I am curious how much overlap there is in the playerbases of ESO and Dungeons and Dragons. These games have similar roots and RP elements. ESO even collaborated with Critical Role recently.

Please let me know your thoughts below. The assumption is that everyone voting on this board has some interest/experience with ESO, so I'm asking about DnD.

Also, if you have played DnD (or another table-top RP game) set in the Elder Scrolls world, I would love to hear about your experience. If you have tied your DnD game into your ESO experience, share that in the comments as well.

(I actually play a Tabaxi bard with a Khajiit accent who looks a lot like my ESO main.)

I played D&D/AD&D beginning in the mid 70s (tabletop of course). I was the DM for my daughter and her friends from junior high. We had a lot of fun until about mid high school - when they all got too busy trying to sort out graduating with honors and which college to go to.

After that, I played computer versions of Ed Greenwood's Forgotten Realms - the SSI Gold Box series. As time went on, I discovered TES I Arena when it released, then the other TES games as they released - along with many more forgettable games.

I still play Oblivion and Skyrim alongside ESO. I'm hoping I'll still be alive when TES VI releases.... and that it won't be something I can't deal with (like VR - I have massive vertigo, can't do VR.... ew....)

I haven't really been into the online D&D stuff - too invested in TES/ESO.

I played DND in discord for a few sessions. I don’t have a non-elder scrolls table top experience to compare against, but we found some online resources to help set up the whole thing quickly in an elder scrolls setting. There was a map put together by the DM with icons that could be moved around. It was lots of fun since everyone was really into their character, but sadly it was cut short due to school schedules

There was another time inside ESO the game, through a thief RP guild who’s scoundrel characters made up other characters for a game hosted by their boss. Like RP-ception, sort of a team building exercise for a bunch of ill mannered elves that was chaotic and hilarious. Both times were set in the elder scrolls universe, I’d do it again if given the opportunity.

I played Baldur's Gate without the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion. Started to play Baldur's Gate II but never made it very far (some of the "exploits" I used in BG were not present in BG2). Fully played through both Icewind Dale games including their expansions. Had a good run with Neverwinter Nights (single player game) but never reached the end. Read every Forgotten Realms book I could get my hands on in the library. I even dabbled with the Neverwinter Nights MMO (about 130 hours).

The turn based aspect is difficult to get used to for me as well as dictating the actions of six party members. I am glad that the Infinity Engine games played in real time with an option to pause and AI scripts could be used on all the characters.

Dipped my toe into Morrowind during this time and had some fun playing it. But didn't revisit The Elder Scrolls until about a year after Skyrim came out at which point I had already gotten burned out on the Infinity Engine stuff and gave up on the Neverwinter Nights MMO. And now I'm burnt out on Skyrim itself but not yet The Elder Scrolls Universe.

My go to character tended to be a multi-class fighter mage thief. I liked to call it, "a bard that could not sing". Primarily due to getting access to much of the same things.

I might be tempted to play a DnD game if the dialog were to be fully voiced like ESO. It gets annoying when NPCs have a one liner that doesn't even match the tone of the displayed paragraph of text. But then I think about all the numbers, stats and dice rolls. That stuff is annoying. I want to have fun when I play, the <calculus, algebra, insert whatever math you wish> can stay out of it.

Come to think of it, that is why I'm still classed as a "casual" in ESO. I can work on maintaining rotation and avoiding damage to improve my boss fights but figuring out how to min-max to the fullest is so not fun for me.

I've never been into D&D and I'm not interested to give it a try. My first "MMO" experience wasn't a real MMO. It was with Uru on line, when Ubisoft created a shared server for the Myst community.
From there, a while later, our group of friends jumped into Guild Wars (the original) when it came out. We so loved it that we became deeply involved into that game, with no time left for anything else. When GW2 came out years later, we all jumped together into it and loved it too. We still all play both now.

It's only recently, searching for a "back up" game to chill solo aside of GW2, that friends took me to ESO.

I have experience and interest in playing DnD.
I got interested in D&D shortly after I started playing ESO (having been watching Critical Role for a while), and the first D&D character I ever created (a high elf wizard) was an adaptation of the character concept I made up for my Altmer magsorc. At the time I wasn't sure if I'd ever actually play D&D with a group, but I found a local game store that hosted games and I've been playing regularly ever since (online via Discord since the pandemic started). I ended up playing that wizard in a Curse of Strahd campaign that ended recently, and she was a great fit for that.

