Surround Sound not working

Hello,
I am stumped. I have 5.1 set up and when I go to windows sounds to test it, all speakers are working, but in game only the front Left and Right speakers are outputting sound. I see that there are no options to configure surround sound in game so what do I need to do to make the game run in surround sound? I have windows 8 and there are two devices when I go to playback devices. One says speakers and its set as the default, when tested 5.1 works. The other says Digitial Audio (S/PDIF), I dont know what it is but it does not work when tested.
There is also a headphones option but it is disabled.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

DTruSoul ShrivenFor those who have the same problem.
First turn up the balance on your rear speakers, after I got them working they were very low so I couldnt hear them and I do not know exactly what I did to make them work.
All I did was enable my second digitial device and headphones then while running in a dungeon i heard people talking behind me.1
