Heavy Armor - is it tank only?

This one's pretty straight forward - are there any builds other than tanks who make good use of the stats on Heavy Armor and if so how many pieces do they employ?

My three Sorcerers use 1, 2, and 7 pieces of heavy armor respectively. None of them are tanks. Number one is a healing conjurer, two is a ranged DPS, and three is a melee dps.

I have a melee dps sorc relying mainly on class skills - a mix of heavy & light seems good for that.

Thanks guys - what did the heavy offer your character over the alternatives (LA/MA) that helped you decide?

For toon one it was a choice I made early on to increase my survivability. It has worked so I have kept with it. As my magicka regen increased I added more for a while, but then I got Conjured Armor and went back to just one.

For toon two it was the same, but I knew conjured armor would be a later skill choice so I made it an Altmer for magicka regen and added 2 heavy and 2 medium pieces.

For toon 3 I just wanted to see how viable a 2H sorcerer was and found out it works great. This toon is level 17 and the only sorcerer skill on my bar ATM is Crystal Shard, which I use as an opener.

All of this will change with time though. Being able to allocate hundreds of skill points at VR10 means it's going to be a very flexible system.

If you are a min/maxer than you shouldn't take heavy armor unless you are a tank.

The block bonus is only really beneficial for tanks and the damage reduction is not really that great to outweight the magicka/stamina/DPS efficiency you lose.

The problem right now is that you can't see the damage reduction, but only the armor amount. A lot of people assume that having twice the armor makes them double as survivable, which is not the case.

Some number calculators have shown that the difference in damage reduction between light and heavy is somewhere at 15% I think. You can find it somewhere on tamriel foundry.

And this only applies to physical damage, while you even lose spell resistance.

My healer only really wears enough light armor to cap out magicka regen with the passive. Beyond that I'll equip heavy pieces. I may switch it out when I get into veteran content if spell costs start giving me issues. Right now with capped Magicka though, that's not the cast so I don't need the extra spell cost reduction from the other light armor pieces.

Thanks - that is what the passives seem to indicate in the HA line, but I see so many non-tanks wearing it (pre vet) that I thought I was possibly missing something - hoping really.

My Orc Nightblade used heavy because (1) He wanted to live and (2) His race gets bonuses to heavy armor usage.

But I have found a much better reason to wear Heavy.... it drops more often.

It's because the game doesn't tell you the actual damage reduction and you have almost no comfortable means of comparing your damage output with yourself in different armor and with others.

That is why I also dislike having heavy armor DPS or healers in the party. They don't bring anything to the table in my opinion, but slow you down or even risk the whole mission, especially when there is a DPS race boss (usually with adds being respawned and accumulating over time).

My opinion is not very popular within the ESO community though, because it's heartless min/maxing and it's against the 'play how you want' mantra.

I'll probably get flamed for posting this.
