Are you happy with the direction of ESO over the past year?

ESO has made a lot of changes over the past year. CP 2.0, companions, group sizes, testing in Cyrodiil and they seem to have left the forums pretty divided. So I ask you? Was the game better a year ago? and if so why?

I have my own opinions but I'd like to hear what others think. Please note this is not meant to be a bashing or Praise ZOS thread, I'm mostly curious about how the forum playerbase feels about the direction of the changes.

Some stuff was good some was so so.
Companions imo are a nice addition yet they could do with some improvement.
Regarding CP 2.0 I will just say I liked the old system more.

The game wasn't better nor worse a year ago,it was just different.
While I must say, before CP 2.0 I did enjoy fighting and doing dungeons more than I do now.
    Total ESO playtime: 8325 hours

I am very confused with the true voice of us the players. We have the PTS for a reason. Live testing in Cyrodiil crossed a weird boundary, and I don't like it at the end of the day. I also really dislike the new trend of binding certain motifs to treasure map/leads and how long it was bugged. I am sad that ZOS has ignored the need for additional character slots, additional inventory options, whether that be more bank space, more storage, more pets...very important things are being glazed over and it's frustrating. But hey....we have an in-game way to earn a small amount of crowns through endeavors, because they took away most free costumes/pets from daily rewards...give a little, take a little, give a little...

    Other:

Performance being addressed was announced, but we've yet to see the dividends of that announcement. Seems to have just really been a ploy to get us to be a bit more quiet as pertains to issues, them probably feeling like we've given them something to chew on.

Am I enjoying playing? Sure. But, my progressive trial guild doesn't enjoy being stuck at vSO (our current plateau, though we did beat vAS) due to the poison bug mechanic plaguing groups as of late. How is that not a priority considering it is end game content?

PvP, this back and forth with proc testing is destroying the consistent players who have established builds/sets NOT being abused by the meta, but being targeted because outcrys of people getting deleted by them.

How about the load times into and out of zones? How is this still an issue? Character loads that take 5 - 10 minutes just to get into game. Even during off peak times. Unacceptable.

It's not worse, or better. It's literally par for course.

I hate to say I'll keep playing, but when I've invested 7 years into characters and an MMO, building achievements, gear collections, etc., (and it being my favorite franchise outside of LotR), kind of hard to stop playing. Especially considering the new LotR MMO got nixed... Fml.

There are positives. The community of players. The content that does work in 4 and 12 man groups. The events (when they do work), especially Halloween. I enjoy the core part of the game. But, some of this stuff still going on really baffles me.

Content is a hard pass for sure, companions, weak stories etc.

Cp, hybridisation of stats and such changes are good imo, so it's like always a mixed bag.

This fits the bill pretty well for me.

    I like the antiquity
I like that you can collect sets and reconstruct them

CP system I'm pretty meh about.. It's not what I hoped and thankfully not as bad as I feared.

Two things I'm worried about is the volatile balance changes and I hope Zos begin to surprise and wow us again with new releases. Embrace the artist within.

No. I don`t like their "focus on horizontal progression". They nerfed CP very much. After 1000 Cp progression became useless. Also I disappointed that they nerfed proc sets to the ground for magicka characters. 6500 SD is nonsense.

I like most of the changes they made, but I do not care one bit for PvP. Love the companions, and most of CP 2.0. Love seeing higher CP players, and wish the CP-system wasn't capped at 3600 CP. As I like being able to know I can go further, making it truly endless. So far I've only once seen a 3600 CP player in-game, so it won't affect many players, but it would give the idea of CP being endless.

I'd make the entire green CP tree into passives, this way this branch gets a vertical progression for non-gameplay bonusses. So that it is worth leveling CP, or having high CP. While keeping the other two trees as horizontal progression, as those affect gameplay. And I'd change the "sta/mag on kill" to "sta/mag on helped kill", so it promotes working in groups. As it is an MMO afterall.

