the choice of Sir Hughes' fate - the reason this choice was so memorable for me is it made you think about the possible repercussions your choice could possibly bring to the Covenant. They really need to give players a stake in the story for them to feel invested.

Agree very much with everything you've added. I'll add that sometimes, even in base-game, it was done poorly. There's an example in a Bangkorai Delve
where you have to choose which orc tribe is written into the history books. The premise is hard to work with because it would be so easy to report instead what you actually encounter, but the writer rams you into that plot regardless. Worse still, there's absolutely no reason, no hook to choose one over the other. Both clans feel exactly the same, so there's absolutely no reason to care and every reason to disengage.

Conversely, there is at least one example during a Firesong side quest where you have to make a difficult decision, and they didn't pull punches. I was sort of torn on this one: yes, it represents a difficult choice. But there wasn't a lot to base your choice on, imo. It felt like a coinflip situation. But that's just my take, and I was actually really happy that they'd put that in there, and hope that they do more going forward.
I would not mind if instead of a whole new thing they would give us another really big thieves guild and dark brotherhood aventure. There is so much they can do with that.

Yes, I would LOVE to see more of this. I think the heists and sacraments are really fun- its a shame they didn't take more. Personally, I love this gameplay far more than, say ToT, in that it puts you into the world more. I think all of the guilds are criminally underutilised, and I want more of them (even if they just serve as sources of a few new radiant quests every season), but also want to add that I think the gameplay added by TG/DB represent interesting mechanics that I wish they would integrate more into stuff like dungeons so that they could be engaged in a more personalised way that just the same old stack and burn stuff.

I loved the guild DLCs, especially DB. the idea of building up trust, doing missions, learning about the characters and unraveling an underlying plot is all I need.

They should start properly revisiting the guilds by the way, I loved being part of a guild in all the elder scrolls games but they are kind of dormant now...

It would actually be pretty good storytelling if the next time around if we're building trust and comraderie with characters, the Vestige has to.3nd up betraying them for a morally gray reason. Make the player believe they have no choice, that in the grand scheme betrayal is the only way, and leave us feeling deeply phased by it.

If its middle Skyrim I want Falkreath hold to be in it post attack with Eerika as the Jarl. Depending on if you did the dungeon she will acknowledge our help.
The game has already broken continuity with play how you want and characters appearing in multiple zones at same time.

The race that's longest overdue for additional content is Bosmer. They had a lot of lore added in the base game, but virtually nothing since then. Personally, I would enjoy a Bosmer chapter, especially in Falinesti (although I didn't realize there was that old post prohibiting it). However, I'm not sure it will happen this close to High Isle since we just had jungles and "pretty."

The Redguards could also use new lore, and Hammerfell is an environment we haven't visited in a while. Plus, there's plenty of space on the map. I'm just not sure ZOS will tackle it since that might cut into ES VI territory. If they do, I think they would have to use an isolated area that leaves space for ES VI to invent things. Of course, we just had an island, so I don't know about this one.

It does seem like there are a lot of clues pointing to the Telvanni Pennisula. It would provide a nice change of pace regarding environment and something a little darker/weirder than this year. I wouldn't be mad about it. My only reservation is that we've had a Dunmer chapter, and there are still other races waiting for a turn. Also, I hope if they do this area, they don't feel obligated to add another Dunmer companion before adding the other races to that system.

I know some people would love to see Whiterun, but we had a Nord chapter not that long ago. I think ZOS has capitalized on nostalgia enough lately. Personally, I would not be excited to go back to Skyrim so soon. I'd rather see an area we've never visited before.

Orcs, Altmer, Khajiit, Argonians, and Bretons have all had dedicated chapters or DLCs already. Blackwood was mainly Argonians and Imperials, and Imperials play a large role in several zones. As much as I'd love to see the remaining furstock and the Tenmar forest, I don't think there's any real indication that these races or their homelands are up next.

I always love learning more about the non-playable races, but I also don't think ZOS is going in that direction (at least not until they've given each playable race their due). Guilds could use some love, I agree, but not a year-long story's worth. Maybe add a feature or new system to them.

As far as the story goes, I always love the writing and enjoy questing in each new zone, but I agree that it's not really surprising to have a big bad Daedric Prince pulling the strings. I think the writers recognize this and are trying to do different things. Even with Rada, they let us see his backstory a bit. I agree that more meaningful choices are also a good idea and add to replayability. I'm actually playing the Daggerfall Covenant storyline for the first time, and I love how the initial decision I made on the island about whether or not to destroy the artifact follows me around throughout the zones in the form of simple conversations with the crew.

The year-long format doesn't bother me. I don't think it hinders storytelling as much as some people say. In fact, I sort of like the predictability of releases. If there have been fewer features lately, my guess is that has more to do with console constraints and the pandemic.

No matter what ZOS decides, I will look forward to exploring new zones and getting new lore. I'll just be more excited for some than others.
