I don’t mind their damage for combat pet, but their survivability is garbage. They absolutely useless on bosses who cast aoe or dots and dying almost instantly. Just to give an example, meridian guardian boss in southern elsweir, one of the easiest dlc boss to solo, yet the moment he cast rotating wall of light companion die. Doesn’t even matter if it’s fully leveled tank in purple heavy armor or damage dealer in medium. They should have balanced them in same manner as sorcerer or warden pets with decent mitigation to avoid such situations. Dead companion = useless.

This is the only problem I found with Bastian's tanking. He normally survives very well but if there is something like a cloud of poison he doesn't move out of it and dies, even though he tells me to get out of that.

When I'm in the middle of combat alone, hit that lag wall where I'm unable to take any actions for 10 seconds then 999+ latency and still be alive with all the mobs are either occupied or dead around me because of my companion, all is well.

Companions are, at this point, merely a distraction bait for some World Bosses. They survive for some seconds while we use that time to lower WBs resistance. Beyond that, companions are basically useless.

The dialogs are poor and repetitive, our "relationship" doesn't have any interesting improvement in dialog and rich interaction. It's like ZOS paid voice actors to do a very menial job.

Companions need a strong improvement, imho.

I've played with them all extensively and find them to be quite good, better than many players i've encountered but... They do have some mechanical issues avoiding things and some block issues as well! like on dragons they just dont block or even try to block the big chomp that does little damage to a real tank but 80k+ dmg to companion even in heavy.

For the most part I find the healing quite powerful, dps is not too bad either and bastion/iso tanking 97% of the time is rock solid. You cant really complain about that as I dont think they are meant to replace players just assist. I would like to see the blocking on dragons though!!

My opinion is that overland was already a complete cakewalk before, and now a farce.

The fact they couldn’t work out how to get them to move out of bad with the resources available to them without putting them into the wall or other clipping things is about like weaving, to me. An unintended feature. For those that really need the help in overland or normal base dungeons, it is there, but not as good as a player.

And though reached by a clumsy, circuitous route - that is actually pretty well ideal.

-edit, and to add, my opinion also is that companions should simply never replace a player in veteran content, or even normal DLC dungeons. If they can be a help in normal basegame dungeons that is a solid peak for their usefulness.

Well i think server side processing could be a factor as well.. Lets be honest they are basically doubling the population and unlike players who chose theyre own actions, the companions have to be processed on theyre side to so I think its mostly basic scripting for different events which is for the most part ok. One day well be able to transfer our consiousness into them but for now this is what we got =p

Well when released in testing they did get out of bad. Into walls and rocks and other things, before they gave up on that algorithm to be able to get through last expansions launch without an ongoing debacle. And it hasn’t been substantively changed in a hear, even through another expansion. So I don’t think it is a problem with computation bandwidth but with in house AI development capability. But *shrug.

I mean development of a card game costs dev time/budget, and someone made a decision that a card game would have more ROI than more responsive companions. Just is what it is.

The game is balanced for not having companions and cannot be done otherwise since many lack access to them. As such there is no reason to buff them outside of increasing their survival.

The issue with avoiding ground AEs or insta kill walls is that companions will be quite binary: they move out of the way or they don't. If the will always flawlessly move out of the way then they will be beter than most players who can get distracted, etc.

Most normal DLC dungeons, bar some mechanics, can be soloed. So the companion can just tag along for a little extra damage or (de)buffing. They won't enable anything that otherwise can't be done. Gonna have to check if they can/will interrupt bosses like Ibomez the Flesh Sculptur, though I could ride out that damage with the proper equipment before companions were even on the horizon.

So far I am satisfied, they could be a little more robust though in worldboss fights.

But already now Mirri is able to solo a basegame worldboss, the dreugh queen in the center of Stormhaven.

I just have to block now and then when Mirri becomes invisible to heal herself, apart from that I don't engage in combat.

Problem is, you need a kind of "Meta" setup for this, everything else is useless.
Heavy armore with increased health or healing/reduced damage, you also can use 3-4 pieces for increased ultimate generation.
Quality is less important, blue gear will do the job.
Weapon is restauration staff, she still can do some damage with it, but relies on the heals from it.

Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

Having played EQ for a fair bit, I don't think they want to be accused of stealing ideas from other games :D

Companions do essentially lower the difficulty of the game so long as they survive an encounter. I don't want them to be as good as a mediocre player- I feel they are fine as is. They help my tanky chars with killing bulky mobs when i'm solo and make quest grinding more bearable without cheapening the encounters.

I do however think that players relying on them to tank or heal is ridiculous and they shouldn't even have the ability to do either. just my 2c.

I'm fine with the 'power' of companions per se but they do a bit of tweaking in combat. I like all four companions as tanks and each does a good job in their own way as long as your character can provide a bit of occasional healing to them. They also work well for me as ice staff (only) ranged dps. Therein lies the problem - I won't give a companion any ranged weapon but ice staff since they dodgeroll excessively (resetting bosses and spreading out fights) with any other ranged weapon. With an ice staff, they block/bash/mitigate just fine. I'd really like to see this significant limitation fixed. If a companion is going to dodgeroll, they should roll TOWARD the player, not away from the threat. And the frequency of using dodgeroll should be reduced.

If more detailed settingth and management of their combat is possible to make it would be good.

My tank Bastian survives the normal base game dungeons (don’t know about WS2 and FG2), only one vet base game, BC1, and maybe one or two of the easier DLC normals like FH (but needs healing). His survivability is much better at range. I found a purple restoration staff, equipped it on him, and it’s fine. I love not having to worry if he’s dead yet. So much more peaceful.

I’d prefer it if he could tank and not die on harder content though. Or if companions died, they should be able to auto-resurrect with a soul gem after 5 seconds.

This! They will interrupt, but not pin mechanics! They're also keen on telling us to get out of the way, but they won't do that themselves.

Also, there's no reason why they should be completely incapacitated when an NPC casts Silence.

    Yes, everything is fine
I don't use them in combat so I would like to see a different option to put them to chores I don't want to do.

lol what does that even mean? theyre combat companions!! Thats like saying you dont use toilet paper to wipe your butt instead are interested in ways to use it as wallpaper? lol

I would like to slightly increase them
I'd like for the base companions to be slightly weaker, and for the effect of armor and weapons to be slightly higher.

Getting a new piece of armor for my companions is exciting, given how rare they are. But I can barely notice the difference when I equip it.

    Yes, everything is fine
Slightly increasing their damage would be fine, but I don't want them to play my game for me. Increasing their survivability and increasing the damage they do are two different things, though.

    Yes, everything is fine
I have Bastion set up as a fire mage and he pulls mobs from me. He just kills everything. I even just sit back and watch him take on a delve boss to half health then I jump in before he gets too low on health. And he is only level 9 now. I wonder if ZOS meant it to be like this.

    Companions need significant buffing
I find them quite reasonable for tanking.

They are abysmal for dps and could use major improvements.

I'd like to see them a bit better for utility and buffs if it's thought that the dps can't be increased.

Healing in theory is fine, but the fact that they constantly roll and move back with any ranged weapon, including resto staff makes that a complete non starter for me. I can't see myself using any ranged weapon with the current AI.

Personally, I think their DPS is fine. I don't want to be reliant on them.

But tanking companions need some seeeeeeeeeeerious attention.
