Skills are Confusing Me

Wanakanabe
I just signed up a few days ago and I am currently only level 18, I am a Templar and want to do a Stamina build but most everything in my tree is for Magicka. I dual wield so I have been putting all my points into that because they are Stamina related. Also on my attributes, I have been running heavy health so I won't be to squishy, currently I am about even Stam/Health... Am I doing it wrong? Armor drops seem pretty far and few between as well, I have done so many quests and my gloves and boots are still level 9.

Alot of skill morphs have an option for stamina. Stam builds usually wear medium armor with most if not all points going into stamina. Medium armor gives bonuses to weapon damage and stamina regen.

Don't worry too much about where your attribute points are spent while you are still such a low level, it can be a good idea to make yourself less squishy while still learning everything. Later on you'll receive an attribute respec scroll, which you can use at any time, or you can visit a rededication shrine in a major city at any time and pay to swap attributes around. Most people recommend min-maxing since it is the most effective in terms of damage output, so if you want to do that I'd say invest completely in stamina once you've leveled up some and gotten the scroll. If you play this game for the questing and other overland content though, there's really no need to min-max.

Similarly, the type of armor you wear while leveling isn't too important, or even the fact that you out level it and may not find replacement pieces for a bit. If you want you can ask in a city for someone to craft training armor appropriate to your level, and you'll usually get a response, especially if you offer some coin (maybe 1 or 2k for a full set, though some people would do it for free) and the materials to craft it. Once again, do note that the optimal armor weight for stamina damage dealers is currently medium, though that may change to mixed medium and light next patch, so I'd recommend you begin wearing a mix of heavy and medium, or even all three, to begin leveling those armor skill lines if you want to eventually play that way.

Finally, yes the templar (and most other classes) skills start off as magicka, which is very confusing for most new players. If you unlock and slot one of those skills, you'll eventually be able to choose between two morphs, which for some skills allows you to pick a stamina morph. The easiest way to pick the correct skills for stamina *should* be through the skills advisor. Right now it's probably set to "Templar Initiate" for you, but you can change the settings depending on the roll you want to play and stamina damage dealer should be one of the options, though I'm not 100% sure. The skills advisor isn't used for optimal damage dealing, so if you want to see what others recommend search "Beginner Stamplar Build" online and make sure whatever website or video you find is updated for Blackwood (the most recent update) or Waking Flame (the one that will go live in a couple of weeks). Alternatively, if you want to get an idea of the skills and their morphs for yourself you can find them here: https://eso-hub.com/en/skills/templar, then just click on each skill tree to see all the skills, morphs, and passives.

Your stamina skills will come from your weapon skill trees. Bow, dual wield, and two-handed all need stamina. Sword and board uses stamina too, but that is usually a tank (health and stamina) build.

It's tough to get a full set of gear before you outlevel what you already have.

Crafted sets about every 10 levels are my preferred option for leveling up characters.

Better gear will add more survivability and damage. Two full 5-piece set bonuses are substantial. You can wear multiple different sets at a time, mix and match.

Stamina Templar always will have some reliance on several magicka skills, but you will get more stamina morphs as you go.

Best defense is a good offense for damage dealing characters. Just have enough health to survive a bit, the rest into attack resources so you can kill things faster. Higher total stamina pool also translates into increased stam-based damage.

Use food for extra HP if you need it. Crusty bread can be found all over, it's decent enough for low level characters.

If you belong to a good guild, ask if any crafters can give you a hand. Make a few sets of training gear 10 or so levels apart. Make you blue food for stamina. Yes, you outlevel stuff quickly, but anything can be reused for an alt at some point.

All classes were initially intended to be played as Magicka, hence most class skills are Magicka. Over the years, most classes received Stamina morphs for their skills, though most base skills remain magic based. The Templars unfortunately got the short end of the stick and have the fewest Stamina morphs out of all classes. The only physical class skills you can use are:
    • Biting Jabs (Puncturing Strikes morph)
    • Binding Javelin (Javelin morph)
    • Power of the Light (Backlash morph)
    • Ultimates, which scale off your highest stat
    • Ritual of Retribution
    • Repentance and the Stamina morph of the Rune Focus (these skills are just for healing and sustain)
Stamina classes normally rely on weapon skills and Fighters Guild skills. Another option would be to specialize in Magicka until you hit max level and respec to Stamina, a lot of players prefer this method as it's faster.
