Blackwood is kinda boring

I really enjoyed Morrowind, Summerset, and Elsewyr. All those zones were super cool, and the quests were pretty interesting. Greymoor seemed like it took a bit of a step back, but I still enjoyed it decently. Western Skyrim and Markarth seemed like pretty small zones, but at least the Blackreach was fancy. But the quests weren't quite as interesting as those previous 3 zones I mentioned.

Now I'm playing Blackwood, and not gonna lie, the zone is pretty drab, and lots of the quests are boring. There was one quest with the masked performers, and that was really good. But the rest I'm just like "okay I get it, someone is doing yet another ritual and you need me to save people, great". Just no epicness or purpose behind getting invested.

I give props for doing the companion system. It's not really something that changes my game because the overland content is laughably easy anyways, but at least I get someone to provide some banter every now and then lol.

I guess that's all I have to say. Zenimax I hope you guys pick it up on the effort for the next big zone. ESO was my main game during Morrowind/Summerset/Elsewyr but now with the zones getting kinda lamer, and the cyrodil lag forever being really, really bad on my Xbox, I'm now drifting into random RPGs like Dragon's Dogma, and Kingdom Come Deliverance to really scratch that RPG itch I always have.

Leyawin is gorgeous but the rest of the zone is just dull.

I enjoyed one or two of the side quests but the main story was awful. Teaming up with Eveli I just felt like I was hanging out with a 12 year old kid who's not too bright. The Imperials on their High Council (or whatever its called).... I don't remeber a thing about them. They were just instantly forgettable.

I can't believe the end of year dlc is entirely in the Deadlands. I don't think I'll bother with it.

And I'm really sick of the drip feed on motifs and furnishing plans.

Anyways I know I'm being really negative but I'm just being honest. I was really looking forward to this years Imperial dlcs and theyve been a massive let down.

I love Blackwood, so yes, there's something for everyone (I really disliked Western Skyrim, Markarth was marginally better). I enjoyed the quest lines in Blackwood (which is a good thing, since I'm doing the full 26 quests on 2 accounts, both PC megaservers to get Water's Edge for gold), I love the area, planning to move out of Vivec on everyone.

This is what I feared with Blackwood... Blackwood is successful but empty... There are things to tell but what?
Where Colovia would have a lot to tell, Blackwood is nothing for me.

Blackwood's storyline only stands up because there are special protagonists in it. Protagonists who could not have been on Blackwood. A choice that always seems strange to me.

I find it better than Western Skyrim, however. Western Skyrim is a huge mess: I was expecting it from the base game ... There was huge potential and in the end, we saw absolutely nothing. The only successful thing was Gray Host.

I don't think Blackwood is boring but definitely lacks of content. I hope that's only effect of all this pandemic chaos with remote work. I also hope that Microsoft will throw a bag of money for hiring more people, because sometimes it looks like they just don't have enough manpower.

I did first two quests in Blackwood and can't think of a good reason to go back there. Tried one of the portals but I was only one in there. Got the companion, have yet to take her out.

    Not buying another dlc ever.

I enjoyed Blackwood. Though not a fan of the Oblivion portals, they beat the heck out of Harrowstorms as far as I'm concerned. Navigation was not bad (not a lot of 'cliff blocking' like Wrothgar has). The Imperial and Argonian NPCs are pleasant to deal with (unlike the Dunmer in MW or the Altmer in Summersett). I found the main questline engaging - especially once the nature of the Four Amibitions became apparent (by contrast, I found the main questline in Western Skyrim and The Reach to be uninteresting and very forgettable). I didn't mind traveling with Eveli (while I disliked dealing with Lyris, Sai and Tharn in the other Chapters). I enjoyed the side quests in Blackwood in general as well. I also very much like the companion system and look forward to it evolving into even a better addition to the game.

I prefer any original zone in the game to any Chapter/DLC zone in the game but, of the Chapter/DLC zones, I rank Blackwood as number two behind Murkmire.

Went in, grabbed companions, left. I'll get round to it eventually on my new main. Now if we had a class change token I'd change my old mains class like a shot and be doing it now.

Is it empty because the portals are instanced?
So they raised the floor and lowered the ceiling. Except the ceiling has spikes in it now and the floor is also lava.

@Hurbster no. portals are not instanced. moreover, you can teleport to a friend/guildie who is already inside, but after 3-4 weeks when the community had consumed all the easy overland content -- there are too few reasons to return back to Blackwood.
Deadlands are not much attractive as it takes quite a lot of time to reach the final boss and wait for it to respawn for kinda mediocre rewards. Furnishing plans are hard to farm due to the lack of locations to farm them and quite an abysmal drop rate. However, some of my friends are still doing Blackwood dailies, but checking guildies locations list - they are few.

The only word Id dispute in your thread title is `kinda', Blackwood has a predictable lacklustre story, forgettable npc's, uninspiring geography with way too many invisible walls, and a companion system mechanic that falls short of its potential.

In comparison with previous chapters its a disappointment.

As is content feels rather thinly spread for a full chapter. But I have to admit I rather have "too big" map if alternative is huge inaccessible filler mountains or a tiny map with cliffs and invisible wall ridges everywhere.

After few years every open world zone is boring, because you can clearly see the same pattern everywhere + open world is absurdly casual in ESO. For me Craglorn is still the best zone and still it has so much potential, mainly because it is a little bit more challenging than the rest of the map.

