Nobody knows, there is no lore added for them on Uesp yet, and I can't remember finding any lore books about them.

Seems they were added without any attempt at explaining them.

Fauns appear to just be personifications of the wild old magic that druids play with.
You could THEORISE that they're related to a variation of Hircine, what with the deer heads and feet, and the shamanistic magic they and Bretons around them (druids, wyrd, and reach witches) all use.

We've yet to see Centaurs, Imga, all the other monster critters from Arena and Daggerfall. They've just up and vanished and I guess will reappear in time for those games and leave again just as quickly.
Its simple. If they're not needed for a story aspect, and they can't be retconned into always being there, then they're on an island far away that also hasn't been mentioned in the lore before it was introduced.

Lore isn't set in stone, it's malleable.

Fauns seem to be one of the many fey creatures that have existed in High Rock ever since the first TES games. Many of those are mysterious and are said to be seldom seen or live deep within the oldest forests, which is of course a convenient gameplay excuse but hey. I haven't seen the faun named before, but I distinctly remember reading a passage in one of the Daggerfall era books or quest where I was like "hey that sounds like a faun", so I was very positively surprised to see them in High Isle. The same goes for Indriks, when they first came out in Summerset I hoped they'd add them to High Rock eventually as they had such a fey creature vibe to me, and here we are. Speaking of which, I love how the island near one of the faun areas is called Feywatch.

I disagree entirely on the Hircine reference though. Not everything with antlers is connected to Hircine, antlers are a common theme with nature/forest related stuff throughout the setting, and fantasy in general.

Besides, daedra are vastly overrated. :D

Hang on I know I saw a lorebook on the wiki…*digs*

Here we go @TheNuminous1 , A Hunter's Journey VI: Fauns. Still rather scanty unfortunately.

I don’t suppose our new Loremaster is summonable, is he? @ZOS_Michael…nope Mr. Zenke does not have a tag. :/

Aside from that book, which some players have known about since High Isle was put on the PTS, there's some dialogue about them in a world boss quest:

"Fauns are... fickle. They're protectors of nature, but usually aren't vicious. Wise hunters steer clear of their lands, but Wildhorn is more aggressive than most.
Be careful. A faun lord can turn the forest itself against intruders"

"The faun lord commands the forest spirits - spriggans answered Wildhorn's call."

So they have a similar role to spriggans. That faun lord also summons "Indrik spirits" apparently, another often hostile "protector of nature". The implication is that they have something to do with Jephre.

A bit surprised they were added, which we have not heard of before. But no sight of centaurs and satyrs which has either made an appearance or been mentioned in TES before. Satyrs are said to be in Valenwood, though, not High Rock or anywhere near there. Wonder if they and faun look similar.
[Lie] Of course! I don't even worship Daedra!

A few sketchy lines of lore. Some more generic, kill-on-sight mobs. [snip]

I kind of wish they hadn't bothered.

I find it interesting that fauns seem to carry garlic necklaces. Now garlic doesn't fend off vampires of werewolves in the Elder Scrolls universe, but it does seem like it could be meant to convey something to us as an audience who do associate garlic with these things. So perhaps the Fauns actually oppose Hircine and the Daedra, which would make it all the more interesting that Hircine appears in a similar shape as these Fauns. This would also be in line with the suggested connection to Jephre.
(It could also have no greater meaning as ZOS simply reused assets and built Fauns from Hircine's model.)
This Bosmer was tortured to death. There is nothing left to be done.

It's pretty much what we had about spriggans for half of the franchise.

If anything, High Isle doesn't have enough new creatures.

We actually also had some tidbits about fauns in the latest Loremaster's archives.
Fauns, meanwhile, are local to the Systres. They fill an ecological niche similar to Goblins back on mainland Tamriel and are about as charming and welcoming as those famously murderous and ill-tempered beings. Just why the Fauns reject other cultures with such violence is hard to say. But just as study into Goblin culture has been in fits and starts because of a propensity for the subjects to kill the researchers, an understanding of Faun dialect and tradition is sadly lacking.

How does something get edited for "minor bashing" what does that even mean? I didn't realize there were different degrees of bashing.
