One of the best ways to lose items

I had several treasure maps from thieves' troves. I didn't bother to launder them; they're usable.
I search for the chests, so I'd looked for one for a long time over different days.
Recently, I found I had an old quest that needed me to break into someone's house, which I normally don't do. A guard saw me. Easy option - why not pay the bounty, I don't think I have any stolen goods to be confiscated. Today, I was back in the zone and finally think I found the treasure chest location. I go to look at the map.
I finally realized why it wasn't in my inventory. It's all too easy to forget stolen items you have if you pay bounty, and they can't be recovered.

The aggro range on guards seems to be hella weird though, sometimes you have to be right on top of them and sometimes they'll spot you from clear across the zone. ✭I just want the Internet speed that the guards seem to have --- I am a Ebonheart Pact and rob a house in they ENEMY territory of the Daggerfall Covenenat, and teleport home, to a guard waiting on me at the shrine...... seriously .... you can make WAR on the other faction, but don't steal from them, that's bad........

And if you don't want to launder it because it's a consumable item, make a point to use it as soon as you can.I've fought mudcrabs more fearsome than me!1 -

And I always check the drawers in the back of the hall with the last boss in Falchreach hold dungeon as I once got an rare plan there
