Is it possible to make PvP more “real-time” or grounded in physics?

I may not be using the correct terminology here but I notice for example that when I am shot at with a spell or a bow, or if I am shooting, that if I see the shot and hide behind a pillar, it will go through the pillar and still damage me.

In FPS I like the aspect where walls help lessen the damage you receive from ranged weapons. I know ESO is not a FPS but I feel like the lack of real-time consequences makes the game less immersive and PvP less enjoyable.

There is no point in hiding behind things unless it is to evade. But once auto lock-locks on you, It would be nice to hide behind things because it will also lessen damage.

The same goes for a lot of physics-based situations in PvP, such as you see a ground AoE appear but jumping does not prevent damage. You have to be out of the circle to prevent damage but since it’s a ground AoE, it doesn’t make sense.

Its been so long ive just gotten use to it, when this game first came out, i couldnt get use to the weird auto aim bow shots and spells, i thought it was going to play like skyrim.

I'm a little confused. For one thing, you can totally line of sight attacks. Sometimes they hit anyway, and thats just random lag and positional desync, but if you do it enough its supremely effective. The lag and positional desync eventually swing in your favor and you're avoiding attacks you rightfully shouldn't. It goes both ways but trust me hiding behind things or running around things is an often abused art and very effective for fighting outnumbered.

As far as ground aoes go... I heard once that people who "bunny hop" around while they fight are exploiting because it does make you avoid damage ticks from ground aoes. I... Don't agree, but can't pretend to actually know. I can tell you that I bunny hop while fighting for 3 reasons. 1, I'm selecting a different potion but need to keep moving. 2, my fingers are capable of doing more than global cooldowns allow and I get bored easy. 3, I want you to see me jumping and think I'm sooooo cooooool. But anyway... Assuming you do NOT avoid damage by jumping... I think this is fair. Just because its a ground based aoe doesn't mean its part of the ground. Volley is arrows raining from the sky. Don't think jumping will help much. Razor caltrops? Yeah, sure, you can jump. Gonna hurt extra bad when you land though lol.

ESO combat is more 2D than 3D, and AoE's are actually bubbles instead of laying on the ground, which is how they continue to do stuff even after you jump.

Also ESO mimics an action combat system, but it is still using tab targeting like other MMOs of it's type. It is not like Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim where if you step out of the way of the projectile it'll miss because that projectile in the game code says it's coming for you. The only way to dodge projectiles is to actually use the ingame dodging mechanic which costs stamina then you'll see the projectile lose it's lock as if you fired flares or something.

To further go into how ESO has a soft version of tab targeting hit the Tab key (Or Press in the Right Joystick) while looking at an enemy and they'll highlight in white. Unless they step behind a wall and thus break line of sight no matter how many people stand inbetween you and them all your abilities and attacks will home in on that target as long as your target reticle is on them.

The fact ESO isn't a true tab target and forget MMO is a breath of fresh air, but I understand how it feels weird. If the devs wanted AoEs to be negated by jumping they'd have put a stamina cost on jumping, but that's not the case here.

That’s pretty insightful thankful. Does the tab targeting system help in MMOs because of group roles and how mobs are? Such as the tank needing to taunt multiple mobs or a healer needing to heal a particular player?

    Favorite Foods and Potions
    https://media.giphy.com/media/3otPoTggaYFNd1FdAI/giphy.gif
    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

Yes, and because back in the ye'old days of MMOs it was easier to program than full on projectiles, especially considering internet speeds, server calculations, and the like.

It also made it easier for players in those games that needed to focus fire something while dodging ground AoEs, sniping healers in PvP, and other stuff of that nature. With the targeting in ESO you can get a similar effect if you managed to target the thing you need taunted/killed. Like a pet Source in PvP using their pets to make it basically close to impossible to target them specifically you'd lock onto them as the primary target and hard counter that strategy.
