Just block cast while they are around. Simples.

I'd likely take em as nuisance but I tend to kill overland trash fast enough its not a bother. (Oakensoul ring seems to make my totally casual build rather quick against low health mobs.)

Horrid things. Up there with guava (can’t remember the name it’s those giant winged insects), zombies, and ice wraiths.

Hackwings are descended from the Cliffracer, an equally annoying flying animal. In the 3rd Elder Scrolls game they were everywhere, aggressive, and came at you from almost any angle. ESO has a few of them in Morrowind since the game takes place before St.Jib slaughtered them all.

I don't know why but I always had problems with cliffracers in Morrowind. I remember one particular quest where you had to find a doorway in the side of a lava channel, go inside ad talk to a mage. When I left there was a line of cliffracers flapping above me, at least six of them... kill one and the next would descend to take it's place.

It's been 20 years... I still have nightmares.
You needed some ranged firepower, easy solution was an ring with ranged fire damage on target then used.
Best part that that you could get impressive rate of fire with this as in how fast you clicked or many times a second letting you walk the fire onto them like shooting an machine gun with tracers. Damage cliffracer health + 1:)
Never had problems with them outside early in the game.

Now I had an mod with harder enemies, one who gave higher level cliffracers an ranged attacks. Still outgunned them.

It was very early on in the game, running entry-level mage's guild quests from Balmora, at level 5 or 6.

My "ranged firepower" was a basic bow :)

Hackwings are cousin of the cliff racer/strider and thus distant relatives of the bantam guar.

And as cousins of the bantam guar, I am obligated to like them... but maybe not as much.

Kotu gava - boy I hate those things.

Imo, the real problem with cliffracers was that they were everywhere, and they never, ever, gave up. Even at high level, fighting one was tedious, but outrunning them was impossible.

Kotu gavas are the worst. Guavas, otoh, are delicious.

[snip] It's not an exaggeration to say that 9 out of 10 enemies no matter if it's bosses or npc's do knockback/knockdown skills. There are no words to describe just how obnoxious and disruptive this effect is. It's gotten successively worse in every expansion since Morrowind. Bosses in non-dlc dungeons have the same mechanic too, where you can't block an attack and just get knocked down automatically.

It's the most obnoxious mechanic in the entire game and really frustrating. It sometimes takes several seconds to get back up and you'll get pummeled to hell during that time.

And don't get me started on npc's that cloak... I mean, seriously!? I feel so stupid standing there for 3 seconds, waiting for the npc to de-cloak. Seriously, I'm just standing there waiting for the cloak to go away! It's just a waste of time and simply frustrating mechanics.

    This, so very much

Also, the ones that just hit you through the golden block shield...... and the times when your character just pauses, despite you hitting buttons, and sometimes right in the middle of an animation, such as flurry of blows.... you hit once, and then pause and let the guy hit you, and then, suddenly finish the animation.
I tested it with ONLY hitting the button for that flurry ..... one swing, pause to make sure the enemy gets a few hits in, and then they let you finish the move.

Even more fun are the guys you have killed, cannot target anymore, and cannot execute skills... that stay up, get a full attack routine in on you, and then just fall over, dead.

It makes the game feel more and more like a pre-scripted story about the NPC's that you get to have a bit character in.... it takes away from the whole "you are the hero" thing, and just makes things tedious...... the other thing I have noticed is that as soon as you target a creature, even if outside of aggro range, with either a gap closer, or ranged weapon, and they are already, instantly, responding.

Hackwings are just like any other nuisance creature. They themselves aren't worth the time or effort to kill them but the chest or resource they're guarding might be.

Man the screech or a cliff racer would put shivers down my spine.
They would always come at some random angle when I was immersed in what I was doing.
