Unlock Gender Locked Customisation Options

Let me first start by saying that I love how much we are able to customise our characters in ESO. Its wonderful how many different outfits, hairstyles, adornments, body markings, etc etc there are to decorate and dress up our characters with! However some of these options have certain limits. The big one being unable to equip a hairstyle, adornment, etc if you are a male or female character. The other being unable to equip certain body/face markings and facial hair depending on race (this I am more forgiving with, but I still think there should be a few exceptions).

A lot of the customisations in collections that are locked from equipping, are pretty old in terms of game age, and I think have been forgotten about and been overlooked. They are parts of various crown style parlour packs. More modern style packs, and appearance collections from crown crates or monthly rewards are never gender or even race locked. If I may provide an example:

h180ptzihtxd.png
This is my Male Altmer. He is wearing Barbaric Windblown hair, Eye-Briar gemmed tattoo, Dark Emphasis Eyelashes, Cherry Blossom Anadem, Dangling Triple chain Earrings (not that you can see them), Bardic Tavern Singer's Dress, and Thorns of Ecstasy Body Markings. As you can see he looks pretty female (this is my drag outfit...), so if I can dress him up like this, why am I not allowed "Crimson Begonia" or "Imperial Moonstones"? My hair cannot be in braids or pigtails? I cant put on pearl earrings?

I'm not saying I want these things unlocked just so people can dress up their characters as the opposite gender. Some of these hairs, adornments, etc work perfectly fine with a traditionally male look. My Male Mage might want to wear ear rune earrings and a scholar's half circlet! Considering that all modern collection items are allowed to be worn by either gender, I don't see why the old ones should still be kept locked away. I can't actually speak for stuff thats locked for female characters, as I have only ever played as my male Altmer (playing since 2016 and still on 1 character haha), but I'm sure there are male only adornments, hairs, etc that female characters would like! Might I also remind you that we are in Pride Month at the moment, so this would be a nice gesture on your part...

In terms of race locked customisation options, things are a little more complicated. But certain things, like Khajiit feline body markings, I feel could easily be translated as normal tattoos on Men and Mer. Similar to how one may wear a leopard print dress, one might also have a leopard print tattoo, or tiger stipe tattoos. Bring out your love of cats in your Man/Mer! As for Argonian scales, I am less sure on how that would work... But I have confidence it could be translated into a tattoo in some way or another. In facial hair, there are various horn types that can only be worn by Wood Elves or Argonians. It would be nice to be able to wear these as any race (though not a deal breaker) as it could be explained lore wise as them being prosthetics, Magical growths, or Appearance illusion magic! Considering we have skins that give us scales or turn us into Ice, and Polymorphs that turn is into Daedra or goblins, I don't think asking for this is really that much of a stretch to ask for.

I think its bad value for money when you buy these packs especially on the crown store, and you can only access half of what you paid for!

(I also think we should be able to put Major (and maybe Minor) adornments on our companions. I understand not wanting to cover their head, and so certain adornments would have to be exempt like the grave elegance mask, wire cage half mask, and belly dancer veil to name a few. But Earrings and circlets should really be allowed! I may make a more detailed forum post on this however.)

Thank you for listening to my whiny rant

I wholeheartedly agree and I know some people who also mention this from time-to-time. The horns bit is a bit iffy for me because of how important it is to Argonian and Bosmer identity but I wanted to note that there is a contraband item that backs this up. It’s called “assortment of cosmetic horns” and it includes a detail about using beetle glue as spirit gum.

This one had to break the heart of an male orc in an wedding dress telling that he could not get the title clanmother :)
And remember that dress, it was an free login reward. Very much like an Viking dress, perfect for Nord ladies.

Don't see the point of restricting hairstyles or jewelry then clothing is not restricted.
Had they said that clear dresses are female only but robes are unisex it wold make more sense.
Not starting the discussion about breast for obvious reasons

Races as in Khajit and Argonians is limited because heads are different so many styles will not fit also Argonians don't have real hair as the other have, Khajiit has some hair styles who clip horible but you can use ear hear to cover this up :)
There is some other restrictions like Altmer can not have black hair and some Redguard restrictions but don't play humans because boooroing.

