I tried to get into the questing but I to find the stories kinda weak and the characters uninteresting. I also tried to get into trials and pve but honestly the things that draw me to that sort of stuff simply don't exist in this game so that got somewhat stale too since it was just all about rote memorization. PvP definitely has it's issues but with the right crowd on the right nights Cyrodiil really can be a blast. (just maybe take it in doses since it's easy to get frustrated too when you see the lack of care given to that part of the game).

The whole Elder Scrolls universe. For better or worse, it still pulls me back in.

At the end of the day, it's just a game. I'll ride this out until the end or until I get bored.

For me, it's primarily friends, if not for my friends I likely wouldn't still be here considering my other reasons for playing have been hit hard over the past year or so.

The second reason is my love of theorycrafting builds. I love the idea to looking at different sets/abilities and trying to find ways to make them strong.

The third reason was how fun my main (magsorc) used to be to play.

Unfortunately, with the constant changes that are heavily pushing players into using only the newest sets, my second reason has become less and less rewarding and with the constant pigeonholing of magsorc into zoo sorc (which I don't enjoy) for years now, as well as the constant gutting of sorc in general for the sins of stamsorc, overtuned abilities and bugged sets, my interest in this game has severely waned recently.

I got lost in Tamriel when Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind came out and I'm not ready to leave yet. For about 15 years, Elder Scrolls games have been about the only game I have played. I got lost hardcore.

This particular game? Lack of viable competition in MMO genre. MMOs in general? Mature MMOs tend to have a lot of content and replayability compared to other genres.

Because Starfield isn’t out yet. Although, the prospect of having to be a human again and learn to talk in the first person is a bit scary.

Also because ESO communities, both the forum and in-game, have the nicest players.

My motivation springs from avoiding burnout in the first place, I suppose. I enjoy being in Tamriel, but I don't force myself to log in when its not really what I feel like doing. If it starts feeling more like a chore than a source of fun, then I play a different game or do something else entirely until the idea of logging into ESO is more appealing again.

I've never been the kind of player that sticks with a single game and keeps to a regular schedule of "x" amount of time a day, but if I like an MMO I'll probably be around until it dies. Just not all the time. Housing is a big draw for me, I love the housing in ESO (although I do think they could offer more in the rotation) because there are so many choices both in terms of the home itself and the furnishings.

    • Very nice itens
    • No bugs at all.... (I dont recall of pay one item and get two, or buy without the amount need it)
    • Just pay and get it
    • You can preview and see all details
    • etc....
    • Oh, and ofc.... Endeavors. Nothing more crazy then spend one year to buy something for 16k Endeavors .

But then, i love go into Craglorn and shout for hours to find people for one Trial, then start all over cuz they link fake achivm.
In less words. I love spend hours in front of computer shouting or look at CrownStore. I just love it!!!

By now the only thing keeping me playing this game is my Godslayer prog team. GS has been my big goal since I started getting into group PvE back in late 2019, and now that I'm in a consistent prog team for it with people I enjoy playing with, I'm going to stick with it until I get GS. That being said, as soon as I get GS, and our group disbands, I'm uninstalling and not coming back for a long time.

ESO isn't my main game. I use it to chill aside of my main. Since it's a "backup" game, I have no real objectives else than being lazy and enjoying. I do only what I like, based on mood of the moment. I do a few achievements I like (those of the type "treasure hunts"), but at snail speed, with no hurry to complete (grinding is banned from my vocabulary).

All in all, my situation with ESO is very comfortable and protects me from most issues we hear about. I'm close to never affected by what's happening around and my motivation to play remains intact.

Questing mainly. I play slowly, with limited time and multiple characters so I've still got a lot I want to do and I work through it as and when I have time.

I enjoy other things in the game too, like housing, doing activities with my guilds and sometimes some of the events (when it's not just grinding for loot) but it's the questing that mainly appeals to me and keeps me coming back. I've been a fan of TES games for years and got ESO hoping it would be the game that would eventually let me see all of Tamriel in one game.

