Why aren't the higher quality texture options available in the settings UI?

The settings UI's max texture setting is three tiers below what is possible by editing the settings file.

The setting in question is "SET MIP_LOAD_SKIP_LEVELS "-3""

Max UI settings leave everything blurry until standing in front of it for a second or two, which looks awful. This setting makes all textures load instantly. I've had this turned on for ages, and get over 100 frames per second (with all other settings maxed) on a graphics card 2 generation old now.

This seems like a fairly obvious performance increase, and almost certainly something that would provide even better visual quality than other recent graphics updates. Anyway, for those that don't have this setting turned on (it will show the quality as 'supreme' in the ui once it is set in the settings txt file), turn it on, look around, be awed :)

Possibly for the same reason they removed everyone else's companions from view in cities... they are trying to guarantee a certain level of performance, based on some low end target machine I guess.

You can do it, but it's not 'officially' supported, so results are on you. That said, been running this since forever, and haven't noticed any performance decrease.

Hmm. Well, two points on this. I would imagine removing the companions was more of a number of players/npcs/mobs limitation, and their non-static nature, whereas texture limitations would be more of a graphics card rendering thing that could be mitigated by simply having a graphics card with more onboard memory and cores. There was also the previous modification to non-combat pets where they were moved to purely client side rendering to improve performance.

Of course, those are total guesses, I have no idea what the actual thinking is behind these performance adjustments, or really anything at all about what I'm going on about.

In regard to your second point, the current 'high' graphics quality can't be run on many sets of hardware. The minimum performance requirements would therefore be based on the lowest quality settings. This setting hasn't been updated to take into account more than 4 generations of graphics cards, and I'm wondering if enabling an existing feature may have just slipped peoples' minds, because "that's just how things are". Like someone getting used to a hinge that squeaks, or a door that doesn't shut quite right. Felt worth bringing up, because I can't imagine people with high powered hardware have a particularly positive impression of the regular 'max' texture quality setting.

I noticed this because trying to view peoples costumes is basically impossible without standing in front of them for a second or two with them in the view port. I guess this may also be a way to get people to more properly appreciate my totally sick get ups
