Excavation disaster!

Hello,
Lately I have be just ruining all my excavations by digging too deep and destroying the artifact.
Some time when using trowel or shovel, I am not sure HOW deep it will go?
I am the highest rank for trowel and shovel
Does one bar for the trowel remove 2 layers of dirt? If I use both bars, is that 3?
For the shovel, same thing is it only 1 layer of 3x3? I believe the 3x3 layer has to be the same type or it just does a single - right?
As well, when I look at the dirt type - I am not sure how deep it is in the the first place. Does this depend Difficulty - ie green-gold (ultimate)
Green is 1 level deep, ultimate is 6?
Advice or thoughts?

SpiritKitten✭✭✭✭Don't overcomplicate it. When you get to the dark shiny big rocks that look like fresh poo, that is the last time to dig deep. After that, only use single layer.2 -
