I think the warden class isn't included, just the now DLC area.

So.... You are upset that something you paid for 5 years ago, that you have played and enjoyed for 5 years, that has 5 year old content... is free?

That would be like saying that I'm upset because my 5 year old car isn't worth what it was worth when I bought it.

Personally, I am quite happy that players have access to older content, and that they will be able to enjoy the upcoming quests. And I don't feel slighted that they are getting it for free.

The free version is access to the DLC area and its associated content only. If you received any mounts, collectors edition, etc then you have items that the free version does not. The Warden class is not included in the freebie either.

Pretty sure the free one doesn't come with the class which originally released with the Chapter. Honestly, it is nice to see them giving all those who purchased ESO before Morrowind access to it, comes as part of the base game these days.

Okay so there are certain perks to having paid for that chapter like warden class. I couldn't find where it said that. Good to know. Thanks all.

I get that if the game is coming to end of life, yes, but that's not what happening here. They're just hiving off certain parts of the paid portion of the game and offering for free. I'd be super mad if I bought that chapter recently.

Morrowind got added into the basic $20 "ESO game" purchase a couple years ago. So anyone who bought the base game in the last few years, got it "free".

Plus, Morrowind (the full chapter, with Warden) was 'free' with Summerset pre-orders (that's how I got it).

And then there was Murkmire DLC - the month after it came out (and people bought it), it was the 'grand prize' for that month's login rewards.

Of course, Morrowind has also been part of ESO+ 'free DLC access' since the year after you bought it.

This "free Morrowind" thing only really does anything for people who 1. haven't bought the base game in recent years; 2. has never bought the $60 "game + all the chapters so far" version; 3. didn't buy it originally or pre-order Summerset; and 4. isn't subbed to ESO+.

Not a lot of people, really.

Did it bother you when it got included in the coat of the base game without the base game price going up? Because it's been included in the base game purchase price for a couple of years now.

Nope. Because people were paying for it. The cost of the chapter was just folded into the base price. You're not gonna ever make me feel bad about asking this because I paid real world money for this. So if this is your goal, you can quit now. I'm not on a war path, I'm just asking because I paid real world money and it's a fair question to ask. Notice no one else is doing this to me.

BTW comparing with purchasing a vehicle is not fair either - unless I can trade my ESO account in for another account somewhere else or break off parts to resell to someone else who can use them in their account.

Does it really matter? It's digital goods that you paid to experience day one, five years ago. I as well paid full price for it day one and ZOS making it free now doesn't bother me in the slightest. We're not being wronged. We essentially paid for "exclusive" timing. The Chapter is now essentially old enough to be considered Freeware within the game.

Think of it this way. You can download and install Starcraft 2 for free. Should everyone who paid for the game on day one be rightfully upset with that?

It also gave you several years to play it ahead of any of the few people who met the criteria spoken to above...you paid for early access. This seems pretty standard in the gaming industry and in MMO's as well. Including expansions in the base game after a point in time.

That was me that talked about cars, not the person you replied to.

I am definitely not trying to start beef or make you feel bad (as I am sure others are not as well), I was simply stating that that's how markets work. I'm not going to return the Christmas tree I bought last year because the same model is on sale this year (or make a Karen of myself and demand a refund of the difference), the same way that if someone gets a car as a gift that I bought myself and paid for, I won't be mad about it. Supply and demand. Purchases. Deciding what to do with our money.

Goods and services are offers that we choose or not to invest in, knowing full well that the value of these goods and services will change. As others have pointed out, this is a normal process, and one that is not rare. The number of people who will be getting Morrowind for free is probably infinitesimal, which is why I was simply curious about the frustration. You wanted the expansion when it came out, you paid for it then. You used the goods you paid for, enjoyed it, and probably got a lot out of your investment. Others getting it for free does not diminish any of that, nor does it make it "unfair".

The same way that some people sub to ESO+ and don't purchase or prepurchase expansions, they simply wait for them to be available. Some choose immediate gratification, others wait. I don't go around feeling frustrated that they are paying less for the service I decided to invest in earlier.

Digital markets are notorious for this as well, with content diminishing in price or becoming free over time... hence the curiosity.

On a side note, the reverse is true as well - people who got let's say the Psijic home for free vs those who have to pay a ridiculous amount of Crowns for it now... it's part of the market. They might whine about it, but eventually, if they want the goods, they will purchase it even though others got it for free.

Usually a year after the last part is released it is included as dlc, then eventually with the new version of the base game.

I buy the new parts [usually] pre-order. Yes, I pay for the content, but I get a year to play before it's released as dlc. Worth it for me. Your mileage may vary.

This, most MMO does this, else getting into the game get too expensive and keeping track of who owns that tend to get confusing.

Morrowind has been "free" for any player who buys the base game for like years now. It's common practice in MMOs to make older expansion-type content free or added to a bundle after a certain amount of time.

A better comparison is choosing to pay a premium ticket price to see a new first-run movie after its release, versus choosing to wait a few months (or merely a few weeks if it turns out to be a huge flop) and see it for considerably less when it hits the second-run bargain theaters, versus choosing to wait several months or a year until it's available on subscription cable movie channels and streaming services, versus choosing to wait until it's eventually shown by over-the-air broadcast TV networks and can be viewed for free using a TV antenna.

There's nothing wrong with asking, but some people have gotten a bit heated in their outrage over having content they'd paid for being released for free to everyone, so if anyone seems to be criticizing you for asking then it's most likely because they're thinking "Oh, great, here we go again!" I'm neither excusing their criticism nor taking issue with it, merely explaining that this type of topic has already led to some heated back-and-forth discussions, so any new questions along those lines-- however innocent or well-meaning they might be-- tend to rekindle all of the "same old same old" arguments.

The only way anyone could purchase the game recently is if they had the game before Morrowind came out and never once bought the chapter until now? It comes as part of the base game now. As in, everyone for YEARS now have automatically had the chapter when they bought the game now.
