Champion Bar - How does it work?

There are three categories for champion points: craft, warfare, and fitness. The champion bar shows four slots for each category, so I assume you can slot up to four options. Under the craft category, I have points in more than one option but the champion bar only lists one to choose from. Under warfare, I again have points in more than one option. Here however the champion bar gives me three options to choose from but only lets me slot two of them. Under fitness, the champion bar gives my two options to choose from but only lets me slot one option. I can't figure out any logic behind how this works. Any advise on making this work correctly would be appreciated. Thank you.

✭✭Any node that is gold is a passive, and won't let you slot it. It's just active all of the time.
Slottable nodes will actually say at the bottom that they need to be slotted. They should just be the color of the tree that you in.
The purple nodes are basically drop down menus, with more nodes revealed when you click on them.
Once you put in enough points in a slottable to unlock a tier, it will let you actually add it to your slottable's bar. You then have to confirm your selections so that it doesn't reset your choices.1
