Zone Chat During Pride Month

    Hey, Incursion;

In this case, RL just happens to be who someone is and is in line with the TOS. Being hateful and toxic is against the TOS. Being who you are, so long as you are not being hateful, should not equate "inviting" or "deserving" trolling or hatred.

The people being toxic are ones triggered easily, by the mildest of things which are not hateful or toxic to them or anyone else.

A person should be able to say "I'm gay," without it being a big deal. Their doing so is not hateful, and has no impact on anyone else. This is no different to how a woman should be able to walk along a sidewalk and not be harassed because she's female. Her walking doesn't "open herself up to trolling," and neither should someone's orientation.

Btw, there is a museum dedicated to assault victims in the USA. It displays what the victims were wearing at the time of the attack. ...for example, turtle necks, cardigans.

Toxics trigger easily. They're not good, or decent, people.

We don't know exactly what happened

I've said repeatedly what happened. Because there's no way a bunch of hateful bigots flipped over four letters.

Well? Newsflash! They did! This is what made zone spiral into a full blown cesspool calling me and my guild child groomers.

    Here's my ad:

is recruiting! We're a laid back, LGBT+ led and friendly social/PvE guild and we always need more friendly adventurers! Catch some fish, clear a dungeon, or just hang out. No worries in the Filth. Only reqs: 21+, be excellent to each other. /w me or apply! (no empty apps)(Happy Pride Month <3)

The Happy pride is what triggered the reaction in zone chat. People started leaping on us calling us groomers and saying Pride was about turning children gay.

I'm not going to go in here and reply comment by comment so here's a sweeping statement for everyone who think we have no right to exist in ESO and be open and proud about ourselves:

We're here. We're LGBT+. We're not going anywhere. You will not silence us.

If you don't like us in your video game, find another one.

Almost forgot, thanks again for all the support. Too many people to reply to individually, but you're all amazing and I appreciate you.

Every time I check this post and see more and more support from the community and the people explaining why awareness and Pride are important, it makes my soul light up.

Thank you again to everyone being awesome.

    Very, very well put.

I think people refuse to understand this thought because then it takes away their only justification for treating us like garbage.

As long as they can frame us as doing something "wrong" then we "deserve" it.

Way back in the day there used to be game masters around who helped with moderation, but it hasn't been the case for years. I don't know why this practice stopped, maybe they don't have the people/time to do it, but it's a shame. The next best thing is just to screenshot and report, and hope ZOS takes swift action. Some zone chats are so terrible, I almost always turn it off when I go to Auridon for example, I can imagine it being extra bad this month.

That's why I'm trying to raise some amount of awareness within the community that this kind of attitude is alive and well.

I mean, look a few comments up, these people are so bold someone admitted they would harass LGBT+ people ingame if they saw them talking about Pride.

    I mean.. come on.

This is why I made the post, and people keep proving my point for me.

This has thoroughly ran it's course and I'm completely exhausted from having to defend myself and my community from bigots, bad faith arguments, and everything else this thread has stirred up.

I've asked the mods to lock it.

So if it gets locked, mods didn't do it to shut down conversation, they did it because I believe this is no longer productive (because people keep hijacking and derailing the conversation) and asked them to lock it.

Thanks again everyone who was supportive and awesome!

Tbh. Zone chat can & will be toxic. Topic does not matter here. There (unfortunately) exist people that um... hate & like to troll. This should not be happening by any means, but I guess is kinda unavoidable. Ever been to Shadowfen or Vardenfell or Murkmire zones ? What often happens in those zones is that there are various (I assume trolls) who from the lack of better term "provoke" discussions (or rather quarrels) about slavery & racism - and of course it is disguised as "in-game role play".

I guess there is no way of avoiding stuff like this. If I for example say in zone chat: "Merry Christmas everyone !" - from my perspective, I mean well for everyone & chance are I will not "trigger" anyone. But in reality, there might exist one person out there who will find that very offensive for them & they will feel kinda um "attacked". And thus the chat quarrel start...

And I guess the more "political" topic gets, it is way, way easier to trigger people. Especially if some one will be very obnoxious about it & will kinda want it to be a "main zone chat topic". Because well, I guess it is kinda obvious, but for the most part there are a lot of things going on in the zone chat. Multiple discussions at once. It kinda similar to a car CB radio (remember those ?). The is this informal agreement that main cb chanel is for the most important traffic information, and not for the ones favourite colour.

Anyway, best way imho if something like this happens is to stay mature & act like a grown man & basically - ignore the troll(s).

People started leaping on us calling us groomers and saying Pride was about turning children gay.

Some people reading about this might think the problem is that somebody said something offensive. They did and that's bad. But it's more than that. The notion that talking about LGBT+ matters is a form of "grooming" children has been repeated a lot recently, on the internet and by in-person protestors. I don't know if it's been in much print media, radio or TV. Some people might say it because they like causing offence or they fancy themselves daring bad boys for defying political correctness. But others appear to earnest believe it. There are places in both USA and Europe where there are laws designed in response to it. And when "the children" are at stake, people lose it.

The homophobic playbase of ESO isn't going to be solely responsible for this spilling into the real world and we can't stop it just by moderating ESO, but we can call it out in this one piece of the internet.

Comments like this almost make me regret asking for this thread to be closed.

But I'm so exhausted from the other types of comments I just can't keep coming back to this, but I feel obligated too because I started this conversation.

Thank you for being supportive and thank you for pointing that while we can't solve it completely, we can make a stand and call it out where we can.

    [snip]

I'm sure there's games where bringing one's sexual orientation into the arena is quite out of context, but ESO is quite open about all sorts of relations being perfectly acceptable, and there's even a mechanic to participate as player. The level of explicitness may be a thing players should keep in mind, but that doesn't depend on whether you're a straight, gay or whatever. I think we may expect of players not to have double standards on that count.
