Why do folks get so angry at trivial things....

So a couple nights ago I was hanging out on one of the more popular Discord servers and the topic of RPG's in general and TES in particular came up.

Everything was going ok until I mentioned that interview with Matt Firor talking about how he and the rest of ZoS considers ESO a Online Role Playing game instead of a MMO. The rest of the room lost their damn minds two especially started this condescending diatribe aimed towards me about how idiotic I was to think that. They continued to rant even after (Hey don't shoot the messenger) I gave them links to the interview and several articles on it.

The only thing I can figure is they were so use to shouting down folks that eso wasn't Skyrim, that their reality shattered at the mere concept of the game being a multiplayer RPG and not a MMO....that or they were just being [snip].

Our community is [snip] up.

What are you looking for here exactly…?

People can be unkind. I don’t think it represents the community as a whole. I’ve met some wonderfully kind people playing this game.

“Elitist” isn’t even the term. I know some very skilled players that are still kind and we have good times.

ESO Community is great :) There are always going to be people agreeing and disagreeing with things.
    Total ESO playtime: 8325 hours
    ESO plus status: Cancelled
    ESO currently uninstalled.

I used to work at a tropical fish shop in high school, and some hobbyists would get like that when arguing over whether this type of filtration was better than some other type of filtration, or what level of X chemical was optimal, etc. If someone had a different opinion, that person was evil. It’s just like that sometimes with hobbies. People get really invested. The Orchid Thief book by Susan Orlean is a really interesting look at this. It definitely reminded me of some people I knew, and at times reminded me a little too much of myself. So I try to be more aware now of that human tendency and tone it down when possible. :)

That interview already sparked a couple of threads here. I agree that ESO is an MMO because it is a multiplayer game on a large shared world, however the proper term is MMORPG as this isn't Eve Online or Planetside 2.

As for our community we have many great people of all skill levels. This game is probably the most friendly I've played and the few bad apples we do have don't spoil the whole bunch as badly as other games.

can you DM me this discord or any other active 1 for eso that's not super sensitive and moderated like these forums? I like to nerd out about this game in free moments and would love to discuss things freely without restraints...even though that leaves the door open for angry trolls ha

    Agreed.

To the OP, Firor didn't exactly say that ESO is an RPG, unless there were other quotes someplace that I missed:

"I don’t really consider ESO to be an MMO, in the traditional “MMORPG” sense of the word, because that term is freighted with a lot of definitions that don’t apply to ESO (tab targeting, mouse movement, PC-only, super hardcore, etc.). At this point, so many game types have underlying “massively multiplayer” technology that MMO is becoming even more dated as a term. I’ve long been a fan of online games – I’ve been in the game industry since the late 1980s and I’ve never shipped a single-player game – all of them have been multiplayer. As such, I love all types of online gaming interaction: Fifa, World of Warcraft, the last-man-standing shooters, etc. My first big MMORPG as a gamer was Everquest, although I dabbled a bit in Ultima Online before that. "

"We all play the other Elder Scrolls games, of course – and all the games from BGS. They are all influential, and I personally learn something from each one of them. We are an RPG studio at heart, and most of us play almost every RPG when it comes out. Also at this point, with so many stories in ESO, we use stories we have told already in a previous part of the game, and expand on it in a new one. So you can see characters you love from your early journeys in Tamriel show up more than a few times – we like doing this because we love the characters too, and it adds great depth to the game to have a famous NPC recognize you as someone they already know."

ESO is an online roleplaying game. And its an MMO.

    Hence the term MMORPG.

So many people want to argue about anything nowadays. Best thing to do is kill them with kindness and separate from that server. Personally, I don't have time to argue about stupid little things like that as we all have IRL matters that are more important...well at least most of us do.

Also, I'm still a firm believer that we have a great community of folks but the bad ones just stick out more.

tbh I don't even know what the damn difference is. To me, it's an MMO, but I call any multiplayer game that which allows lots of people to connect into the same persistent online world. It's also a Role Playing Game.
In any case, getting butthurt over the terminology is just silly and you're better off just not conversing with those people.

Take a look at the world around you. Everywhere there are people who just have a need to be angry at something...and they take that anger with them wherever they go. Better to focus on what makes you happy than what makes a stranger angry.

    it's a mystery to me

every time I read, "I have invested a lot in this game"

What the hell are you talking about? it's a video game, a hobby, it's not wallstreet, you don't invest anything, you waste time and money, that's the idea.

Disagree.. you invest your time, and to some extent yourself into a game.. you also invest money in it.. it's only a waste if you don't like what you get, and then you should consider quitting

different ways of looking at, respectable.

For me a video game is just a hobby, I waste time and money, I can't see it as an investment, someday ESO will disappear and everything will be erased, it is not an investment for me.

That does not mean that I do not enjoy the game , I like ESO, I think that without ESO I would have gone crazy in the pandemic locked up at home. Still, I respect your point of view.

I think it's a very mixed community in experience/play styles and demands.
I'd bet that those complaining about ESO turning into a a more casualized RPG are those players who have spent over 5 years in the ESO environment and have seen a bit of everything and have seen some aspects of the game change to something a little more 'dull' (I can vouch for this - 7 years ongoing).

Then you have those that negate anything you say, because they feel you are stepping on 'their' vision of the game. It's mostly just about preferences and I suppose one shouldn't get too aggravated by it. What you should get a little 'angry' about is the crummy performance/fixes...not the fact that its' an online MMORPG...let's find something in common!

Oh and yes. If I pay for something I want it to work...hence the term 'investment'...of course we aren't getting finances in return and no it's not wall street (strange comparison), but at the end of the day a service is a service and you go elsewhere when it isn't satisfactory, but in an MMO+RPG environment it is hard to do so because of all the time you have 'invested' and knowing you'll have to do the same elsewhere.

(says this, but the same rule applies above - if you haven't experienced it or deal with it on a daily basis it doesn't bother you and this is why I find it always important to introduce yourself as player and what you do in game)

also a 7 year player here, who loves MMORPGs more than any other game genre, whats happening to ESO is just the normal cycle of any mmo that has ever existed. like this is literally normal advancement for a game like this.

You know, this one time, at band camp, I made this delicious lasagna. I was about to sit down and eat when a someone came and said “Wow, that looks like a tasty casserole!” Funnily enough, their comment changed neither the taste nor how satisfied I felt after eating a piece. Odd huh?

A look around this forum will tell you much about the community. I have had friends that I have invited to play during free trials. Each one has said thanks but no thanks after reading through some threads and comments here. Makes me wonder how many other potential members have been scared off

I know quite a few, myself. They cited both the community and how moderation handles the community. One conversation went, "If that's how they handle their forums, that doesn't exactly give me hope that if something happens in game that issues will be resolved."

And you know what? I didn't argue with that.

Anger is the most addictive of all emotions, because it specifically makes you feel powerful.

And so you can fall into the trap of wanting to be angry all the time so you can feel powerful all the time.

The internet has anonymity, and so people feel more free to let loose their true feelings on a particular subject....and sometimes get addicted to anger in the process.
