Woke up today to the total reset of the "Champion Points (CP) drive character progression after Level 50. You earn Champion Points by gaining normal XP, so doing things like quests, exploration, dungeons, fighting and crafting. At first you will earn Champion Points very quickly, but as you get more and more the rate at which you can earn them will go down."

So what or who do I thank for this?

you could thank the bug that needed a reset to fix
you could thank the developer of said bug
but you could partly thank yourself for not seeing the heads up banner on the top of the forumscreen so you could prepare for the reset

Actually, I'm grateful for the free reset, because I ended up making some changes when I was redistributing my CPs. So it was a hassle, but it was also a bit of a blessing in disguise (for me).

Be glad you only had CP reset. I had a character stripped of armour, jewelry, weapons, vampirism and skill points as well!

I just found myself gawping at the CP screen for far too long yesterday and I hope that does not happen again.

CP resets (and other kinds of resets) happen sometimes in MMOs. I've had to re-do my characters in WoW, STO, ESO... yeah, it can be annoying (especially if you have lots of alts). But it happens.

Usual reasons are - changes in how the skill/CP/whatever system works (like when we got CP2.0 in the first place), major alterations to skills (so they give you a free reset, since a patch changed what they do; it would be unfair to make you pay for it), and similar things.

In this case, it was due to a CP bug introduced by the Armory system. It screwed up some people's CP totals (giving them more), so to clear that bug properly they did a full reset for everyone. Yeah, re-applying your CP is a bit annoying.

But like I said - it happens in MMOs sometimes. Just like nerfs & buffs happen. Just part of the genre. /shrug

I agree with @Kiralyn2000, these things happen. I tend to be pretty philosophical about such things, and that's as someone with 31 characters needing resets, the other 17 not having any CPs thankfully!

It was a lot of work, but I had CP assignments on some characters that were outdated and this saved me the 3000 gold on some characters. Sadly, I made a mistake when assigning, so I ended up spending 3000 gold to fix it.
