Nord stamDK viable in pvp and pve as dps?

I was thinking of doing 7 heavy with SnB on the front and DW on the back. Can an all melee DK do well against range/mage given the CC and chains?

You can build a very strong melee stam DK in PVP. Your PVE DPS is going to be garbage in 7 heavy, even worse with a S+B. Viable is a highly subjective term.

Simply put, PVP and PVE builds should be night and day different. If you try to build one for both, you will be bad at both.

Could pure melee DK fair well in pvp against rangers and magers?

    Could they? Yes.

If your frame of reference for "viable" is completing the content, then yes, assuming you build appropriately, they can be viable. Maybe not always optimal.

Viable? Yes, optimal? No, I would go with dark elf or khajiit.

You need "close gap" skill for fight with them. Fiery Grip morphs (DK), Flying Blade (DW), or Stampede (2H).
And don`t go 7 heavy pieces. If you want to go heavy, go min 1 medium and 6 can be heavy.
    PvP - Recruit.
    PvE - Dragon food
RPG - A guy who thought, that he can defeat daedric prince, yet guards still chase him off when he accidentally touches some object during daily writs.

Melee stam DK is OUTSTANDING for PvP. Gap closers are not necessary, but if that's your jam, there's nothing wrong with using them. Sustain can be a challenge, but I overcome that by running Serpent, Jewels of Misrule, and 2 medium pieces.

There are a lot of resources for good PvP stam DK builds out there that can be found with a simple search. However, there are also a lot of, let's say, suboptimal builds out there as well.

I mean, anyone is susceptible to a ranged burst attack, but DKs are generally melee characters in PVP and can be very strong in the right hands. You may want some sort of gap closer (Leap, chains, or something like Stamped from 2H), and of course, DKs really shine with pressure (DOTs) and locking down their appointments with CCs and Immobilizations. DKs dont particularly excel at their own mobility, but they are REALLY good at taking mobility away from others.

I play a lot of mag sorc in pvp, which is primarily ranged. DKs are one of my toughest encounters. I of course try to kill them from range, but DKs have tools to draw people into melee and keep them there. In other words, a ranged character kills your with burst, a class like DK, suffocates you with pressure (and maybe a burst at the right moment).

As others have said, you may want some medium armor mixed in there. And certainly, I suggest starting with a proven build and adapting it to your own playstyle. I am not an expert on Stam DK in PVP, but I have fought some really good ones over the years.

I see, so what about pve then? Is it even worth being a stamDK dps over a tank in pve? In fact, would DK be better at dps or tank? With dps, couldn’t a DK be effective for the same reason it is in pvp due to dot pressure?
