Are people able to post in the forums if they do not own the game? I hope it is the case since that means everyone does have a horse in the race.

Personally I think only those who actively play should be able to post. How can someone who is not playing and is out of touch with the game's current state give an informed opinion on what the game does or does not need?

Other games with mandatory subscriptions require an active subscription to post on their forums. But with free to play I don't know they could monitor this.

I assume they could use a similar process, but have it check something else, like when you last logged into ESO rather than whether your subscription is active. But at the moment I'm not sure if there's any link between your forum account and your game account at all, so they'd have to build that first. (Which might require some negotiation with Sony and other parts of Microsoft for the console versions, since those use your Xbox/Playstation account rather than an ESO account.)

But for example Guild Wars 2 has their forum set up so only people with the paid version of the game can post, free players can't and if you're banned from the game you're automatically banned from the forum as well, so that's a similar sort of check but based on something other than a subscription.

I remember being surprised when my ESO forum account wasn't disabled just after launch when I hadn't bought ESO. I wanted to keep reading but I was surprised I was still able to post and start new topics as well. I made one asking if that was intentional and only after that was my account disabled. Then when I bought the game I had to ask ZOS to let me back on the forum.

I was glad I could keep reading the forum in between though. As I said before I kept checking every few months to see what was going on and what players thought of it, looking for something that convinced me the game was worth paying for every month and instead I heard about the change to buy-to-play, which definitely made it worth it. If I hadn't been able to do that I might not have heard about the change until much later, or maybe not at all and I'd have missed out.

No idea probably thousands of 0 star accounts from people who only bothered with the forums due to an issue that required bringing to supports attention, as for active ones best guess would be in the low hundreds, that is if you would count active as posting once a week or so, but that's just a guess if your definition of active commenting everyday, could just as likely be in the dozens for all I know a lot of names seem to appear frequently in threads.

I didn't even know about the forums till I got an email invite in either 2018/2019 giving me access to the public test server, saw that I would need forum access to be able to comment on stuff.

I followed up with support to go through creating a forum account shortly afterward, then I realized I would have to download the game again for the PTS and never ended up bothering with it.

Stuck with the forums though at first mostly just to check for info on maintenance and @BenevolentBowd weekly threads on the golden and luxury vendors, over time I started responding to more threads that peaked my interest.

Now I am one of those potentially dozens of active people that are here at least once a day.

Even just scrolling down before making my comment I have seen plenty of the names on here in other threads plenty of times before, while I may not know them, in terms of having actually chatted, I have seen some of them in threads often enough to recognize the names at a glance at this point.

    Thanks for the shoutout.

I have no problem with inactive players being able to read the forums for the reasons you stated. What I have a problem with is inactive players posting on controversial topics and asking for major changes when they aren't playing now and may never play again.

Just got the 1500 agrees badge... only 897 people have it. Not a large amount of people are talking.

Started checking my own and the big number people here on the forum are definitely in the minority it seems. Not that I'm one of those people... I rarely get a whole lot of people agreeing with me lol.

I know my little brother said the amount of reactions he sees being thrown on these forums is incredibly low, then again he's used to platforms like Space Battles. With that in mind the ESO forums are not the most popular forums on planet Earth, and the amount of players that play ESO and come here are very low.

Does it really matter? I mean...after a while...all the posts are almost the same....different person..but almost the same. It does get tiresome to see the same type of posts. It's usually a complaint and some are legit mind you...but for the most part it's tedious.

    That's just me.

I always have the forum page open while playing...I take a glance and see the topics...and again..to me it's repetitive..except for this post..lol.

32401 have the 5 agrees badge. If we assume half those people are no longer around, that would be about 16000 active users.

I think that it's probably a decent amount like that because most people in every forum do not actually post, they only read. And of the active posters, very few people post frequently. So some fraction of the 5 agree badge is probably more likely to be the case with active posters, and there's probably a very small percentage that are power posters such as myself.

    edit:

This is a community manager speaking about the Overwatch forums, but he indicated this is generally applicable. And in my own experience helping the CM team of a different game, it was true there too. So the following is true as a general rule, and thus why I am posting here. As it's likely similar with OW, with probably a bit higher engagement here than usual as that was specifically cited as the reason these forums are still around when other ZOS game forums got shutdown.
There’s a general rule of thumb that’s known by most community professionals:

    * Less than 10% of all players will ever even look at your forums or owned channels
    * Of that 10%, less than 10% will ever be an active participant in the conversation on these owned channels