I mean it's only natural that quests at some point feel repetitive as there are only so many kind of stories and twists you can add. If you played other RPGs it's naturally harder to find something novel.

Its funny for me its not the zone that is making it boring.. it's the story or lach thereof in it.
Blackwood main story is below mediocre and the side quests are even worse. Normally I would play on multiple chars (3) now I've completed the zone on just one, that was enough. No reason to be there.

I played Blackwood for nearly 2 hours and then quit. The first delve that appears in front of you when you fast travel there is pretty damn cool. Then the rest of the overworld is just an empty swamp with little to no delves or caves. I legit couldn't find anything interesting to do other than submit to questing... which is something I hate because we all know we're going to win. We're going to save the person in trouble. We will be the hero. zzzzzzzz
Edit: I didn't bother to do any quests because of this btw

Everything about blackwood seems rushed, the map is boring, the storyline was boring, the dynamic world event portals where underwhelming and lacked decent rewards.

It has really put me off buying future content because for the price they charged for blackwood was scandalous considering the quality of the product.

I like the zone but there was not enough quests to discover in it and the main story is really boring. I'm fed up to see the same scheme repeat again and again.

"OH NO ! Another epic/divine plot that imply the death of all Tamriel if it succeed ! (well sometimes it's well done but in Greymoor and Blackwood it's not.) Oh no, a traitor in our ranks ! Oh yes, a lost artifact (in a human shape this time) that can help us to one shot the last boss ! Etc..."

And companions are just meh, nor bad or good but we simply could have had something far more interesting.

Please next year do something more interesting, like akaviri remnants ploting in the shadows in eastern Morrowind to turn Telvannis mages against each other, hoping to weaken the zone for a future invasion (yes, one more invasion but at least it's not from another daedra or ultra epic/divine monster.) And with one of the east islands between Tamriel and Akavir as the Q4 zone, to finish them.

Or southern Alik'r, with many politic plots and why not the Yokudans remnants lurking in the shadows, hoping to put the hand on this "distant colony" , thinking that the Redguards are still pure yokudans citizens that could be exploited. Like a TESO version of the independances wars we've got in our history.

Well anything but another Daedra/Vampire/Werewolf/Cult wanting to destroy the reality.

Overuse of apocalyptic events makes them boring and underwhelming: Daedric lords (twice), Dragons, Vampires and WWs planning to screw up Nirn entirely or just large parts of it just doesn't cut it anymore. Similar quest lines for 4 years in a row is already jumping the shark. They should make more unique plots localized to the zone where the Soul Shriven is an actor but not the linchpin of the action. Saving the world twice a year is already tiring :)

The zone has far fewer quests and unique locations compared to other large DLCs like Orsinium and Morrowind, world bosses are easy to kill even solo - most of them died in less than one minute and none was really dangerous. Oblivion portals give very little XP and you can loot at just one point (2 if you do the secret boss), even compared to base game dolmens and bosses within are also very weak, with the exception of one of the intermediate ones that just spins and one-shots everyone with little counter-play.

I bought Pantherfang Chapel, furnished. It costs about USD 130 in real money, converted into 17500 crowns. But you get some unique new paintings. That's pretty exciting.

Blackwood is a wonderful chapter. I really liked the location, I really liked the architecture and atmosphere. Hard and interesting new trial, usable relics. Yes, I stayed cold to my companions, but for some reason it doesn't upset me.
Blackwood's problems are exactly the same as the rest of the game. Casual overland and questing which is similar to a visual novel rather than an RPG. Previously, I didn't pay much attention to this, since the plot was interesting. Even in Elsweer there was so much new and interesting lore that I forgave him the second part of the main quest.

The way I look at it is by considering which zones I go to when levelling up a new character - basically those zones that are worth playing again.

    And there are only two:

Wrothgar: I still take my mains there from time to time to beat up the world bosses.
Summerset: there's enough "reasonable" content to keep me interested, and I do like the Augur of the Obscure ;)

None of the others is worth going back to, none has enough content. I go back when there is a special event, take the bonuses, and never go back for another year.

I've even "encouraged" newer characters to go exploring by giving them all the surveys for a zone, but what's the point when I have a main that can already go everywhere and doesn't have to waste time "exploring"? And even when I do get these characters to collect from surveys they are only filling in the map and maybe doing some dailies or side quests, not the main story lines because they just aren't worth it.

Finished Blackwood within a week of release (not rushing!) and remember next to nothing about any of the quests.
Very curious about this performer one I keep seeing mentioned; may have to look it (specifically) see what I missed.
Think this is the first time it happens actually. So yeah, um, maybe running an alt through something will stick?

I enjoyed Blackwood. Spent the first couple of hours in there just riding around, going round the coasts & then interior. Do like the way the scenery changes.

Leyowiin & Gideon are great. Like the mix of argonian/murkmire design also.

Side quests I found mainly interesting & worth doing.

Companions - well, they are what *you* make them. I quite like them but would prefer a Khajiit of dubious morals.

My main gripe is the main quest. I thought that what they did with the Ambitions was original, but am a bit tired of Daedric Big Bads that just aren’t.

And don’t get me started on Eveli. Annoying, irritating, prattling on, overly ‘perky’ and apparently needing to go over what has just happened every single time.(Is this really necessary? Do people have difficulty remembering what is going on?) Bah.