There is just SO MUCH TO DO.... I love it.
I log in daily and scamper about doing whatever I fancy but in all I like to ride one of my mounts through the different lands just simply enjoying what it is. Nothing more.

I do admit I kind of miss the "tighter wraparound" countryside that makes Skyrim...that always feels like it wraps you up in its arms while you ride about... but ESO isnt SKyrim and travelling about I enjoy the architecture of the villages; the fact that I dont have to PvP or battle if I dont want to (unless Im ambushed by some angry critter) I also stop and speak to people passing by or people who stop to look at my armour or fashion style.

I always find it fascinating that I can walk down any street in any town anywhere in Tamriel and at that particular moment someone from the other side of the world can walk up to me and start talking through this amazingly dressed avatar and share words from their culture and land in this amazing imaginary land.
I find Tamriel hypnotically inspiring. Im an animation engineer anyway by profession irl but even so....

I dont think I can get bored with Tamriel.
    PvP will always be randomised.
People contact will always be unexpected and revelational.

It will be a sad day when ZoS stop adding tasks to the "everyday" lives of Tamrielian Avatars but having said that I am, after two years, only about 15% through the Tamriel experience despite almost 9000 hours playtime.

I am in no rush. I love it.

Seems like it's time to take a break. That's what I'm doing currently, and it feels great! When a game feels too much like work, and you have no innate motivation to play then it is time.

If you feel you cannot stop playing, and are not enjoying your gaming experience, then it's time make a deeper assessment.

I’ve had a love/hate struggle with TESO lately. Sometimes I really enjoy playing but most of the time I find the game to be pretty boring. I love new content but the story doesn’t draw you in enough or is long enough to really enjoy. The new game mode with the cards was ok but really just felt like a novelty that became too grindy. Sure, I’m in an active guild that’s always running things daily but after a while it all just feels repetitive. The whole game does.

So I’m asking what keeps you all motivated to keep playing? Is it because of the time and money you’ve invested? Is it because “what else am I going to do” mentality? Or because of your gaming friends?

When I log on to the character screen I sometimes just sit there looking at all 18 characters for a while and then just log back out. I’ve not seriously played for weeks.

When you start questioning why, or feel like it's becoming a job or a task. It's time to take a break and that's ok.

Recognizing that ESO should not be my only game, as it was for a long time
I skipped the Witch's Festival because I finally realized I don't care about collecting stuff
Building characters was fun, but after 25 L50 characters, I've had about enough of that
I have more gold than I'll ever spend, so not much incentive to continue a lot of crafting
I just finished the new DLC quest line
It was particularly fun for me because I just got a new PC with 2K 32-inch gaming monitor - what a difference that makes! The colors are amazing and the game loads and switches screens in seconds.
But I plan to play other games as well, delving into ESO for new adventures but no longer expecting it to meet all my needs

Right now I'm only logging on Tuesday and Friday to check the crownstore stuff and the weekend furniture guy. This month's calendar login rewards are meh so I only need to collect up to the 10k gold, anything after that is whatever. Once WoW Dragonflight launches, I'm likely not to show up again until New Life thing to collect stuff I missed then not again until the Anniversary event.

SWTOR, Star Trek Online and ESO, all had something out side of the game that made me a fan of their respective franchises before I even knew about their MMO's.

They each drew me in but ESO is the only one I have kept playing primarily because I like the way combat works over other MMO's that rely on cooldown based rotations or tab targeting.

I enjoyed the story in all 3 but felt ESO was the most single player friendly out of the 3, it does not shove group content down your throat to progress the story. That and I enjoy the combat system in ESO a lot more than other games with their cool down based rotations and tab targeting.

I have tried out other MMO's mostly buy to play ones that caught my interest, they all shut down.