And for the love of god, I hope they stop balancing things around PvP, because PvP is never balanced anyways. As they are destroying PvE while doing so. Like the re-vampire, anti-tank changes, and the SD/WD set requirements. Just to name a few examples.

The Good: Personally, I love the changes to CP! This is the first time I've ever considered it generally better to play in Cp campaigns since.. well... ever! I also very much enjoy the fact that vertical progression is very limited after a while. I enjoy trying out new ideas and having a breadth of choices is much better than a depth of choices in this regard. It also puts focus where it belongs - on mastering the game itself. No one writes books about Candyland. After the age of five I think pretty much everyone realizes it trivial and skill-less. Yet after hundreds of years people are still studying chess. Good games should be the same way. Technically finite possibilities but with enough complexity that the only way to make good moves is to learn and understand. And even then one can always be surprised.

One a side note, about two years ago we hit a depth of the tank-met in PvP the likes of which has never been seen before. We've finally started working our way out of this pit. For the most part I'm glad to see set rebalances and some mechanics going the way they are. We still have a way to go. Atm the game is just too explosive. Healing is skyhigh, damage is through the roof. These numbers are just too wild for the network latency of the game currently. I think we need to consider better options like avoiding stacked healing and then slowly reduce damage and healing power to a sensible level so that fights can last more than one or two seconds but also don't drag on forever when large groups roll into town.

The Bad: There are many skills that have been changed or outright removed from the game over the last two or three years. Many of these skill were changed based on numbers balanced in an equation. As a hobbyist game dev myself I understand why standards are important. But they need to be the place where you START to balance things. Not where you end. Too many unique or fun aspects of the game have been removed and I see several more on there way next patch. Some skills have been simply nerfed into oblivion but because they show a green light on a spreadsheet somewhere they are just left to languish. Between wild balance swings and un-requested changes to skills (or perhaps requested but still unwarranted) we've seen a lot of really cool ideas simply vanish into thin air. As a DK main since basically the beginning I've watched a TON of really fun and cool features about the class just get outright removed. Rather than apply a bit of reasoning they simply deleted aspects of their skills or completly changed the numbers in such a way that they simply lack the original vision and concept and instead are just number placeholders. This trend has slowed lately but I look on to each new set of patch notes with dread because of the past.

The Ugly: Performance is just gross. Ultimately I don't really care what anyone says about balance right now. Who could possibly judge what is too strong or too weak with the way the game runs these days?! I'll take all the nerfs in the world if I could just get to see my skills fire consistently during primetime. We should be excited to log on during peak hours and events. Instead, many of us dread it. Or simply skip it outright.

Even PvE isn't safe these days. Lately I've been getting wrecked by overland mobs on occasion because I just can't get skills to work. Speaking of overland content... actually my post is long enough. I'll just say that PvP is literally the only content I find interesting enough to bother with anymore.

Well, I won't go into a rant, so I'll just say I play 10% of the content I used to. Combat changes over the last couple of years have pretty much bleed the entertainment value dry. Gone are the old "Wow!!" moments. The beautiful artwork has been littered with mundanity.

I am unsatisfied with how the current content update formula is affecting quality of content released,

I would be happy with an update 3 times or even just twice year if it led to better quality in content - because we have an ever increasing feeling of zones being rushed.

problem is how do you successfully monetize that for subscription - that's a big reason why it's all split up into 4 separate updates.

Now that a few people have responded I'll give my own thoughts.

