Interested in a new off-meta Sword-n-Board build

For what content? Anything but tank. I'd like the build to perform decently in 4-man PUGs (vet and norm) as either a DPS or a healer (healer preferred, cuz I can't stand the queue times for DPS). Also, I'd be game to a use a version of it for soloing dungeons, WBs, or other challenging content.

Why? Honestly, I just want a change of pace. I love the feel and aesthetics of shields and 1-h weps, and I also like experimenting with outside the box setups and roles. In addition, there are some improvements coming to Bash in the Ascending Tide update. So this is entirely to have fun and mix it up, but I also don't want to be tossed out of 4-man PUGs either. And if it can perform as a sturdy solo build that pumps out some damage, even better.

Existing options? I found a healer build by Xynode that fits the bill; however, it requires two trial gear sets which I unfortunately won't have access to. I wonder what other gear would work. I also found a couple random DPS sword-n-board builds, but they were a bit dated. For some reason though, I have my mind set on a healer (would let me queue quicker).

Please let me know your thoughts and if you've run or found anything similar. Details welcomed! Thanks!

there are a lot of pvp healer builds that run a 1h/shield and resto staff (which can work in pve too)

resto back bar for your HOTs and 1h/shield front bar for resists, generally can work well on something like a templar since you have a really fleshed out class kit for both dmg and healing and use the resto for more HOT and resource restore

one of the key things i know from some people who built like this were very high mag recov (3k-5k) so sustain was never an issue for spamming burst heals/purge (alliance war purge)

That's true, I've seen this setup discussed in PvP. Perhaps that may be the only proper context to try this out.

I have a DK healer I've been working on. Revolves around damage shields in addition to raw healing.
    I use 1h/shield + Resto staff
Naga Shaman in heavy, gives Minor Mending on applying a damage shield
Combat Physician gives a damage shield on crit healing.
Infernal Guardian does a little damage on applying a damage shield.

Fragmented Shield gives Major Mending and a small team-wide shield, as well as proccing Minor Mending from Naga Shaman. Used just prior to big hits, this gives a bit of mitigation but also allows you to follow up with massive heals from Obsidian Shard.

I have DK SnB bruiser, but it mostly uses generic abilities so can be put on any class:
Frontbar (only) Knight-Errant SnB and 3 body pieces, with nirnhoned sword and stamina enchanted shield.
Backbar (only) Seventh Legion Infused 2H with berserker, 2 jewelry pieces and one body piece
Mythic ring with damage capabilities (malach/fete/markyn), medium trainee belt, 2pc medium monster set of choice (balorgh is my default, but many options will do).

Skills that I always use (rest are flex slots)
    1. Pierce, Deep slash (aoe spammable), Power Slam (single target spammable), Shield discipline ulti
    2. Stampede, Volatile Armor, Molten Armaments (or rally, but then another Earthen Heart ability for minor brutality needed)

So, errr, I play a double 2H tank. You want to solo stuff? Brawler + Master's 2H is one of the most OP options for that. You want dungeon queues to pop instantly? Be a tank. Not a fake tank. A double 2H tank with high AOE damage, "viable" single target damage and an AOE taunt that will carry any PUG by taunting everything and killing everything. It's essentially an unkillable solo build, masquerading as a tank. Works in every normal dungeon and non-DLC vet dungeon. You can also just solo those, where mechanics allow it, albeit killing bosses may be slow and you're better off with a group.

Furthermore I've played this build in several DLC vet dungeons, including recent ones. In some ways it's worse, in some ways it's better than a regular tank in those. With full knowledge of mechanics you can probably tank every DLC vet dungeon with this too. The problem is more that, if you screw up, you may be accused by a "knowledgeable" group member of being a fake tank for not using 1H+S.

I developed and discussed the build extensively in the following thread:

    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/comment/7525277

The clip notes are as follows:
    • Master's 2H front bar. Tormentor 2H back bar.
    • Stamsorc with 40K+ health and capped resistances (33K).
    • 5K health regen with potion. Additional self-healing from Crit Surge and meditation. Optionally: Dark Deal.
    • Medium armor, Vicious Ophidian and (as of late) a Precise weapon for sustain and 40% crit rate.
    • You can't block, due to Gaze of Sithis. Instead you shield with Brawler or you meditate for 30% damage reduction.
    • Stampede on the back bar is a small AOE taunt with the Tormentor set.
    • Razor Caltrops for penetration or Dark Deal for soloing very hard content, such as (v)BRP.

