Only reason to have Win 11 if you skipped Win 10 ... and in that case I still probably would use Win10 for years to come.

Anyone who skipped Windows 10 almost certainly won't have a machine that is compatible with Windows 11 - at least, not without various registry hacks.

I'd be genuinely interested in those who have upgraded to Windows 11 explaining precisely what improvements they've seen since doing so. What was their motivation in doing the upgrade, beyond simply responding to MIcrosoft's latest offer of the new shiny thing for nothing?

It basically feels like Win 10 but with a better layout for the settings menus, and prettier UI. The multi-layout for snap screens has come in helpful when multitasking several windows at once. You can grid up to four windows, and there are several layouts.

It doesn't feel at all like a new OS, in fact I think it IS Win 10 but with a new coat of paint. Hence why it's free I guess. There is no way I would have paid a dime for it, but I found no reason to NOT upgrade to it either. It's been working flawlessly for four days now.

I would be more interested in hearing from people who spend $1000 upgrading to the latest smartphones for essentially a slightly better camera every year or two (that still pales compared to an actual dedicated DSLR camera).

Thanks @danno8, nothing there for me then! It confirms what I've read elsewhere, that it's basically a re-skinned Windows 10. The mystery is why if that's all it is it requires a new or nearly new computer to run it, unless of course the intention is to make their money off the companies that sell new computers with Windows 11 pre-installed!

As for smartphones, I agree. I bought my first one when I retired at the end of 2014 (having had a company phone until then) and bought a better one this year for about £100, with a contract which still only costs £8 per month, probably less than a quarter of what my adult children pay for theirs.

Something to consider for those who are worried (or convinced) Microsoft will disable ESO on older versions of Windows to force an upgrade: the Xbox Series X has been out for about a year now, but it's still possible to play ESO on an Xbox One.

If they haven't forced an upgrade on hardware they're selling it seems unlikely they'll force one for a free software update.

pretty sure they arent going to destroy the usability of the programs of basically everyone using windows 10. just a feeling.

I'm going to put windows 11 on one computer because I will have customers that switch to eleven and I will need to know how to help them when things go wrong.
I don't want to go to eleven because I don't want to use a Microsoft account to log in. I know there is a work around but it isn't as simple as it was with windows 10.
Reading about eleven mostly it seems a way for Microsoft to garner more information and behavior patterns from people that they can then sell to interested companies. That is why the upgrade is free. They get to see everything you do basically on any device you do it on.
Back to the topic I still have a windows 7 computer that can play the game. I don't use it because the performance isn't up to par but that is a processor issue and not a platform issue. I fire it up when I want to scan negatives or slides because I can't find a good driver for my scanner. The scanner works great so I don't see the need to upgrade. For normal everyday scans I can use any computer and one of my all in one printers.
Microsoft is very good about supporting older platforms after new stuff is dropped. When they do end support that usually doesn't mean much until the third party companies start making changes. Microsoft is also very hands off on ESO. They bought the company not to control existing content but because they thought content in development was a good investment.

Agreed. Why would they force an OS on people when it's probably only compatible with about 10% of machines? That's quite apart from issues of compatibility with software like games, of course.

With Win 11 you can switch to a local account at any time. Same as with any other Windows.

Install makes it seem you need an account but with Win 11 pro you don't and with Home you can trick it, or just make the account and switch to a local account later.

I hadn't heard about that (I've not really looked into Windows 11 yet) but that doesn't sound appealing. Even if I didn't mind the monitoring I don't want to have to log in every time I start up the computer.

There is a work around. You just have to be aware of it. This is just part of my own personal war of thinking on all things opt out should be default and opt in should be what we choose to change to. It shouldn't be 'click here if you don't want twenty E-mails a day' hidden on a page or in a user agreement somewhere. Should be click here if you want E-mails but that is a whole other battle I will never win.

LOL...does anyone actually think they are not being tracked right now, and why would using a older/newer OS be any different? If you are online you are being tracked. Pretty sure no matter what OS you are using there will still be a compatibility mode to run REALLY old software if needed, but one OS generation difference will not cause an issue with software compatibility. Looks like Micro$oft is having more problems with the performance hits to gaming rigs than forcing people to upgrade.

I know people still using windows 7 without issues, they don't kick you off based on your operating system.

I think they said its 2024 or 2025 before windows 10 will stop getting updates.

October 14th, 2025 is when windows 10 will no longer be supported

If it turns out the same as Windows 7 that is when it stops receiving free monthly support, but it will be possible to buy extended support. Also, it's highly likely that 0patch - which already covers Windows 10 - will continue to be available.