Since my schedule doesn't leave room for theatre anymore, D&D is basically my outlet for acting and improv along with enabling my penchant for creating fictional people and giving them overly elaborate backstories. I've done similar things with ESO characters, but my RP here centers on fanfic writing and whatever goes on in my own head while I'm playing. So it's nice to have a venue for really portraying my characters and acting out scenes with other people in a relatively chill setting.

Oh and I made an ESO version of a tabaxi pirate rogue I'm going to be playing in our next campaign. So I guess that's another connection. :D

I played First Edition AD&D like a drug-addicted fiend back in the '70s and D&D off-and-on up through the mid-90s.
I've moved around a lot since college, and haven't had time to search-out local groups in many years.
I do know of a local gaming shop where players congregate for games, on-site, and forge groups for play elsewhere, but work and other commitments leave me with little time to get involved there.
I'd still play if there were more solo modules available, but that, understandably, has never been a strong focus of D&D.

Not that I didn't have a LOT of fun playing it when I did! I'm always bursting with creativity, but DnD takes a lot of effort and prep (for some people far more prep than actually playing time), where I can just log on and have all the prep done in TES.

The original creators of the series played a lot of TTRPGs, including Dungeons and Dragons. Tamriel took a lot of inspiration from their own campaigns (it used to BE their home campaign setting), and lots of elements and assumptions are pretty clearly pulled straight from these sorts of games, including stuff like the schools of magic, and the nature of the cosmology. I think some of ESO's writers were DnD writers. Definitely Bill Slavicsek was one, and I *think* Ed Stark too.

Huh. Y'know, when our kids were helping us sort out one of the attics, I found a box stuffed with cardboard tubes, that had all my ancient hand drawn maps in them still - out of the light and air, they're still just as good as they were then, though unrolling them had to be done EXTRA carefully. I got a roll or so of clear "sticky plastic" and encased several of the more elaborate ones. Not all of them were worth doing that with and that stuff's expensive! Lot of hours in some of those maps....

Oh yeah - I also still have a 2 quart pickle jar full of dice, all kinds of dice, even several "collectable" D100s in crazy colors. Amazing the stuff you keep around for nearly 50 years....

I played DnD specifically a grand total of once, but I dabbled in Pathfinder, FAE and have done some freeform on other forums. One of those freeforms was set in Skyrim (the game and the region, so Fourth Era) - as is common with PbP games it died shortly after it started when the DM lost interest. But I did make my Stamblade an ancestor/relative of my character from that game.

I think my first RPG was a DnD game called Eye of the Beholder. I'm not completely sure because when I was a kid I'd play whatever I could get my hands on and never thought about genres, but that's the first one I remember with a character creator and stats.

I had no idea what I was doing. I didn't have the manual so I didn't know what STR or INT or DEX meant, and I didn't know what words like dexterity or constitution meant anyway (I was about 7 at the time). I remember feeling like it was a major breakthrough when I understood that an elf would always be a better wizard than a barbarian, and a half-orc (or half-giant? some big half-human race) was a better barbarian than the elf would ever be. But I loved it, especially making different characters and trying them out (I am still an altoholic in most RPGs).

I played a lot of the later games as well. Dark Sun, Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 and Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2 are the main ones I remember.

It was much later when I was a teenager I got the chance to play 'actual' table top DnD. In real life I've never managed to get beyond one-shots for various reasons, usually either I can't commit to the groups schedule or the group falls apart for whatever reason, but I've done some longer campaigns online with various groups.

I have experience playing DnD in the past, but I am not interested in it anymore.
I used to play some DnD back in the Eighties, me and my friends have been more into a german game called "Das Schwarze Auge" though. I think it was/is called "The Dark Eye" in other countries. There have also been some PC games based on the system over the years, most of which I have of course played.

It all started with books (The Lord of the Rings of course, among others). Then there where those books that give you choices while progressing through the story, including having to roll a dice from time to time for fights or the like ("Do you want to Run (continue on page xx) or Fight (continue on page yy)"). And then me and my friends discovered DnD and the Dark Eye and started our RPG group to play on a weekly basis - I gues I am not the only one who called out "That's exactly how it's been!" at the scene in Stranger Things where the guys were playing their RPG in the basement :)

Well, and next the aera of the home computers started . Must have been christmas 1983 when I got my Commodore 64, at that time with a cassette tape recorder as a storage device - man, was that thing slow... Had to wait a year until next christmas to get my floppy disk drive - finally! And then there was The Bard's Tale in 1985, and I got lost... Wasteland. Might and Magic. Ultima. The SSI games, especially Pool of radiance comes to mind. And so on, and so on...

