Account Wide Achievements - clarification for logging in

Can anybody confirm the order to log into your characters in order that your main would get credit for the achievements? My understanding is that you log in on your lowest first, and the main last. Am I understanding that correctly?

I logged in with my oldest first so I would get all the core game achievements assigned to him (main quest line etc)

I logged in my main, with the most achievements, first. I wanted to have those achievements on her name.

There will still be a chance you complete achievements one your alts, then. All those achievements where you need to do a certain amount of quests, launder gold etc. - if you don't already have them done on your main, it can happen they will be fullfilled on your alts before you log your main and attributed to them.

I am pretty much annoyed by all this, I just started with my main and try to cope with so many achievements no attributes to alts I never play anymore.

There is no perfect way.
For achievements that were already earned, it doesn't matter. The game has a date earned and it'll label it with whoever got it first.

The problem is for achievements that are cumulative but you haven't earned yet. They'll add together, and whoever crosses the finish line will get it. For this, if you care, your main shouldn't be first, but also not last. If you have a second character who has done a lot, do them first, then main second is probably best. But there's no way to have everything line up, so some stray achievements are going to be on some alt who did a single thing and crossed the finish line.

Yes and no.

For one and done achievements, whoever earned it first will get the credit attributed to them. If an EP alt finished Stonefalls before your AD main did it for Cadwell’s, the EP alt will be attributed the relevant achievements. Only way to avoid that is not logging in on the EP alt at all or deleting them.

For aggregate achievements (Warden Slayer or Mass Murderer for examples), it is whoever pushes the number to the required amount. If your main kills 99 wardens and an alt kills 1, you want to log in on the alt first to count the 1, then your main for the remaining 99 (if your main is who you want credited for the achievement).

Unless you only have a few characters, there’s no easy way to know the best order if you didn’t check on live prior to todays update.

As I understand it, it updates to the oldest possible completion.

So I'm in the process of logging in from newest to most complete, so any partial completions (e.g. monster trophies) will trigger on my main if they top it up to completion, and all the oldest achievements of my main will overwrite my other characters.

Log order matters on the type of achievements that rely on x number of something rather than a time stamp.

Time stamp achievements goes to the first character that did it.

The x number type will add up as you log on to your characters and when the achievement is completed, the character who added the final amount gets credit.

That doesn't seem to be true. All the main quest achievements were assigned to my main, even though she completed some of them after the very first ESO character I created (who is now an alt). I logged into my main first. Not sure if that made a difference.

ETA: I haven't checked my alt's achievements since logging in with her. Maybe logging in with her reassigned the main quest achievements to her? I'll check later.

I logged in with my main, who has the most achievements unlocked, first, then tried to log in with the rest of them in order according to amount of time played.

Yes and no. It is mostly just a visual and personal distinction. All your characters will have achievement but there is an "earned by" tag on achievements now showing you who earned it first. Going forward, that will indeed be first char to get it, but as part of initial rollout it will be first character you log into who already has that achievement.

So you may want to log into your main or maybe your oldest character to get the "earned by" the way you want it.

This can get tricky with cumulative achievements, though. If an achievement requires you to kill 100 Dread Minotaurs in Dungeon X, and you have one character with 93 kills and 1 character with 7 kills, the character who logs on last will get "earned by". Because in that case, it is who put you over the top that gets "earned by". Whether it is jumping from 93 to 100 or 7 to 100. Whatever char you are on when it hits 100 gets "earned by". Some people might prefer the character with 93 kills to get "earned by" because they did bulk of work. Logging into that alt with 7 kills first and then your main with 93 kills will give main the "earned by". But logging into that alt first might give the alt other achievements you would prefer they did not get.

[Edit: Striking through part about fully earned achievements depending on login order. I have been corrected that fully earned achievements go by earliest date on original character achievement to determine "earned by". It is only the unearned cumulative achievements ("Kill 100 Flesh Colossus in Trial X", "Learn 250 drink recipes," etc.), that things can get weird based on login order and which character puts you over the top to get achievement.]

Yes, the updates are done upon logging in, so it reassigns things when you log into a character who did it earlier. There might be some specific achievements where that's bugged, but on the whole that's how it works. I logged into my first character third because I felt like that would be best for those cumulative achievements and all the early achievements were reassigned to her when I did.

I was trying to explain the "tricky" part, but was having trouble wording it succinctly enough, so I abandoned the attempt.

Don’t think it does. The character that completed it first is supposed to be the name recognized no matter what order we log into our characters.

This part is incorrect. The achievement is ultimately awarded to the character who has the earliest earned by date. So if I log in on tank who earned Mountain God, I will get the achievement. Then, when I log in on my templar who got Mountain God first, I won’t get a new pop up for the achievement but the earned date and character name will change to reflect my templar since, chronologically, she earned it before my tank.

It does matter to me because I've been playing the same main character since the game launched on console. I have most of the monster hunter complete on my main, and the remainder on another couple characters. I'd like my main to be credited.

The one thing to consider for the do X type achievements is that trying to get your main's name as the completion of the combined achievement is mostly going to be futile. As long as you have any of the aggregate achievements open, any time you play on your alts you have the chance of completing those achievements with your alts name.

For me, I am logging my main first, since I have most achievements (every non dungeon/trial achievement and escape from guards) completed on that character. Then, I am logging my alts and hoping that they fill in a ton of the kill x creatures in vet dungeons that I am missing.

This makes so much sense and honestly, not something I had considered. I was thinking about it as a 'one and done' type of thing.

I logged in on my main. Since she has all the skyshards all my chars now have the acheev. Unfortunately for my alts all the map icons have disappeared. Not even my addons work.

I didn't expect to care about the Awa. But losing those icons really bites.

My understanding is that it's only important for cumulative achievements where between some/all your characters you have enough progress to finish it. If that's the case their progress will be added up and whichever character takes them to or over the total will get credited with the achievement.

Achievements that you've already unlocked will be automatically credited to whichever character earned it first, but only after you've logged into them. (Characters you don't log into won't count at all.)

For example the 'reach level 10' achievement now shows it was unlocked by the 5th character I logged into, even though she's the 3rd who is above level 10. Once I'm done logging into all of them it will have updated a few more times and will show my main unlocked it, because she's the oldest character over level 10 on my account. (The oldest is actually a mule, because I kept re-making characters I want to use.)

This is what everyone (not on zopium) was saying would happen from the first week of PTS; Players that don't pay attention to patch and notes and/or PTS updates would be bitterly disappointed when they saw the reality of what zos are doing vs how they advertised it.