I've been hesitant to take this into normal trials, although it should probably work there too. I did nCR+0 with it comfortably. The problem with wearing Tormentor in a trial setting is that you easily taunt something only the other tank should taunt. You do want to use the gap closer over the Undaunted taunt to activate the Tormentor set and reach the resistance cap.

Other content I've done with this includes vMA, vDSA (with group, easy) and trying to solo vBRP. For the latter you want Dark Deal. It's no good recovering resources via meditation in that case. To do "crazy" content you need to sustain Brawler and be able to stay on the move all the time. That's when I replace Caltrops with Dark Deal. I got as far as the first boss in vBRP, which looked doable with extreme patience. vVateshran should be a cakewalk with this build, by the way. I'm finished farming everything there, thus simply have not tried yet.

The limits of the build fall into two categories. One is that you can't block. Of course you might build without Sithis, but it gives you so much. It ups your health, it gets you to the resistance cap in medium with Vicious Ophidian, and it gives you health regen, which is also a big part of the build. Not being able to block is a mathematical drawback. This build may be hit twice as hard as a blocking build, even when you meditate. It probably won't work as the main tank in vet trials. On the other hand you have so much self-healing, you never really get caught out by low health or by pressure. The build shines for tanking the Maw in vet Depths of Malatar, because it outheals the poison spew pressure. It also shines in the vCauldron Baron Zaudrus fight, because of Brawler. When there are many targets to hit and you have the sustain to keep it up, the Brawler shield rules. This is why we're wearing Vicious Ophidian. When your're soloing, or in some fights with a group, your defense stands and falls with your ability to sustain the Brawler shield.

The other limit of the build, for the purposes of soloing, is that it's melee. You can't solo vet Scalecaller on it, for example, because that requires you to kite the orbs in the Doylemish fight or you get killed by the mechanic. It's also a slow build in terms of single target damage, when you compare it to the lightning heavy attack kiting builds I've seen vet Scalecaller been done with.

I saw this pet stamsorc parse from skinny cheeks a while back, from the hybrid patch PTS. It looks like sword and shield front bar/ two hand back bar. He was weaving extra bashes between things, which may have been reduced on a recent pts patch, but it’s still loads of dps

It should work for any of those, pug, dps, heal, wb, without needing specific sets. S&B gives a nice 5% spell and weapon damage boost and some good defensive passives.

For a magicka build, you can slot any class skills on the board bar, whether for heal, dps or whatever, and then use either res staff or destro staff on alt bar for heal or dps.
Res is also fun as you can more easily refill magicka with HA and then switch back to board bar blasting or healing, so can maybe slot buffs or hots on res bar.

You can also easily respecc from one role to another as you need by adding more healing or more dps magicka skills or even do off tank with damage shields from light armour on board bar and/or res shield on back bar.

I would advise rather just using the deep slash and avoiding the taunt unless you are soloing.

Use the sets you have and build from there.

@ArcaneScientius Honestly, I'm not sure why I didn't think to try this in the first place, lol. I'll probably add either Power Bash or Deep Slash (or both) to my non-resto staff bar. Follow up question though: what traits and enchants would you run on the one hand wep and shield? I'll be running a Magplar with resto staff on other bar and wearing Spell Power Cure and Hollowfang.

I have no experience as templar healer. You have excellent sets already.

I would put crit on the sword, as it would more likely trigger hemoglobin and if you are crit healing you will likely overheal and proc spell cure. Maybe use either absorb magicka or weapon damage glyph to add more spell damage, but up to your preference.

Infused and magicka on shield. You have a few less max magicka lines from crit build, so it should give a nice few points.

I would probably use reverb bash for the stun rather than power bash as you won't get much damage from it as mag build but could be useful in pvp, and deep slashes gives nice aoe maim debuff + snare for getting away, with or without the reverb stun.

I warn you, you will feel a bit weird swiping at air because you will have LA weaving as part of your routine and you will click when there is no one even close.

Edit: you can also run penetration or nirnhoned on sword if you want to slot some dps skills there. I would keep infused shield either way.

I run this on an imperial and have had some good fun with it. I haven't tried it with vet content personally, but it should be fine
