Technically time is/can be relative to all of the ES universe, because it doesn't exist linearly. It's why Dragon Breaks can happen and why numerous different outcomes of the same situation can exist simultaneously. It's basically TES' version of the Mandela Effect.
    Character List [RP and PvE]:
Stands-Against-Death: Argonian Magplar Healer - Crafter
Krisiel: Redguard Stamsorc DPS - Literally crazy Werewolf, no like legit insane. She nuts
Kiju Veran: Khajiit Stamblade DPS - Ex-Fighters Guild Suthay who likes to punch things, nicknamed Tinykat
Niralae Elsinal: Altmer Stamsorc DPS - Young Altmer with way too much Magicka
Sarah Lacroix: Breton Magsorc DPS - Fledgling Vampire who drinks too much water
Slondor: Nord Tankblade - TESified verson of Slenderman
Marius Vastino: Imperial <insert role here> - Sarah's apathetic sire who likes to monologue
Delthor Rellenar: Dunmer Magknight DPS - Sarah's ex who's a certified psychopath
Lirawyn Calatare: Altmer Magplar Healer - Traveling performer and bard who's 101% vanilla bean
Gondryn Beldeau: Breton Tankplar - Sarah's Mages Guild mentor and certified badass old person
Gwendolyn Jenelle: Breton Magplar Healer - Friendly healer with a coffee addiction
Soliril Larethian- Altmer Magblade DPS - Blind alchemist who uses animals to see and brews plagues in his spare time
Tevril Rallenar: Dunmer Stamcro DPS - Delthor's "special" younger brother who raises small animals as friends
Celeroth Calatare: Bosmer <insert role here> - Shapeshifting Bosmer with enough sass to fill Valenwood

Yes, the lore has devolved into several different alternate universes, depending on who you chose to make the ultimate sacrifice to save Tamriel. Which still doesn't explain things if you chose a different hero for each your different characters. Maybe account wide achievements is secretly making the choice of which sacrifice is valid, based upon date of completion/log in.

Perhaps the ultimate retcon still awaits. Maybe the day the game closes it's doors, players will have to watch a cut scene where Varen Aquilerios wakes up from a deep slumber and proclaims, "It was all a dream!"

Iirc the canon choice is Varen, and honestly I think they should have just made him be the only option instead of being able to sacrifice one of the others. Or if they really wanted it to be a meaningful choice, they shouldn't have brought the others back because "fan service". They should have used entirely different characters so your choice remained meaningful.

It’s kind of weird they went that route anyway. Why not have Kasura instead of Sai? Why not have Lyris’ brother … uh, Beerus.

But why give Varen the easy way out? Perhaps he needs to continue to suffer and bear the burden of his guilt.... enhanced by the fact that someone else paid the price for him. But really, I think it was more a business decision, and the lore was sacrificed to achieve it. They knew that the familiar heroes would sell more content. It didn't have to make sense.

    The easy way out???

Wasn’t he screaming for about 1 minute and a half before he died?

I felt bad for him. He did deserve it for all he had done, though. He was the logical choice.

They brought Varen back at the end of Orsinium (which I do believe takes place after the main story) too, so literally all of them come "back", regardless of death