None of the other big MMO's that are ESO's competition really interest me, I am not going to spend hundreds or thousands of hours in a game that has not drawn me in, in some way.

I play ESO as my only MMO and I play a lot of single player games when I want to do something different, for me ESO is just one source of entertainment for me its not my primary source, I read, I watch movies/TV/Anime I have other things I want to do, so I do them, when I feel like playing ESO I play it, I don't try to force it, even if I were to only play ESO an hour a day I would still feel as though I am getting my moneys worth for ESO plus.

Right now? Hardly anything. Will check out Galen once it hit's console. But in all honesty: With my Raid and my trifecta group having disbanded, there isn't much left to do right now. Overworld PvE is bland. It misses any form of challenge.

As for PvP? Well, it feels like being a mess for what seems like an eternity now. Balance. Performance. Active players. Nothing is where it feels right.

The "good" thing though: There is plenty of enjoyable games out there. So I check back now and then in ESO. Check back on the forums. Maybe the game will improve and I will return. Maybe it does not and I just won't? I assume the last, because ZOS seems to focus on getting as much money out of everyone for the least amount of effort they put into the game. This will not work for player retention. At least not for me.

Anyway, a slight glimpse in the future that just might come true:
We will see bleeding numbers with new lows on par with pre 2020 with February.
Option 1: we get a banger as an expansion pack next year and ESO will recover
Option 2: we do get another expansion with features no one asked for and the game with continue to ever so slowly bleed even more players.

If you asked me what the game needed to get me back? This is hard. I guess I want a "better" game? One more refined in regards to animations and combat feel? One with a bigger population? One with my friends back in it? One with less bugs, better performance? With less emphasis on selling you stuff via ingame shop and more earnable rewards?

I almost feel trapped into playing until Oct 1st, next year --- Steam says ZOS charged it twice, and ZOS insists that Steam sent it in twice .... but when I was re-subbing for 6 months, it went through twice --- fortunately, they are giving me the year, and not running both at the same time (thank you, for that)

But. I am going to be here for at least that long, as I already paid for it....
Am, VERY Much, hoping for some fixes -- the blocking bug is a bit rough, as I usually Tank/Heal with my small circle..... but it is making them step up some, as they are newer players than I am, so there is that.

I think the potential, even with the recent issues, is there for a great game ..... I can even see where U35 can get us there..... I do see that there is a path on it .... just hoping that the company is looking at the path, too.

Long breaks help me return eventually. When development and my personal preferences are not attuned, I go play other games. Eventually the game will improve again an then return for another season. This is not a complaint however. I find this true at every MMO. Only single player games engage me in a way I enjoy replayability. [I know that's not a word] Making new classes but going through the same material isn't the same to me.

    TL;DR:

Honestly? I'm not sure what keeps me logging in. At worst, I log in once a day for the log in bonus and endevours, at best I play for a couple hours doing whatever happens to be my fancy at the time. Changing my characters builds, getting achivements, (instantly regreattably) PvP'ing, even just running around a little for a Harvest run. I can't quite place the reason why I do though. I suppose a little is feeling the *need* to log in daily for the rewards and endevours, another I suppose could be the gameplay is so simple that it's easy to just switch my brain off and do a thing with a video on the site, or perhaps it's just the call of the ES world and my characters that keep me coming back.

Can't place it exactly, but I guess it's working.

Not much, I've gone from playing 4-5 hours a day to 2-3 hours a month.

It's all well documented across these forums why many vets like me feel like this.

My impression as a customer is that ZoS don't care about me or my motivation for playing.

@bmnoble mentioned combat, and that's one of the things I enjoy about ESO. As far as I know, there are no other TES games where you can have a prolonged fight with a boss the way you can in ESO. I've no experience with other MMORPGs, so I don't know how ESO's combat compares and contrasts to combat in other MMORPGs, but I think ESO's combat is fun.
I've fought mudcrabs more fearsome than me!
