They drop from the first boss...here is the rub if it's one where only the top 12 get loot (like a Dolmen for example) if you don't get loot rights, you will not get your tickets.

Argh, seriously? That's really cruel, especially to people who aren't able to play every day because of having to go out of town for a couple of days or something.

Best way to be sure is make sure you pick an out-of-the-way boss that's easy to kill. If you see a crowd of people waiting for a boss in a delve, public dungeon, at a dolmen, etc., better to leave and go find a different one. Maybe do a dungeon boss first, so you'll be guaranteed looting privileges.

Of course, once you've got your tickets, that's no longer an issue. I didn't get looting privileges on a dolmen boss, but on the next dolmen I did, and got the gold coffer from it. (I'd already got my tickets before that.)

I agree with finding an out of the way boss to fight. I usually do events like this on a low level character so I'm very unlikely to out DPS other people around, but most people tend to cluster around a handful of easy to reach bosses so there's plenty with fewer people.

Yesterday I just went back to Blackwood because that's where my character already was and I've got all the bosses marked on the map already. There were a few other people at each one but I don't think we ever hit 12 players.

^^ This is correct. ZOS should fix this though, as you should still get your tickets even if you did not make the DPS cut. Another huge downside to this method is that tanks and healers are almost never able to get loot.

But I thought you only got tickets when you loot the boss, so if you can’t loot the boss, how do you miss out on tickets?

From what I understood, it's the first boss you kill that would give you the chance to loot it. If you can't loot it because you aren't among the top 12 dps, you get nothing at all. Only the first boss you help killing gives you the chance to get the tickets. If you miss them, you're SOL.

It might be a good idea not to try to get tickets from a world boss with lots of other players around. Besides, I believe dragons are the one exception that allows all players who contributed to the slaughter to loot the corpse. So as awful as they are, dragons might be "safe" tickets.

As it happens, I had decided to do the dailies in Northern Elsweyr as part of this event-- daily delve, daily world boss, and daily dragons, so 3 different types of Dremora Plunder Skulls. And as luck would have it, I decided to help kill a dragon first, since there was one already being fought. There were well over a dozen players there, and I got there late and barely got a chance to land a blow, but I was still able to loot its corpse and get my tickets. Yay!

I've also been doing the Mages Guild, Fighters Guild, and Undaunted dailies as part of this event, but I think I'll stay away from those until after I've already received my tickets, since it's too easy to get out-DPSed by a large crowd of AOE/DOT-spamming players, thereby putting ones daily tickets at risk.

If you don't do enough damage to loot the boss, it drops nothing for you.

But that doesn't mean you can't get the tickets for the day. You can just go do a different boss, or the same boss again.

The only condition that needs to be met is if you can loot the boss. And the only way you lose you chance at tickets is if you do enough damage and then don't loot the boss and leave the tickets on the corpse.

Failing to do enough damage on the first boss you see isn't going to make you lose your tickets for the day.

I want to believe you, but I don't know whether it's safe to believe you. :)

I've never missed out on my tickets due to not being able to loot a corpse-- well, except for one time during an Undaunted event when a DD ran ahead in a dungeon and killed the final boss before the rest of the group could get anywhere near it, but that's because it was so close to the dailies reset time that I had no time left to run another dungeon.

But too many players have said they didn't get their tickets no matter how many more bosses they killed after the first one, so I'm not sure who to believe.

No it is the first boss you kill, though there are only a few situations where this matters, still best to do a solo delve boss or group dungeon if you can't top DPS.

That is incorrect, they drop from the first boss you kill, if you can't loot it, those tickets are gone.

I've been soloing dolmens during the event - or starting them solo anyway. This isn't bragging. I'm not a 100k dps trial gear wearing elitist. When this happens I'm usually still alone when the dolmen ends or there might be 3-4 people who showed up in the middle of the fight. Not enough to make me lose my drop. But if you want a guaranteed drop, you could try killing a dragon as your first daily monster. Everyone gets to loot a dragon.