Provoke how? With a flower in hair? There are way "girlier" or "manlier" adornments you can use to "provoke" so why not just being able to use all that i think is the point.

I would love to see the gender - or even the race - lock removed from all cosmetic items. Why, in 2022, can I not customize my character the way *I* want? Especially since we tend to *pay* for those customizations in one way or another. So if I own it, I should be able to use it - no matter what character.

Sammy fully agrees. It feels quite arbitrary whereas if they unlock the styles, more players will be buying the stuff so it makes business sense to do so.

We should all just stop playing the game, because who knows what tiny thing might "provoke" someone all of a sudden. You can already dress the characters all kinds of ridiculous ways. How would the removal of a few arbitrary restrictions be used to provoke anyone exactly?

Great post and great points have been made already. This would only be of advantage to all of us. Whether you want a drag character, a "manly" character with an earring, a character who is cosplaying another race... Things like hairstyles especially. Some of them would look amazing on characters of the opposite gender.

It's not that they've been forgotten about, when the topic came up previously ZOS have explained that they made a deliberate decision that all cosmetics made after a certain point would be available to both genders, but older ones would not be updated.

I'm not sure why though. It's certainly not any concern about keeping gendered dress styles, because a lot of the things which are already available to both would typically be considered male or female (dresses being one obvious example, but also things like long and ornate earings, various hair styles, lipstick and other makeup and so on).

Some are already available as both genders, but you dont get to choose which you want to wear like the bakers outfit. My female baker would much prefer the trousers but it isnt an option for her

Anyway I am all for all hair styles and other types things being made more available for different characters.

I wonder if certain hairstyles etc. wouldn't fit well on the other gender. Female hair may be too small for a male head for example.

Yes please, I think it is silly that there are things only for “male” and only for “female” characters. The beard not being available for female characters is one of the many things I dislike about ESO’s “play the way you want,” mantra.

It's curious that the subject is joked about, ie: Nord males in Solitude: "I can't remember her name.... the pretty one, with the beard", but there's no room for it in character creation/modification.

The thing is: Male characters can already wear dresses, "girly" makeup and false lashes. Most newer costumes and adornments aren't genderlocked. How would anything get worse if there's just more of them?

That's a good point, I tend to forget about facial hair because I only have 2 characters that use it (incidentally one is female - the khajiit ear tufts are classed as facial hair) and I almost never change it.

Yeah that one is still, mostly, gendered with a few exceptions, and the eye effects which shouldn't really be in there at all but lack their own category.

Almost all old cosmetics are gender locked while new ones are not. Only big exceptions to this has been beards where even a newly made one Old Salt’s Chin-Trinket was genderlocked (The squid beard is old)

This is probably because they would need to do a lot of adjustments to make all the base game hairstyles etc fit both male and female characters, which are not identical. It was made quite clear with the Short Mussed Waves hairstyle, which is an old one that wasn't released for years since its appearance on PTS and then on npcs throughout the years. Back on the PTS it fit badly on female characters and this was not changed when it was finally released. It still fits badly on female characters with no sight of being fixed by ZOS.

So, removing genderlock on old cosmetics will likely require a lot of adjustments to make them fit, but it would be nice. Some of the adornments and hairstyles being locked to one doesn't make any sense. Like why can't female khajiit have the same earrings the male khajjit can. Or why are some pony tails for male characters and others for female.

I think you were being nice when you referenced the manifold character customization options. I have long thought this aspect of the game to be quite poor. I would like to see more/better hairstyle, eyebrow, make up, jewelry and tattoo options just for example. The was done by modders in Skyrim. Zen should look at their work.

The limited selection is pretty obvious when you see the striking similarity of characters running about in the game.

Those kind of additions might be an alternative to what you suggest and actually go some way to helping you get the character you are looking for.

There's really no reason not to do this.

That depends if the item in question has all the correct graphics, meshes and interactions when applied to that body model. The same is true for many of the items that only attack to certain races.

That they did it again with a new item is disappointing but maybe their renderer actually only knows how to attach beards to male toons, so it's a bit more challenging.
