Oh, Mirri...

Mirri, equiped with resto staff and four heals, standing in stupid, slowly burning up: help, I need a healer! ☠️

Me standing in a little stupid that won't kill me.
Mirri: roll, roll if you can!

If you can't or just won't make companions more sensible around ground AEs then at least stop them giving advice that they don't follow themselves. I'm not a companion naysayer, I like them, but sometimes their limited abilities get on my nerves.

Like fast travelling together to my Mournhold inn room for the bazillionth time and Mirri going: this is the place I've been looking for! 🤦

Most companion healing abilities can't target themselves or prioritize a player. If you want Mirri to heal herself then have Life Siphon, Life Absorption, Crimson Font, and Twilight Mantle.

I just had someone's Healer Mirri in normal Graven. We had no dedicated Tank but she was doing just fine, until the Boss aggro'd onto her. She rolled away once, when it got within Melee but then proceeded to stand in place as it continued to her, one hit and she took a nap.

Spent maybe two or three soul gems on her that fight.

the AI is pretty much baseline, it can't run in a targetless direction to avoid damage because it has no clue about its envoirenment. It can only dodgeroll in a random direction, thats all.

Thanks for the advice but I already pick her abilities with great care. Standing in the fire circles of the first boss in Castle Thorn is a death sentence no matter what I give her because the boss will blow those up anyway. Been farming that dungeon during the event, she survived two or three times on that fight, out of over a dozen runs. On the final boss she has a 0% score. 😉

From what I understand they put in a cap of two dodge rolls per fight or something to avoid them rolling too far and resetting the fight. But boss fights in newer dungeons are all inside a room with closed doors so there is no benefit, just lower survival changes.

Are you getting aggro of fights? Even a soft-aggro by attacking first is enough for her to remain way in the back. However, if you can survive without her, a max level Bastian (otherwise he sucks) equipped with full Vigorous gear (otherwise he also sucks) might be a better alternative.

What I like for a squishy companion is to put her in 5 medium armor which allows her to use the skill Vanish. That skill causes her to disappear (and the boss to lose aggro) and heals her to full. Very good skill. Of course is she's still standing in a persistent red area, it may not be enough since it does have a cool down before she can use it again.

I can survive without her just fine, that's not the issue. In this particular fight mutliple patches of fire are placed by the boss. I think they are targeted so that each player gets at least one on top of them. All she would need to do is move but the programming is lacking. So she stands there healing herself from the DoT until the boss causes the patches to explode. But this is just one example, it's pretty much all fights with ground effects.
And no, I don't taunt, usually she can survive getting targeted by a boss just fine for a couple of moments, she is in heavy armor. It's the ground AEs that kill her.

The sad part of all of this is there are off the shelf AI's that Zenimax could use and if they used engines like Unity or UE5 they could have a very robust built in AI.

    It's frustrating....

just make companions immune to every existing AOE.

then they are still pretty useless, but die much less :D

I keep Mirri ranged (with some self heals) to improve her survival odds, but I still lose her on a regular basis. Speaking of AIs, what I'd really like to see is ESO's NPCs functioning under the advanced AI from that movie Free Guy. Just imagine the beauty: Bastian threatens to go to his mom whenever you craft with cheese, Mirri punches you after you accidentally harvest a torchbug, Isobel's teeth go rotten from eating all those sweets, Ember blows herself up trying to enchant something and all of them carefully avoid standing in stupid!

Someone mentioned giving companion a frost staff but not the staff ability with taunt. I have tried that and it seems to make companion artifical stupidity bit less severe. As like standing bit farther but not running away with the boss.

On my Mirri I use both the invisibility skills (her class one first, and then the medium armor one) - I haven't thoroughly tested it, but I believe their invisibility includes a damage immunity component against everything except channelled damage over time (e.g. dragon breath attacks).

With just the self-heals and the damage immunity from both invisibility skills I've watched her solo normal dungeon bosses like slimecraw without needing any help from me; not the most powerful companion build but the most independent one I've made.

Yeah but ZOS is way behind that curve, unfortunately.
They've already made their investments into the games infrastructure. Everything from here on out is just reskins and rehashes of the same stuff, with different palettes and arrangements.

If players (customers) want to see the latest and greatest, we'll be waiting for the next AAA MMO using Unreal 5.
