How bad is ESO at teaching you the game?

When you need to find online guides like Alcast, Deltia, etc. That says a lot about how well the game teaches you anything.

This game is guilds and guides from content creators if you want to learn. And if the average player doesn't venture into either of those areas, which I suspect many don't, they will miss quite a bit about the game, and as a consequence, get bored much sooner probably not realizng there is so much more to the game. And even then, guides only focus on so much, and I don't think a lot of players even bother with guilds or if they do it is for specific things - porting around the map, need a trader....

My only gripe would be that it took me 10000+ hours to find this section. I don’t know if a new character gets any form of hint to look there for information but that I only found out about it now is telling in its own way, I guess.
I've mentioned this so many times, it's unreal. I'd wager the vast majority of players don't even know this exists in-game. It has a lot of information, but it's also lacking the more hands-on stuff. For abilities, it basically says "you can slot abilities" but doesn't say why you should even bother. Can I do more damage? Do I have heals? Will they help in some way? Who knows, work if out yourself.
Further on this, here it is in-game:

New player perspective: "I just went through the tutorial and I was told light attacks and heavy attacks deal damage. Is there any need to use abilities? Why would I bother when light and heavy attacks do fine?" This was genuinely me when I first started playing.

Moreover, they show Dragonknight abilities rather than dynamic icons for your class (when I first started playing, I started on Templar). So if you look at the tutorial, you're thinking "I don't see those abilities, those are not the abilities on my bar, how do I get those abilities and what do they do?" They also don't show anything else, such as weapon, armour, and guild skill lines and how to unlock them. The ability bar shown in the help section is also only an image, so you can't hover over the abilities to see what they do. Nor does it tell you about hovering over abilities to read the tooltip.

How I would write this one Help Page is something along the lines of this:
    kltpwrdct174.png

It's, quite frankly, bizarre how the Abilities help section gives you only the barest of information while the Status Effects section gives you a complete rundown of exactly what each status effect does and the percentage chances to apply. Similarly, the Removing Negative Effects section tells you how to remove effects with examples, "Templar Skill Purify and Alliance War Support skill Purge."

Why can't the Abilities section give a basic hint toward doing damage, healing, aggro, and applying buff/debuffs using abilties?

In fact, buffs are only mentioned in the following categories: Events (Jester, New Life, Witches) for experience buffs, Combat (Mundus Stones), and Synergies (Charged Lightning). Why couldn't it also mention class specific buffs which apply both to the player and their group? Why doesn't it touch on debuffs? It gives a passing mention to negative effects in two categories, but doesn't differentiate the difference between a snare and a hard CC. Why do you have a section which says "Remove Negative Effects" when most of the recent content has unpurgeable debuffs/DoTs? A new player looking at a negative effect, maybe a bleed, and spamming Purge; they're wondering why the effects are not getting removed.

The game contradicts itself in some of the sections, too, which isn't helpful. Likely due to some of the help sections simply being out of date. For example, Cleanse: "Removes all negative effects from the target." No, it doesn't. It removes those which ZOS allow to be removed, which isn't all by a long shot.

Don't even get me started on their standardisation process of standardising stuff and then leaving in exceptions and deliberate inconsistencies.

The "teaching," if any, is very passive. It is up to the player to learn on their own really or find a more experienced player. There is the "?" icon like the OP mentioned but how many actually read it. Who wants to sit down and read an unattractive and boring "book" on what this and that means in the game? There is a reason game manuals are so popular. They are full of art and engaging. They are written for gamers by gamers most of the time. Besides, I would prefer to read a lorebook in game than some digital instruction manual that doesn't tell me more than what observation and experience will tell me.

Part of the problem is kind of related to damage though.

Normal Dungeons would be where people learn the basics but, because things die so fast, you end up with groups not covering the roles, mechanics you never learn because they are either blown past or never fire, and you end up with expectations that can reduce player's interest and participation in content.

I'd planned on writing up a post on dungeon problems and what I thought might solve them but, the thing is, I'm not sure you really have the population to justify attempting to fix things.

This isn't like Battlegrounds where you could probably improve the experience a bit with a few little changes.

When I'm in Auridon and see and speak to new players via the Zone chat system I noticed a lot that beginners don't know where to start. And for sure when those people have bought DLC's... They accept every quest marker they see and go in every zone. 25 quests maximum is a too low number.

I like playing with new people, mostly it's more fun than those who're for years playing this game.
The help pages are pretty clear, but not everyone wants to read a whole book of information. They want to learn it by doing it

Just this morning I had some unpleasant experiences with world bosses when playing with other high CP players. One was at Serpent Caller in High Isle. The other player ignored the adds, which can one shot you from a distance, so I was constantly fighting the shades and bashing them to interrupt and losing stamina as a stamina player. Since the other player was somehow surviving and continuing to dps the boss, the shades were respawning instantly.

The other was at the Mantikora boss in the Deadlands. One player was constantly running from the boss and dragging him around the whole circle. Impossible to use aoes effectively.

Ignoring the mechanics makes it more difficult for everybody.
