Zaan or Maws?

Magcro, love the zaans set. But keep seeing all these maws set pets runnin around and cant help but wonder whats best for me...as I know maws is great.

I feel like zaans is best on fights where I can be fairly close for the majority of the fight...it has very high potential no doubt. But on the otherhand, I feel maws is more universal and works good on all fights including trash pile burns...but may be less dmg than zaans on the fights that matter.

What do you all think is better for a magcro? As well though, is it really more situation based, then which is actually "better"?

If you hate tanks then go with Maws

For random team members, I'd go with 2 crit pieces, like slimecraw and iceheart.
Proc sets need to be buffed by healer + tank, but as majority says that they are not needed (or should just dps), meeting real healer or tank is rare.

Skinny cheeks did a good comparison a while back. There's a vid if you google. Interestingly i think he came out getting most out of stormfist but ofc the one piece sucks.

I tested a few; found that maw was better than zaan on the dummy. I'd guess given the constraints on zaan it's going to significantly outperform it in real world. Certainly hits hard and tracks which is handy.

edit - this thread is helpful - https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/593152/can-you-help-me-with-a-link-to-current-best-monster-sets-pls

For magcro I'd suggest Stormfist or Iceheart, Zaan is fine but it can't crit.

Maw gets buffed by Deadric Prey (+20% damage) so it's pretty good monster set for sorc if the tank can live with big daedroth occupying half of his screen.

I have said it before - but there should be an extra vet Banished Cells HM achievement where you have to keep the 3 Daedroth alive while killing Rillis - but all players must also have Maw proc’d, AT. THE. SAME. TIME. Lol.

    Maw
Maw does similar or more damage than Zaan.
    Maw does more damage upfront.
    Maw does continous damage.
Maw is easier to obtain than Zaan.
Maw is more reliable than Zaan.
Maw can proc Burning, Zaan cant.
Maw can have a really high uptime.
    Maw can crit, Zaan cant.
Maw is affected by things that boost Pet damage (like Sorcerers Daedric Prey).
(Maybe one of Maws attacks is boosted by AOE modifiers, like those from the Necro Class.)
    Maw looks cooler.
    Lets praise the mighty Maw!

    Zaan
Zaan on the other hand has a better 1 piece bonus (Crit > Max Magicka)
Zaan can produce a high damage number at the last tick.

    indecisive
Maw annoys the tank, Zaan doesnt. So Maw is bad if you like your tank and want him to perform as well as possible. But on the other hand if you want to troll your tank or dont like him... :D

But there are other Monstersets which might do as well as Maw without being as annoying to the tank.

I like running Nerien'eth, Kjalnar's and Ilambris on my macgros. I don't mind max and they look cool, plus they're not half bad as DPS options either. I use the Maw on my main (sorc) though, and keep Zaan's in my backpack for some encounters or if the tank gets conniptions (only saw it happen once).

I did that with a group of friends, even the tank was wearing it. But 3 out of 4 Maws were on Rilis 95% of the time, they're easily redirected. If the DDs know what they're doing there shouldn't ever be a Maw on Daedroths for more than a 2-3 seconds (what takes Rilis to teleport and the DD to redirect the Maw).

And two pets out, plus the silly horse non combat pet, a banker, defiler and aegis caller, whilst dropping atronachs

It's seriously funny running that lot to prank your guild group tank.

Lol I had a guild event/charity stream once where we did a naked run of nSS where the only armor piece all 12 of us started with was Maw. It was hysterical.

Trash fights were insane with the big cats constantly jumping and throwing me into about 5 Maws. Also when I grouped things the best I could and then 8 Maws just came running at me with fire breath. It did make the fire room really fun with the holes in the floor since nobody could see them. Also it was great fighting any of the dragons since 12 Maws would all group up right under it right as it landed.

    10/10 would do again.

I prefer Maw on my Magcro for ease of use and its versatility, but Zaan will do more single target DPS if your dummy....riding.

    my thoughts:
    • zaan is probably better for only single target unless your a sorc that can boost pet dmg, while maw does have some aoe dmg with some of the attacks
    • zaan is more limited because of the max proc range as well as more downtime (maw is up almost all the time dealing consistent dmg)
    • maw can crit, while zaan cannot (zaan is "scaling" dmg which is excluded from proc crits)

i do like how the maw looks and have considered it on some toons, even one of my experimental tank builds lol
    plays PC/NA
    handle @Necrotech_Master
    active player since april 2014

i have my main house (grand topal hideaway) listed in the housing tours, it has multiple target dummies, scribing altar, and grandmaster stations (in progress being filled out), as well as almost every antiquity furnishing on display to preview them

feel free to stop by and use the facilities

Maws damage, as (almost?) all proc sets is also scaled (increases the more weapon / spell damage you have).

Virtually everything is situational. If you plan to run a monster setup, what is best is going to depend on the fight at hand. Zaan is usually better for melee, some fights like dragons in SS, domihaus is tough to beat, Maw is typically at or near the top in most other situations.

The better question, are monster sets even worth it? Lately, it seems that the better option is almost always one piece Slimecraw for the crit, and a mythic like Kilt or DDF if straight damage is your goal.