    The good:
-The stamp book and reconstruction mechanic (made farming so much easier)
-The addition of major gallop to the Cyrodiil passives a long overdue change since everyone just used addons to work around it anyway
-Nerfing Crimson into the ground (a bit of a petty one, and unfortunate for pve folks, but that set was just awful for pvp)
-bringing group queue back to BG

    The bad:
-Cyrodiil tests-the amount of tests on live servers ZOS did this year was just unacceptable. I'm sympathetic that they have a hard time with performance fixes but taking away a game mode for essentially a month without adequate compensation just felt really disrespectful
-The No-proc fiasco and its takeover of Ravenwatch
-The game-wide group size changes. Perhaps it was just perception but I noticed a severed decline in the popularity and quality of pvp after these changes were made. I know it was to benefit performance but we haven't seen much performance. It was completely unjustified in the wider world as a whole.
    -Lag

    The mixed:
-Companions- I'm indifferent to them. They seem like they could be fun but weren't developed enough. And certainly didn't justify paying for a new expansion
-CP 2.0 Another mixed bag. For pve I found it just annoying. Even with it optimized just amounted to a (small) loss in DPS. Not the end of the world but nothing to be particularly excited about either. The potential is there for pvp since it adds an interesting element to build choices but again it just seems a bit underdeveloped (although I don't play CP pvp very much so I can't talk much).
-Hybridization of armor stats and traits- As a theorycrafter I love all the armor changes and the potential for new and interesting builds especially hybrid mag and stam. As a player, a lot of the builds are starting to feel pretty much the same which isn't as fun to play.

If I had to summarizing my general feeling for the direction of the game it would be disappointment. There are a lot of interesting and potentially fun things happening but as of now they don't seem to have a lot of depth to them. In addition the pace of the changes is way too fast. The game seems in constant flux which makes me reluctant to invest in changing and upgrading builds (pve and especially pvp). It's difficult to determine if there's a plan behind a lot of the changes or if it's just throwing stuff at a wall. more communication on ZOS' part would help with that tho.

..and that was way more than I expected to write. I should say though when the game works the way it should it's amazing it just feels like it hasn't a lot lately.

I voted "Other". I'm not long enough in ESO to comment on some of the changes. But I can comment on a few things like:
    - Companions: I enjoy it. I'm happy it was added.
    - CP points: I don't know the previous version, so I can't compare, but I find the new one relatively complex.
    - Blackwood: Was a big deception. For me, it's "just" a new area. Not an expansion pack the way I understand it (based on GW2 experience in which an expansion pack is a new world with about 4 to 6 new areas and many other important features added to the game).
I'm out of my mind, feel free to leave a message... PC/NA

I dislike cp changes and endeavour system so in general I am not happy at all.
Unlike before I feel game forces lot more daily tasks on its players, and these leave less time for them to do content they might enjoy more than killing 15 enemies with class skills, doing 5 quests for chorrol or mining 8 jewelry crafting nodes. Might sound weird, but I did enjoy playing much more when there were no daily tasks providing crown store related currency.
About cp changes, grind is real yet you still need to play star slot minigame in green tree and that really, really got old fast.
If this game direction continues I might just give up at one point because I feel miserable being bombarded with additional tasks with each new patch. Wont be easy to quit since I am addicted.

I still maintain mythics were a mistake, as they will never be balanced and some are too advantageous vs. not using them.

Then there are balance changes that aren't uniform, where A is clearly stronger than B, but B is on the nerfing end and A either does not get nerfed or even gets buffed.

It’s been mixed, I love the set collection system, I’ve enjoyed mythic items but they haven’t always got their power level and acquisition right and CP is a step in the right direction but already feels a bit like it’s been forgotten about. I dislike companions and don’t think they really have a place in an MMO which already has water down content

    Not happy.

While storytelling, quests and riddles become dumbed down with every DLC, some combats turn into a AOE and instant-kill spam by the NPCs, guess to compensate some over the top classes. But these changes leave the average players behind and frustrated.

Antiquities are great, reminds me of archeology done right, lets hope ZoS doesn't suddenly decide to drop it like Blizz did their system.

Year long stories are stale and predictable, the writing has definitely gotten worse.

    CP 2.0. Sigh....slottables.

Companions - like 'em. Why has Bastion got the face of Nicolas from the Thieves Guild quests.
So they raised the floor and lowered the ceiling. Except the ceiling has spikes in it now and the floor is also lava.
