ESO+ Spontaneously Ended Prematurely

I have two months left on my ESO+ subscription, but I logged in today to see it suddenly ended with no explanation. When I logged in to my eso.com account, there was a strange banner at the top that said "Welcome! Before we can continue, please select your subscription plan. It is required in order to play." "Subscription plan" is a link to https://account.elderscrollsonline.com/account/billing/change-subscription. I submitted a ticket, but you know how well that goes....
I hope that making subscriptions a requirement is not intentional. I am guessing that that is an old error message holdover from when subscriptions WERE required, and somehow my account got into a weird state.
