Do companions gain experience if they die during a fight?

I sometimes go to Dragonstar Arena with my companion to work on leveling them. If my companion dies in the middle of a round do they stop earning experience until they are ressed or do they get experience from my fighting?
I think they should continue to gain experience since they are still there and part of the group.
