Same, I had no idea before this thread that recognizable characters can show up. I've done this quest so many times, but mostly on characters who haven't done much else. Cause they are the ones that need the xp.

I've seen:

Earl Leythen, Kassandra, Captain Nala-do, and King Laloriaran Dynar.

Also the indistinct spirit, whoever the poor soul is.
