Mirri kept resetting a dungeon boss

I was running Crypt of Hearts and was on the last boss, Ilambris-Athor and Ilambris-Zaven. Mirri kept backing out of their area so far that it reset the fight... 3 times... until I finally got her against the wall away from the doorway.

She pulled a world boss in Elsweyr once, now this. If she was not able to move that far away from me, these things wouldn't happen.

Yes. She is not smart enough to stay in the boss's home space.. or, maybe she is too smart.

"Would it kill them to run away? Well, no, I guess it wouldn't. Maybe they should try that."

In any case, I find that if she taunts the boss, or the boss chases after her, the boss needs to be taunted back.

I kept attacking him but he wouldn't stop chasing her.

Bastian did the same thing to me in the Crypt of Hearts. I ended up forbidding him to ever again "help" me in that dungeon.

Actually, I do let him help me up to, but not including, the final showdown.

This is why I have her equipped with an ice staff personally. She don't got a taunt, she uses it to dps.

Maybe the problem is with the Crypt of Hearts more than the Companions.

They'll both do that at range. Either keep the boss taunted yourself or switch them to melee.

When it happened to me with Bastian, I was tank and Bastian was DD. I was having a hard time keeping both bosses taunted at the same time, partly due to having to avoid their attack mechanics, and partly due to alternating between S&B and 2H so I could try to help take out one of the bosses. All it takes is half a second of losing taunt for the other boss to go after Bastian, step beyond their little circle, and reset the whole fight. I agree that it's really more a problem with the dungeon, because the circle you have to keep the two bosses inside of it pretty small.

Ice Staff has different percentage of health they need to be at before they try to roll away since it's a tank weapon, and range keeps them out of stupid in my experience. So it's kinda the best of both.

Mirri was using a bow. I haven't made a lot of changes to her yet because I'm waiting for her to hit level 20 to fine tune her build.

This is why I find ranged weapons very sketchy on companions. It seems good in theory until something starts chasing them and you have to chase it down yourself, wasting time. In extreme situations, they can reset bosses causing even more time loss.

I've been going with 2 hander on dps companions. If they die, at least they die in the middle of a pile of mobs so I can go clean it up.

I switched Bastion to s&b from staff and he stays alive much more often and so do I. Of course he’s wearing heavy now instead of medium, too. His taunt takes the heat off me when farming multiple bosses at the same time especially.

I had read Mirri does better with 2h or dw but haven’t got back around to her yet.

I also had planned to wait until I maxed out the companions before making gear changes, but I’m happier that I did it now.

As others have said, ice staff can be a good choice for companion ranged dps. Every other staff and the bow will let them dodge roll all over - including out to 'reset the boss' range. With an ice staff, they will favor block and be much better at holding their ground.

Mirri and Bastian just act as any ranged player : if the boss comes close, they take distance pulling it away form all the carefully placed AoE's.

Yes there's several either of them will reset at range, I always put them away for that fight. I've given Mirri a two-hander which helps with her, but have Bastian as a healer and he always resets this boss, the snake boss in Arx Corinium, the Crab in FG (he stands on the bridge), last boss of Spindleclutch (pulls her into the hallway) and plenty more I can't remember right now. I put them away rather than slotting a taunt because as a DPS I can't be arsed to keep chasing them down :D He's also managed to reset a couple of world bosses which is reaaallly embarassing...

Mirri got better once I gave her the skill that makes her invisible when her health gets slow. It usually gives the boss time to notice me again.

Gotta use some commands in order for it to work out. Press Y and right click, she should just be on "follow". Walk and stand on the other side of the room facing towards the entrance. Then Press Y and left click. Mirror should engage and now she's just gonna roll dodge inside the area.

I was going to comment on this, but seems you beat me to it. This is something that even veteran players (especially sorcs) don't know about. You can do this with all summonable pets (and especially companions), incluing sorc pets, nightblade shade, warden bear, Maw of the Infernal, etc.

Y + Right Click to set passive (a.k.a. only follow, won't attack)
Y + Left Click to attack target

If you see Mirri leaving the boss area, set to passive to get her closer to you, then set her to attack again once she's near.

    " Directing Companions in Combat

While Companions will always attempt to engage in combat when you are attacked, utilizing pet commands allows you to direct the Companion to engage with specific targets or tell them to pull back, respectively. By default, on keyboard and mouse you can do this by holding the “Y” key and left- or right-clicking, or on controller by pressing the L3+R3 buttons along with the left or right bumper.

In addition, performing a heavy attack will also cause your Companion to switch to your target."

I find that Bastian is a “stand your ground” type while Mirri, even when equipped with melee weapons and directed with pet commands, will continually roll dodge and keep backing away while fighting, dragging the boss (or enemies) with her.

I guess it’s just in her nature as an archer, even if you take her bow away :D

To be fair, not a lot of people do. And even those that do know about it rarely use it. ZOS could make this a lot easier to understand in-game. Even under the Keybinds, there's a "Command Pet" but it doesn't show anything aside from "Y"; it doesn't show passive/aggressive.

That said, there is a Help section category for it in-game. Which would also indicate to me, if not also to ZOS, that few people read the help section in-game. (While I realise after posting this that it could be viewed as belittling, it's more meant to imply that ZOS could, or perhaps should, find a better way to display important information like this rather than in a menu that few people use/read)
