Here is an idea !!
What about developing a facility for grouping with your own Alt’s
We spend ages equipping. developing, arming, these charming little fellows. We end up using them as trashcan re-cyclers. Would be great if you could say take yourself and 3 of these, into a 4 man dungeon, and let them do their stuff to help you out.
The AI cannot be too difficult to extend, as its already in place for companions. ? well probably understated the technical complexity there, but, stay with this.
It would enhance the game a HUGE amount and give motive for developing these faithful alternatives?

It would totally destroy social grouping in the game if you could just group with yourself. Not going to happen.

Incidentally, each to his own but all my characters are individuals, not alts or "trash-can recyclers".

Wouldn't really work for me either. All my alts are identical to my main except for skill and mag/stam spec. Race, appearance, style of dress, even name (with the absolute minimal sneaky tweaks required). She changes her class as casually as she changes hairstyle or costume. Sounds odd, but the game does not allow her to do all she wants to do as one class and, more importantly, it has kept me from rage quitting when any particular class gets overnerfed in the endless circular firing squad of 'balancing'.

That said, I'd quite like to be able to make my own companion.

So would I. That would be the only way I'd use a companion. After reading stuff about all of them here, and considering the grind involved - I'm just not going there. I don't DO grinds any more.

Eh, mine too. Every one of my multitudinous alts (that's a LOT of them -over 70 now I think) is herself or himself. Altoholic? Of course..... always have been. Even in Skyrim and Oblivion (which I still play) I have profile managers so I can have lots of concurrent playthroughs.

One of the reason for companions to have inferior ai, different abilities from actual classes and different gear progression is for them to remain an inferior option to any other player and ease of balancing. Which all be destroyed by "alt companions ". I get it everyone wants to see their creations, preferably in helmets, with normal gear and actually meaningful skill setups as their companions but that's too unrealistic to expect knowing zos patterns and how they've been developing the game since launch.
