So is area voice chat/mic disabled now on the Playstation version of ESO?

I finally managed to snag a PS5, and once I logged into my Playstation account and booted up ESO for the first time in like forever, I notice that is no more area chat in the busy cities.

Quite the opposite of what I expected, since the PS5 DualSense has a built-in mic so I expected chatter up the wazoo.

Or am I doing something wrong? I enabled everything: mic, chat, and group audio. But nothing.

Most people choose not to be in area chat. Some major cities may have a lot of people in it but outside of that it's probably few and far between.

Having heard arguments, bodily functions, making up and "banging" tunes (and outright misogynistic and rascist abuse) I choose to avoid area chat like the plague, as do most of my friends.

Not true on the Xbox side of the house. It's chatter literally everywhere you go. And it used to be the same exact thing on Ps4.

    But silence now.

So either: area mic chat has been disabled by Sony/Zenimax since the last time I logged into ESO on Ps4.

Or there is a setting I am overlooking.

If your area chat is ticked you will hear any players in area chat. As I say most of those I know avoid it for the reasons given

There used to be a bug where you could not get into voice chat, but AFAIK it was fixed. You'll hear chat mostly in Craglorn or the capitals, though

On Playstwtion NA Riften is... notorious to put it kindly. People hang out right out side the bank, you should check it out.

Local voice chat is on by default but if you switch it off for one toon it switches it of for all toons. I'd say 95% of us turned it off at some point and never bothered turning it back on.

Actually on PS4NA both Riften and Vulkel Guard both qualify as..."entertainment"

For the longest time (by that, I mean about 5 years), I had to remove myself from area chat every time I logged in. But just recently, I've noticed that I am not in area chat or any other channels by default. So, I no longer ever hear random awfulness at high volume reminding me to once again leave the area chat. Thank goodness!

I stumbled across a guy preaching at Vulkel Guard wayshrine a few years back. Quite bizarre but people seemed to enjoy it.

Davons Watch wayshrine is popular for dueling, no idea if they use voice chat or not. It's probably the best of those three places for duels- Riften and Vulkel Guard the guards will attack necros, vamps and werewolves while they're dueling and the bounties really add up. Whereas Stonefalls is outside of town so the guards don't see you.

If you leave voice chat, it remembers that preference. Other than that, it works just fine.

They changed it to remember your preference....I think a few months ago. Now if you leave area it remembers you don't want to be in area chat until you manually turn it back on. A lot of people turned it off and never looked back.

I tried group chat today and it wasn’t working.

I did not want to log out to fix it because I was in Cyrodiil so it was text chat for the duration.

The problem is that group chat audio is only coming from the little speaker on the PS5 DualSense, and not the actual TV speakers.

Making it borderline non-functional because even if the DualSense speaker volume is turned all the way up, it's still too faint to hear anything.

I happen to like all the weird chatter, the conversations, and even the blaring music.

If I didn't like that, I wouldn't be playing ESO and instead sticking with Skyrim.
