Vaermina's Gambit End? (SPOILERS)

So... when you get to the end of this quest and....

Talk to Vaermina, she makes it sound like she will trap you in quagmire, but then you can just walk out a mirror. Is that supposed to be the case? Did I miss something? It seems very strange to me.

There is more then one mirror, and you have to fight a NPC before picking a mirror out. Picking the wrong one, ports you back but most pick right the first time

Weird. I didn't actually have to fight anybody. There were NPCs in front of the mirrors, but they didn't attack. I just took the mirror behind the General and was done.

That can happen if you 'jumped' some of the dialog as they are not 'active' yet.

That...is not at all what happened to me.
First time I tried, I used the mirror to my right and appeared out in the real world immediately. After a few minutes of running around Wayrest, for no apparent reason, my game logged me out to the character selection screen, and when I logged back in, I was back in Quagmire. I'd assumed that it was a really mind-screwy 'that was just a dream' moment, which made perfect sense for the plot. The next time, I tried a different mirror, had to fight the dual-wielder on the way out, and had no problems regarding logging out.

I think I'm gonna be disappointed if this was a bug. I felt it made for a really great bit of story-based 'revenge' from Vaermina, leaving you wondering if this time was a dream also, and you were going to have to 'finish' the quest all over again.

@frozenchicken sorry to disappoint, but it was almost definitely a bug. Wayrest (and, indeed, all of Stormhaven) has a bug where you occasionally experience a random roll back. What likely happened is that you went through the correct mirror, went to Wayrest, played for a bit and then got rolled back to still being inside Quagmire.

I think we have to remember too that the Daedric Princes are addicted to big talk even when they can't back it up with action. Look at the things Molag Bal says when you knock over one of his Dark Anchors -- he threatens to do just about everything except give you a root canal or a tax audit, but nothing comes of it in the end. And as a general rule, their talk gets more and more extravagant as their ability to act gets less and less. It seems perfectly in character with the sort of beings they are supposed to be.
