how to stop auto-login?

i have an account on the EU server, but i just started one on the NA server. when i log in through the launcher, which is through steam, when it gets to the login screen of eso, it automatically logs into whatever the last server i had set. is there a way to stop it on that login page, so that if i want to switch servers, then i can? instead of having to log all the way in, then back out and switch.

Maybe you have to change that through something on steam?

I haven't ever used steam, so I don't know how that really works. But I can't remember anything anywhere in the ESO login setup where you can auto-login like that.

You might check the usersettings.txt file to see if it's saving the login there - though if that's it, I'm not sure how you make it NOT save it?

A lot of Steam versions of games with accounts & logins, use your Steam account as the login. So they bypass the regular login screen automatically. Not sure if there's any way to change that or turn it off, though. Aside from running the game directly from it's folder, rather than from Steam. If you can even do that with ESO these days.

You can create an icon on desktop to just double click to start game, but it will indirectly go via Steam in all cases. You just spare a few clicks by doing that.

As for that with server, sorry, don't know. The only thing I know is that under the options (there is the wheel symbol at each step of the login, check them all), it is possible to manage specifically how the game shall start. Maybe it's there somewhere.

I'm out of my mind, feel free to leave a message... PC/NA

Might be worth asking "how do I switch servers more easily" on the Steam ESO forums. Might be more people who know the details there.

I would suggest searching Steam for the answer and maybe sending them a message asking how. I tried Google but it did not yield an answer. This would not be an issue with most games.

Even games where I created an icon on the desktop I am still automatically logged in when I use that icon.

I opened the usersettings.txt and changed the following lines as shown below:

    SET RememberAccountName "0"
    SET AccountName ""
    SET LastPlatform ""
    SET LastRealm ""

then set the file read-only so now it's not saving any of that. When I open the game screen now, there's no server shown, but clicking on SERVER at top left opens to the choice dialog to select either NA or EU, then it's just a matter of typing in which account name and password.

But if steam manages the login as Kiralyn said above, then I don't know that doing what I did would help OP.

You can launch the game directly from the executable in the install folder. Then it always asks for a login. The only time you have to run the Steam launcher is when it needs updated.

It's a little hard to find. Kind of buried in a long directory tree.

(wherever your steam install location is)\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Zenimax Online\The Elder Scrolls Online\game\client\eso64.exe

It won't work if the client needs updated. May have been that.

No, there is no way to do that. It's still probably quicker than the non-steam launcher, since non steam people can't autologin nor save their password, so they have to do that each time. The "last server used" thing also applies there, so they still have to remember to switch the server, though they can do it before logging in, if they remember to check.

hmm, yes i see what you mean. not too user friendly either, the non-steam launcher. one option is when i log out, i can set the server i want for the next time in the login screen. but such preparation...not sure that's humanly possible

That's what I do-- switch to the server I want to start with next session before I shut down the game this session. I sometimes forget to do that, but it works well when I do remember.

I use Steam. When I did play a character on EU, I would do it after playing on NA. I would edit the usersettings.txt file after logging out for the end of the day. One line is all that is needs to be edited:
    SET IsServerSelected "1"

Change the value to 0 and you will be prompted to pick your server upon logging in.
    PC-NA / PC-EU
    ID @IsharaMeradin
    Characters NA
Verin Jenet Eshava - Dark Elf Warden (main)
Nerissa Valin - Imperial Necromancer (secondary)
    Lugsa-Lota-Stuph - Argonian Sorcerer
    Leanne Martin - Breton Templar
    Latash Gra-Ushaba - Orc Dragonknight
    Ishara Merádin - Redguard Nightblade
Arylina Loreal - High Elf Sorcerer
    Sasha al'Therin - Nord Necromancer
Paula Roseróbloom - Wood Elf Warden
    Ja'Linga - Khajiit Arcanist

    Characters EU
Shallan Veil - Wood Elf Warden

    ID @IsharaMeradin-Epic
    Characters NA
    Ja'Sassy-Daro - Khajiit Nightblade
    Natash af-Ishara - Redguard Warden
Shallan Radiant Veil - Dark Elf Arcanist

    Same here...it is beyond annoying
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

Once you're in the game it's exactly the same as playing without steam.
Differences between steam and non steam:
    1. Steam is tied to your steam account vs Non-steam has its own launcher
    2. Steam authentication goes through steam, so the two times a year steam's auth server goes down for a couple of hours you can't log in.
    3. Because steam uses the steam's auth, the rest of the time it autologs you in, whereas the non-steam client requires you to enter your password every time. Switch from NA to EU? reenter password. Steam just switches server right away

    1 is personal preference.
2 is a + for the stand alone client
3 is a + for steam. Even with the annoyance of the subject of this thread, steam login is still quicker overall.

Those are the only differences between the two, it's the exact same client and game and servers otherwise. Once you are logged in ESO doesn't care how you got there. If the steam auth server goes down after you logged in you can stay logged in and switch characters and ESO doesn't care. Logging in is the only difference. Whether the risk of missing a few hours a year is worth having to type in your password every time is up to you.

Eh well.... I never could get logged in through steam. I bought the game on steam due to a friend's advice. I spent nearly a MONTH trying to get logged into this game through steam. Not one time.... and steam "support" was totally useless. At that point I bought a new copy of the game from the ZOS store, and logged in immediately without issue using the eso64.exe shortcut on my taskbar.

Far as I'm concerned steam is garbage, and I wish I didn't have to log into Skyrim using it. I would LOVE to find Skyrim on GOG....

Steam is one account per game. Once you log into ESO with Steam, that client is locked to that account.

I understand that people who bought their ESO game via Steam during a certain time can log in without steam as they mention. However, if the game was purchased after that certain time it cannot be done. Probably something in the agreement between Zenimax and Steam changed.

Someone posted a workaround though. Buying a base game copy of ESO, but not via Steam ofc, will give a Steam player the ability to login directly. Search for their thread if interested but I would also wait for the game to go on sale which I think drives the base game below 10 USD. I do not recall the details nor can I vouch that it works so you may want to google or use the forum search to find that thread.

    Good luck.

Yes and no. You can only have one ESO account per steam account. So yeah, if you run multiple accounts you don't want to have them all on steam since you'd need multiple steam accounts and that negates any minimal convenience advantage of steam. However the client itself is not locked. Go to the folder, run it and you can log in with your non steam account in the exact same exe file that steam runs.

Each way of buying the game has a minimal advantage and minimal disadvantage and they are solely related to clicking the play button and logging in to the server.