Strangely enough, the Elder Scrolls series somehow escaped my grasp until Oblivion - I in fact haven't played Morrowind as of now, shame on me! (but I own it on Steam, just have to find the time to give it a try).
So while I still play CRPGs with a passion, the last time I played a table top RPG must be some 20 years ago - the friends I used to play with have moved away and / or lost interest in playing, and it's not exactly easy to find like minded people in my age (getting 50 next month).

I wish D&D was a thing back where i grew up, pretty sure it would be fun as heck. But no, in that backwater town kids played outside ._ . As an adult I tried roleplaying with voice chat in some MMOs including ESO, but um, dysphoric about my voice, if you know what i mean. Never felt comfortable RPing like that. And also voices made presence of another human too obvious, it was interaction between players rather than characters. I couldn't get immersed.
Now, text chat RP.. Ah! That i love. It's my coping mechanism in a way. Wanna write stories but lack the skill? Well, text rp allows to at least pretend x) Making up characters, developing them as crap happens in their lives, pure improvisation when interacting with other chars.. Good stuff.

I began playing DnD with 2nd edition, when thac0 was easy to understand, weapon proficiencies were not and thieves had to jump through hoops to deal damage, but made up for it with %based sklls in a d20 dominated game.

I played 3rd edition, including at university, and 5 years ago began playing 5th edition through roll20 online, which was loads of fun.

When I was younger, the numbers were fun in 3rd edition but now that I am slightly more mature, I appreciate the simplification of the numbers to focus on the roleplaying aspects of things (no more +1 here and +3 there, it's advantage or disadvantage now!) My biggest problem has always been creating characters that are not stupid overpowered, however. It's fun to blind a monster with mage hand wrapping a blanket around their face as you make them fall in magical grease so they have to choose to remove the blanket OR stand up - it's less fun to do 50 damage in a single round at level 4 to a green dragon...

I haven't played in years, but I used to really enjoy it. Mostly played in a friends homebrew chopped-up version of 3.5, but did some one offs of other books, blast if I can recall them. It can be pretty grand with a good group, but that is the biggest factor by far, and trying to recapture lightning makes me tired these days.

I'm also really bad at being committed to world-gen, char-gen, and for some reason I kept getting shuffled into "you're gonna DM right?" and no no no. I am far too flaky.

I miss the old group though, I'd about kill for that kind of energy and chemistry again.

I've always wanted to try Shadowrun or RIFTS but I don't want to have to be the one to run them so it's never happened.

I have experience and interest in playing DnD.
Started with Baldur's Gate 2 and was impressed by its rich lore of the forgotten realm (I read through almost every single lorebook in the game which had nothing to do with quest/combats...). Although it took me quite a while to get a semi-clear understanding of the intricate game mechanics (DnD 2.0), I had a blast in playing and learning through. The 8 schools of magic some of which counter each other seem most appealing to me, as far as combat mechanics go. Later on with plethora of classic modules like improved anvil 6.5 and Ascension, Combat Tactics (to name but a few), the game got even more challenging and fun.

Then moved on to Neverwinter Night. Its huge capability of creating new persistent worlds (PW) drew my attention. This is probably the game I've spent the most time on, while I planewalked from one PW to another, and even DMed one. The funny thing is, even now I still haven't played any of its original game campagins. :D In brief, NWN was more like a visual upgrading of BG2, though the magic system seems to be more simplified.
In between, I played through Icewind Dale 1&2(quite reminiscent of BG2 in terms of visual/audio effects and combat rules), NWN2(worse than NWN1) before it all comes to Divinity:Original Sin series, Pillar of Eternity series, Pathfinder series(still playing the "Wraith of the Righteous" episode).

Just finished New Game+2 of Elden Ring last month and its gothic style and music also reminds me of DnD, though the combat system is completely another story. I haven't played any of the Dark Soul series games, but Elden Ring might lure me to try one simply because of its highly action/tactic-based combat style.

Now I'm playing through Solasta: Crown of the magister(probally finish it in 1 or 2 days), which is basically a game based on DnD 5edition. The game is quite stunning if you have a crush on the DnD new edition thing, though its visual/story/problly more aspects still wait to be improved.

I have experience playing DnD in the past, but I am not interested in it anymore.
I've played a couple of the video game versions of D&D, including the original Baldur's gate and its sequel. They were fun at the time but they never captured long term interest. I couldn't connect with it for some reason, idk why because it's up my general interest alley. Then I tried Elder Scrolls games and basically never looked back. I have never played the the table top version. I'd probably do it once just to say I did if ever given the opportunity, but I have near zero interest in it so don't try to get one going. The only reason I have like 1/100th of interest in the table top is because of what it historically spawned, and few d&d episodes from TV.
