1638 penetration or 200 spell damage?

Speaking for pvp, assuming the enemy player has resistances and isn't overpenetrated.

What would be better for damage? Is 1638 pen better than 200 spell dmg against a target that has high resistances or is it too low and 200 spell dmg would be better even if the target's resistance isn't 0?

Speaking for raw dmg don't take heals into consideration.

Well, it really depend on your overall statistics. As other stated above, 1648 pen is an equivalent of 2,48% reduction, so assuming your hit would have 10000 pure dmg, the penalty would be reduced by 2,48, so instead (for example) max mitigation 5000 dmg, you will make 5248 dmg or ca. 250 dmg more.

200 DMG will give you (usually) additional unmitigated 200 dmg (250 in case of Dizzy Swing because of coef), so in worst scenario you would get half of that so 100 (125) dmg.

So the real deal here would be somewhere around 400-500 dmg to make it work, which is possible with some arena weapons or good sets.

Of course there are always options like Javelin which ignore armour... ;)

    Penetration

660 resistances equals 1% mitigation, which means 1,638 penetration is roughly a 2.48% damage increase. The Spell damage is additive to your abilities and thus doesn't have as high an impact outside ultimates which scale multiplicatively higher from your damage numbers.

    Honestly, that's hard to say.

If 1487 penetration is supposed to equate to 129 spell/wep damage per their "bonus standard" on sets, then in theory, 200 spell damage would be better than 1638 pen.

With so many people boasting 30-40k armor/resists, if you don't have the ability to hit that 15-20k penetration mark easily, its kind of moot also.

Well, since they have other mitigation, it's likely to be well over 2.48%.

On the other hand, what's typical Effective Spell Damage in PvP? If it's 8000, then 200 incremental could look a lot like 2.5%. :D Well, multiply that by 1.2 in most cases for the usual buff ...

But what I don't understand is the distinction between ultimate vs. other skill scaling? What's the difference between the two kinds of calculation?

Pen based on my calculations. Though spell damage will also boost your heals, so it shouldn't be off the table.

Your calculation is true, if your resource pool would be zero. Resource pool gives a flat bonus to your damage, same with spell damage. So if you have 1000 damage from your Resource Pool and 1000 damage from your spelldamage and you increase your overall spelldamage by 2.5%, it would increase your total damage to 2025, aka 1.25% increased damage in this case.

If the enemy has 33000 resistances and you penetrate 1638 to 31362, you will increase your overall damage by around 5.2%

To answer this question there are a ton of variables that need to be considered. Mainly, how much penetration and spell damage do you already have? And also what skills are you using? (Some skills scale directly from spell damage like living dark).

In short, I would have to say 200 spell damage is superior. Not only is it worth more from an item budget standpoint, but spell damage also boosts your healing as well as your damage, which is important in pvp.

Only reason I answered the way I did was he specifically didn't want healing brought up. If healing was thrown into the discussion the 200 spell damage for sure.
