I know bookcases are randomly loaded with books. So getting a skill line bump is random on every bookcase.
Problem is no matter how many times I've gone back to the bookcases, and I check them every opportunity, I have yet to get a skill line bump out of any bookcase. Anyone else notice this?

I don't do bookcases in new content. The best bookcases are in the College in Auridon, the Manor House in Auridon, and most other base game early zones.

I've got 5-6 skill line bumps from just those two - Auridon College and the Manor House. YMMV of course, anecdotal is what it is.

    I don't think that's true.
It has been my experience that the bookcases which grant a skill bump are at fixed locations, and grant a skill point at the very least the first time you discover them.
(I can't recall ever revisiting one with the same character, but I would assume you wouldn't be granted repeated bumps with subsequent visits to that bookcase by the same character).

i.e., Whenever I've found a skill-bump bookcase with one character, I can go back to that same bookcase with a different character that hasn't accessed it before and it will grant a point.
And if I'm running with my girlfriend and one of us finds a bookcase with a skill bump, we alert the other, and it grants the point to both of us; it isn't randomized like another container might be (other than chests and Thieves Troves, we always get different items when we loot the same containers; barrels, crates, sacks, etc.).

Yes, bookshelves draw from preassigned pools. It is possible that there are no skill books in those pools.

I don't believe this is true, bookcases are often linked to the place/circumstances in which you find them (or so it seems to me).

Again, I don't believe this is true. I'm happy if someone can put me right, because I don't revisit bookcases, but it seems to me that the content of bookcases are fixed.

In any case, I read the books, if I get a boost then it's a bonus. If I don't then there's often some worthwhile information in the books that applies to where you are and what you're trying to do.

Unless you get "Lusty Argonian"... ;)

I don't recall ever getting any skill increases from books in DLC zones, I could be wrong... I only recall getting them from original game zones. Even then, sometimes it's hit or miss.

Most bookcases are fixed. That also means you get the skill to 48 then go visit books for the last boost where it's worth more. Some other good spots for books are dungeons - Volenfell has a bunch as does Crypt of Hearts.

And they work in other zones. They do NOT work at all in High Isles.

Folks, been playing since the day Summerset came out, both PC and PS. Books are rotated in bookcases. If you will go to the same bookcase every day for a month you will see this. The eudetic lore books that award skill points will change in book cases, so you can in fact get multiple skill points over time out of the same one.
And yes, points are awarded in DLC's as well as basic game zones. New books are also available in DLCs, both Mage Guild and eidetic, since eidetic are basically just for lore. You get old books and new.
